A puzzle-solving horror-mystery game which draws elements from sources like Quantic Dream games or maybe that Observer game with Rutger Hauer. Make your way through a spoopy Polish resort which was the scene of a massacre as a recently bereaved leather-jacket toting, grandpa-speed jogging Medium. Your protagonist has the ability to see/interact with both the real world and the spirit world - the latter being a fleshy/ashy/gross reflection of the real world - this ability and divide being the source of the game's story/puzzles/conflict etc. Pretty innovative. Gameplay-wise, the game ranged from frustrating to intuitive with the latter being most prevalent. Puzzle-solving was mainly straightforward, Resident Evil tier difficulty. A few larger puzzles which took place over bigger areas, such as the water-pump puzzle and the puzzles with the masks were more intricate, but not frustrating and still intuitive. I found the stealth sections to not be too drawn out or frustrating - I'm not a fan of sneaking slowly in games that are not stealth dedicated games, but I guess you have to expect that in horror games nowadays. I guess if you ARE looking for challenging horror-stealth gameplay, you may be disappointed. The chase sequences in the game were frequently a let down, with retro fixed-camera angles sometimes being a source of confusion and death. Several chase sequences killed me repeatedly with me not being super-clear what I was doing wrong and that sucked the tension right out. To the game's credit, the puzzley parts stayed well separated from the other parts, giving you time to think and explore. The game's atmosphere was great. Dripping in dread and decay. I found that very enjoyable. The heck-world was a little un-spooky though for me - I found the real-world scenes to be more impactful for me personally - ymmv. I did appreciate the creepy flesh doors, tentacles and fleshy appendages which writhed their way around the various environments. This was super cool. The little notes, letters, objects, ghostly-sounds to listen to, and ghostly scenes to see really added to the story and atmosphere. Some of the scenes where there were monsters, it was too clear when the monster could and couldn't actually kill you, and it felt a little video-gamey - which took me out of it a bit. There were also a few sections where my dude is running around and I know I have to collect this thing to stick in the other thing to make the thing-thing, but I'm not sure why I need to do that aside to progress with the game. I think that's reasonable puzzle-design, but not particularly immersive - reminds me of when you pick up the rope and the shovel and the bird-seed in Monkey Island just because. The graphics and sound design in the game were very good. I appreciated the atmosphere provided by both environmental sounds and music. Particularly some of the low droney oboe bits towards the end of the game - nice stuff - reminded me a little of Hereditary. The main protagonist and the main antagonist's voices were both very well done. The writing for the monster particularly was very close to cheesy in a few places and I think that the delivery really saved it - that and the naturalistic performance of the main character's voice actress. The game is also very graphically pretty - well I mean the graphics are good and the tentacles and gross stuff looks gross and tentacly. From the lighting to the textures of even upclose items - everything was polished and effective. Hey, I dig this one. A good 5 or 6 hour experience. I wouldn't say it was very re-playable - maybe some of the mysterious elements presented in the first-half of the game would be elucidated by the second, but I think the tension would be gone.

The Medium is truly a mixed bag -- an experience of highs & lows. It has some innovative ideas, like the dual reality system, & an interesting narrative. And, the studio is punching well above their weight in terms of graphical fidelity. However, the game is bogged down by persistent performance issues, big quality jumps between chapters, & middling gameplay. The game is more or less akin to a walking simulator w/ some light puzzling. It is reminiscent of Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice. Overall, I would recommend the game on a sale if you can stomach the walking simulator adjacent gameplay. More I liked than disliked here but definitely mixed as a whole.

From the first minutes I was fascinated. The "dual world" mode is really well done and the soundtrack is spot on. Only one thing I'm not appreciating, the "fixed" camera. It was certainly a deliberate choice so as not to lose certain scenes within the game, but at certain moments I would have liked to have a better look at the surrounding landscape. It would be nice if a photo mode was integrated into the game. My rating 8/10

A very good atmospheric slow burn mystery story-driven horror game. How's that for a review title? Throughout the 10-20ish hours of gameplay it takes to finish The Medium, you'll undergo plot twists, discoveries, and spooky scaries as the mystery slowly reveals itself. Getting to each new juicy detail was a delight and the game, while definitely horror, lives in the atmospheric genre. There are scares, but nothing cheesy or "jump scary." No, The Medium much prefers to reveal it's horrors to you directly. My only qualm with the game is the ending, which I won't spoil here. It left me dissatisfied, but I enjoyed every moment leading up to it, so I have to recommend it. Play: You love psychological horror, Stranger Things vibes, and extremely strong storytelling. Skip: You aren't fulfilled by story-driven experiences and cutscenes, don't like easy-medium (lol) puzzles, or don't love spooky vibes. (I promise the game is creepy, but only gets SCARY a few times, which are EARNED)

Best description I can give: imagine if "What Remains of Edith Finch" were set in a Zdzisław Beksiński painting. This "game" is thoughtfully made, story-driven, and incredibly atmospheric, but I put "game" in quotes because you're on rails the whole time: there's about four abilities (other than walking/running), all of which are useful/usable only at specific plot points that are explicitly announced via onscreen prompts. There's an inventory, some puzzles, and a few stealth/chase segments, but all they ask of the player is to follow directions rather than exercise any independent skill or strategy. I don't think those are flaws, though, because the game feels cohesive and complete instead of unfinished or broken; it's more like the devs had a very specific vision, and your mileage as a player will vary depending on how much that vision appeals to you. If you're looking for survival horror like Dead Space, Resident Evil, or Amnesia, you'll be disappointed. But if you're looking for a rules-light, atmosphere-intensive stroll through a visually and emotionally interesting story, this is worth picking up.
