hits home like awfully close, good story, great puzzles and symbolism, VA is lol and controls are a bit sluggish, you're stuck in long animations at times

it's been about five years since i first played this game- i got it on sale on steam recently to play it again, and i find myself still in the same tears and awe this game left me in all that time ago, as well as feeling familiar swirling emotions as the credits rolled. this was a game needed in the world when it first came out, this was a game i wish we could've been able to see shine even sooner than that, and this *is* a game that still remains strong with a timeless narrative many will always need to hear and see, even if they don't know they need it yet. if you're down for a unique puzzle-platformer in every sense- gameplay, narrative, visuals, music, characters, so on- and are open to navigating a island with trippy and unsettling aesthetics all around through a brutal yet... helpful death/regeneration mechanic censored with a stark black and white silhouette- and listening to a story that resonates with so many people and their own realities- this is a game worth sitting down and devoting a few days to a week to complete. my only heads up is that your controls for this game can be awkward/clumsy at times, due to the nature of how the gameplay works in it- getting through the game is 100% doable, but you may run into a few challenges depending on the chapter and method of death in which you need to solve a puzzle or move onto the next checkpoint. if you realize this isn't for you gameplay wise, i highly recommend finding another way to experience the story for yourself anyway.

The MISSING is a lovely and interesting story that was greatly hindered by gameplay, especially towards the end. It left me so frustrated and I feel the gameplay section of the finale could have been handled a lot better, as it greatly soured my overall enjoyment and left me struggling through, until I could finally see the credits roll. However, I am still going to say, it is a game one should experience for themself. It is VERY in your face with the story it is trying to tell, so I don't understand how so many people miss the mark by such a large margin. Yes, the collectibles give you more tidbits, but even without getting a 100% the game still shows you EXACTLY who J.J. is, and I loved every second of it. The voice acting was interesting, if a little lacking (once again towards the end), but it blessed me with such a fascinating new vocal stim of "Major hemorrhage"so, thank you based doctor. This game was made with the belief that nobody is wrong for being what they are.

I saw a Jesse Cox's playthrough years ago, when I was still newly figuring out my own identity. At the time, I didn't realize it was a trans story until fairly late. Now, finally playing it after my own transition, it feels so obvious and so much more relatable. And being relatable, it hurts so much more to play through certain parts of it. The trigger warning at the start of the game should absolutely be taken seriously, but if you can handle it I hope it gives some perspective for the struggles transgender people go through. And if you are questioning your own identity, maybe it will resonate with you too. <3

+ unique visuals + deep cryptic and fragmented story + pretty complicated (as the game itself) + weird puzzle mechanics (da feels..ouch) + visual appealing + information to get into + very thoughtfull made + had trouble processing the whole game + confusing but good - some bugs where i had to restart things - some controls were annoying and not accurate Conclusion: To spare you from making spoilers.
