A pretty decent match 3 game that I remembered playing on Ipad way back. Nice nostalgia trip to pick up on sale. Hearing "Score Frenzy" still triggers the same dopamine it used to. However, the game does have a significant memory leak issue that causes it to reliably crash after 40 mins, so set a timer and quit to main menu to save often. Audio will also occasionally glitch. Graphics are still good, still feels as nice as it did to play on tablet. solid 4/5.

I am not generally a fan of match-3 games. They seldom have enough depth or replay value to keep me coming back for more. The Treasures of Montezuma series is a rare exception. The totems idea is fun and gives the different colored blocks a lot more meaning, which is unique to these games. I played through ToM 1 and 2 many years ago when I first found out about Alawar Games and thoroughly enjoyed them, and they seem to have improved since then. I eagerly anticipate playing through ToM 4 and 5 also to see what they have to offer. Treasures of Montezuma's unique 'mechanic' as a match-3 puzzle is that some of the matching blocks can contain gems, and it's gathering these gems which ups your score multiplier and makes the game a lot more fun than other average match-3 games (of which there are thousands). Totems and upgrades are a bit more standard but still interesting and the upgrade system itself is definitely fun. This particular entry has fantastic graphics and well made music, but it's a match-3 game so you shouldn't expect much more than that. (Many other matching games fail in both graphics and music). If you're on the fence about match-3 games, try this one out and it might just change your mind.
