while almost scared away by its challenging puzzles, this game presented an intelligent story, emotional drama, and expansive world-building that drew me right back in. the base game is incredible. however, the dlc lacks the same emotional core and story density, mainly serving as prequel exposition. ultimately, left me craving more. also, achievement hunting was fun and not mind-shattering.

What a beautiful, gently haunting game. I'll admit I have a bit of a soft spot for Eastern Asian inspired horror, there is just something about it, that makes the stories stick with me longer. Maybe because usually they are tied closely to some form of mysticism and complex beliefs, or maybe because of the fascinating aesthetics. No idea, all I know is that this "something" means I was interested in The Rewinder since I saw it. Looks great, I thought. And you know what? It is great. It's not the scariest, there isn't any hiding from monsters, maybe two sequences of running away from one. The pixel art doesn't allow for much in the terms of horrifying design. There is no jumpscares. But at the same time there is something deeply haunting and eerie about the whole story. The twists were unexpected, putting the extra time into doing 100% was rewarding, giving the story an extra closure, the tone was bittersweet and in so many moments just deeply sad. And it goes so well with the theme of evil spirits being bound to the living world by despair, sadness and resentment. The characters were genuinely likeable, so it's not hard to get invested in their story and to get attached to them. They're all imperfect, all have their flaws, but there's something very human about the writing of both the main duo and the villagers. With every chapter, when the player rewinds another moment of history, they learn more about them, it's like peeling layers of paper to discover the whole picture. And what I loved most, was that there isn't a single unimportant element in this story. Every character, every memory, every trivia is somehow connected to another. It's a beautiful game and I recommend it wholeheartedly. PS: Collect all the flowers, you'll have to use a repeat chapter feature from the end of the game for it, but it's really worth the effort.

Beautiful art and story. I love Chinese mythology and this game uses it very well. The rewind mechanic is good, but I wish we could skip the cutscenes completely when we restart. I highly recommend it if you love puzzle.

A very well made game with very interesting rewind mechanics but the main focus on the game is the narrative and they made it very good as well, I can't wait for the next game from this awesome developer!
