This is a lovely little game about leaving your old life in the city to start a new life in the Alaskan wilderness. You are traveling to your new home with 5 sled dogs. This is a survival game built around making choices that determine if you will survive and reach your destination. You are also unlocking the stories of each dog (you travel with 5 at a time but there are more dogs to choose from). This game has rogue-lite elements where you learn from each failed or successful run so that next time, you start with more resources which aid in your survival. The game is visually gorgeous, the main character is voiced by the talented Ashley Burch, and the dogs are adorable and you can pet them as much as you want to. There is some replayability with regard to unlocking all of the dogs' stories, finding the best items and completing the journal by making different choices but it's still a fairly short game even with all of that. I really enjoyed my time with it. Recommended for people who like survival-lite, rouge-lite and/or choice-based adventure games.

If you enjoy this game, read Winterdance by Gary Paulsen! Yes, the dude who wrote Hatchet also became dog-sled racer. Plays well on Steam Deck and is mellow and gets easier as you play. In the beginning, the randomness is annoying in foiling your runs.

Red Lantern is one of those few games I encounter in life that feels hand designed for me, from the plot down to the atmosphere. Dog sledding across Alaska was always a childhood dream of mine, so when I realized the protagonist was trying to realize that dream in reconciliation of adulthood hardships it could not help but move me. Obviously this make for a deep bias towards the game, but I still think it makes for a nice experience for others. It is a bit buggy since the last update, and some things do not work as well since the original design was an infinite loop (not being able to pet Fin or do the story of any but the lead dog's in training runs for example), but if you are here for a light strategy rogue lite romp through the ice it will suit you.

I got Red Lantern after watching a couple videos of people playing through the game, and as I had initially expected, I really enjoyed it! The graphics and atmosphere of the game are absolutely breathtaking, and I love all the dogs and while the voice-over is constant, it adds so much content that players like myself, can really relate too. The dogs and their stories are all very unique and engaging, and while most of their stories can be easily completed within one run, they certainly kept me hooked. On a bit of a different note, one thing I had to point out for it's excellence is the way the game handles failure. Sometimes, you hit a few too many bears or starve, and you die on your run. Instead of throwing that run to waste, the game sets it up as a nightmare which further prepares you for your next attempt. I think that makes the game so much less frustrating, and improves the flow of the storyline so well. I totally recommend this game to anybody who loves dogs and a bit of a challenge. P.S. The soundtrack is top-tier.
