At a basic level, it feels very similar to the earlier entries (ToM 1 to 3). It's still a match-3 game and still uses gems and totems. Happily, that's where the similarities end. A great deal of work obviously went into new content crafting, so Treasures of Montezuma 4 is definitely worth playing in its own right, even if you found ToM 3 a bit repetitive. The first big difference is you will see plenty of new game modes offered: story mode, similar to before but with 3D cutscenes and more of an actual story element added. Nothing too exciting but at least it's there if you're interested and skippable if not (though it's short enough that you'd have to be pretty impatient to want to skip it). Puzzle mode offers many different options and adds a lot of replay value, as well as a gallery of collectibles for completing each mode. Quest mode is locked until you complete the story mode, so I can't comment on that part of the experience yet, other than to say it would be nice to have some idea of what it entails. If it's anything like the other modes then it would only add even more replay value. I also like that you're given more time than just one minute. My main complaint about ToM 3 is that each level is never any longer than a minute. I suppose it provides a nice consistency and short time for playing during a 5 minute break, but it often felt frustrating always coming down to those last few seconds and hearing the goofy boing-boing warning. With more time on the clock it feels more enjoyable and lets you go at your own pace. So you may prefer one experience over the other (timed vs relaxed). Perhaps some of the puzzle modes I have yet to unlock provide a more dedicated timed experience like ToM 3. Now for the bad stuff. There is a 1.5 second zapping-and-shaking animation when each match is made. Two seconds may not sound like a lot, but through the entire level, every level, it gets old quickly and makes the UI and responsiveness feel more sluggish and clumsy compared to ToM 3. The UI itself seems to have taken a backseat in quality even compared to ToM 3, and especially considering the otherwise nice 3D graphics and cutscenes. Even the sound effects feel a bit delayed. The level also ends abruptly once the main goal is met, which is confusing at first because it doesn't show you this in a big way, leaving you attempting to make more matches and wondering why the game is suddenly not responding. I learned rather to look at the clock to see if it's still counting down, and if it isn't, the level is over and you won't be able to try to make any more matches. The unlockable power ups and upgrade system is a bit more confusing than before because now there are two currencies: stars, and coins/gold. It's also unclear why both are needed, and particularly hazy how and why you receive each new star. My first thought was to spend the star on new powerups and then the gold on upgrades for those powerups you already unlocked (using the stars) but apparently that's not how it works. I couldn't explain how it works because as I said it's quite confusing. Saving up coins doesn't feel useful in giving the player the power of choice, it feels superfluous and unnecessary. Kind of a step down from ToM 3 in overall quality, but it does offer immense replay value. If you can put up with the UI and feel of this entry then it will definitely keep you more satisfied with plenty more to do in a way the previous ones don't. I am hoping ToM 5 comes in with the best of both worlds, the snappy and crisp matching UI from ToM 3 with the added replay value of number four.

Can't say it's a particularly good game, but it did fill the time while waiting on hold with the cable company.

Re-Review: I gave the game another chance. It's not so bad once I figured out how to get more gold for upgrades. I still think the timer system stinks.
