10 out of 10 Don't let the smooth art style and vibrant atmosphere fool you. Yes many reviews call this game "cute" and "fun" but they haven't played on veteran difficulty with all of hostility modifiers activated. Oh? You think you have good resource management? You think you're a hardcore gamer? Good micro AND macro skills? Download this game. Unlock veteran difficulty and then max hostility. Develop any strategy you want (there are many) for avoiding starvation, sickness and death for your people while struggling to keep that damn dinosaur alive. All for the slight possibility that you can reach a sustainable state of resource production - one of the most satisfying feelings out there, period. The entire game is a balancing act. Focus too much on one area, and another will inevitably suffer. Fail to plan ahead, and you're dead before you know it. At the hardest possible difficulty you MUST get creative and gamble on the resources you have and the ones you hope to come across. While this game frustrates the hell out of me, I keep coming back because each time I lose, it's my own fault. I can always see something I could have done better. Sure, there are some random elements to the game that feel out of your control, but that's life brother. There are so many factors you have to constantly keep an eye on and when you successfully prepare for those unknowns and get past them, it is extremely rewarding. So come on you weenie, play the game at it's most challenging level and come back and tell me I'm wrong, I'll wait.

I really enjoy this game, but you need to know what you're getting. The Wandering Village was built by a team that approached it from the beginning with a focus on the aesthetics. To that end, it's gorgeous with a studio-Ghibli-like visual style and lovely, if repetitive, music. The overall effect is calming and meditative, evoking wonder. You're helping a ragtag band of survivors build a happy little village at the end of the world. This was the first builder game this team had made, and the strategy mechanics were an afterthought. Whereas a game like Frostpunk is incredibly well thought out and tight in terms of balancing priorities while existing just on the edge of survival, The Wandering Village team only hired someone with experience in builder game mechanics after its released. The game can be incredibly forgiving when starting out, but at harder difficulties players may find themselves several hours into a playthrough facing an unavoidable crisis because they neglected a tech branch for too long. The game continues to improve and enrich with every release, but I feel like the issues with the strategy mechanics will be difficult to overcome. Although this may look like a tough, strategy-first game, players coming for that experience will probably be disappointed. However, if you're looking for a game with a chill vibe that still feels rewarding as you guide your villagers past dangers and watch the village grow, this is a great buy.

I held off on this one because I didn't like that the buildings were 2d. They actually look a lot better in-engine. They made a twist on the regular village simulator by having you care for this dinosaur that transports you though different biomes requiring you to adapt on the fly. The greatest short coming this one has is that once you have researched all the tools for the different biomes the game play sort of flattens out. There are some risk-reward mechanics involving being a parasite to the dinosaur that you are on but the specializations you can perform are a little lackluster in options and depth. All in all a visually interesting game with a very unique gimmick that will last you a few evenings.

This game is decent. I like it, but it has a huge flaw. The main problem is that it lacks content. I held off on buying it for a while because I thought that it might be a bit overpriced for what I was getting. I was definitely not wrong and regret purchasing it for the price that I did. Paid around $20 for it. Should be worth maybe $10 for the amount of content it has. It is in "early access", but I'm not sure what that even means anymore. I'll probably come back to it from time to time to see if anything new is added. Hopefully they add more to keep it entertaining in the future.

This is an amazingly unique city-building game! As a life-long fan of city-building games (going back to Caesar I and II as a young child, and the Egyptian version, Pharaoh), I have to say this is among the best I've ever played (my favorites including Aven Colony and Pharaoh). But it's also completely unlike the others I've played because the entire nature of a city-builder has been turned on its head! Let me explain: In every other city-builder, you're trying to create stability: you're trying to ensure that you always have a pretty close match between employees and jobs, most notably. You want people you arrive and stay employed, be happy, and generate tax income. But Wandering Village has no taxes and no money. You're a village on the back of a moving creature, and you literally all need to stick together, so money and taxes wouldn't even make a lot of sense. The challenge isn't about building up an economy with exports or taxes, or even about keeping order or chasing fires like many city builders. Instead of all that, it's about dealing with a constantly changing climate as your city literally moves, including moving through biomes with contaminated air which can poison your people and your Onbu (the big guy your city is built upon). Instead of trying to find everyone permanent employment, this game involves moving around the villagers that you have as needed. Poison spores in the air? Maybe it's time to convert some of those builders and harvesters to doctors. Moving through the ocean? Okay, now we need to get some people on fishing. Moving through the dessert? Let's convert some farms to cactus-growing for our water supply! Instead of building a city that gets ever-larger (and often falls apart as city-builders have notoriously fragile balances which can spin out of control rapidly), you instead have a city that is ever-adaptable. Instead of building more and more and more farms, you work on upgrading just a few and managing them well. And, of course, to make things really interesting, you also have to feed, heal, and even pet your Onbu to build up a good relationship. He even graciously allows you to collect his poop to fertilize your fields (which you'll really want to do to make your few farms as efficient as possible). The game is visually beautiful and has a good balance between restful and stressful. Overall, this is a five-star game and I'm so glad they're continuing to work on it. This latest release made a great game even better and I'm looking forward to more. The team is responsive in Discord, as well as the player base, so you can share your experience and ask for help along the way. Get this game right now. Enjoy. Thank me later.
