Really fun game. The combat in levels become a bit repetitive at the very end, but still fun and the boss battles make up for it as they are really creative.

Got it on a sale, The Legend of Tianding is a short and fun game with a story narrative on Taiwan history during the Japanese occupation period. Its a Metroidvania game that is similar to Hollow Knight, but a lot easier. It doable to perfect this game in one single play through; -Play on outlaw mode, its more challenging though, and you have to redo the boss many times to learn their moves -Give money to beggars until they don't need it anymore -Upgrade the weapon from blacksmith and bun from chef until max -Search youtube video on where all the treasure box is located across the 4 map -Use triple jump to go on top of all buildings for hidden collectibles -On the train map, there is a bird which you need to rope off to the second bird for hidden collectibles -Use rope on all enemy types until you get their corresponding talisman, they will have a blinking light on them until you found the talisman -Use rope on all boss until they drop the items -There will be 2 instance (Li-Hong asking the farmers where the money comes from, and A-Guai to be sold away), and you will given the option to beat or trick, select beat and then reenter the location to choose trick on the second time -Defeat the final boss after all collectibles and talisman

RECOMMEND. Especially on SALE. The Legend of Tianding is a neat 2d action platformer that combines with beat-them-up. 3d model is a bit ugly on close but suits game need. 2d art is decent. It's combination of Japanese Manga and Hong Kong Comics style. This also fits culture (Taiwan regime was changing rapidly) Platforming is more leaning to action than puzzle. It can be hard if you want to collect all treasures but mostly part is simple. Combat is fun, you can use you knife, special arts, or weapons from foes like police baton, blade, guns and even RPG. Boss fights are unique and challenging. No cheap moves. Story is simple but well presented. In short, this game is good enough you want it goes on longer, but it ends right before sweet spot. Something should be improve (like, too many collectibles from beggars) But this is indeed fun game to get.

Overall a very good Game. The Legend of Tianding is a 2D-Side Scrolling-Jump'n'Run Action Brawler. It is quite short but in a good way, it doesn't overstay it's welcome. Actually thinking about it, this really was the perfect time for this Game (slightly over 9 hours with doing all the Side Quests). Let's go quickly through the motions. Graphics: The Game is Hand Drawn and presented in a Comic/Manga Style. The visuals are crisp and a Game like this will hold up for centuries without anyone saying that this is unplayable because it does not look good. Voice Acting: I don't understand Taiwanese but what you can expect is typically "eastern" over the Top Voice Acting like in those Anime Series. Sound: No complaints here. Music: Some good tracks in here, I didn't dislike it. Gameplay: It's good fun if you like a brawler and it also has teeny tini (!!) hints of Metroidvania Movement. The Controls are good, jumping around and fighting is fun as well, especially when you get more abilities. Secrets are easy to find but still rewarding, there is a ton of items you can get. The Bosses are a little highlight, I think it's about 6 bosses but they are all very well designed and fun. Especially the last one which was the only challenging one, but when you got his moveset down, it is just a fun time. Story: It's the Legend of Tian-Ding... Didn't care too much. I had a few very small gripes with the Game. 1. Some Achievements need you to grind some levels over and over. Not so great. 2. The translation was not always on point, sometimes I even had French translation shown up directly after the English one. And no, this was not intended. 3. There was one quest in particular which seemed buggy, in the End I still finished it somehow but this problem seemed to persist for many players. Apart from a few minor annoyances, I can wholeheartedly recommend this Game, if you like a short but sweet brawler...

Movies about a Chinese hero, who represents of the resilient spirit of the people and triumphs over its colonial oppressors, are very popular among Chinese audience. The enduring popularity of movies like Bruce Leeā€™s Fist of Fury, Jet Liā€™s Once Upon a Time in China and Fearless, and Donnie Yenā€™s Ip Man ā€“ to name a few ā€“ shows the appeal of the genre. It doesnā€™t matter if the hero is real or fictional, or that the story is exaggerated, if not completely made up. Itā€™s all about rousing the audienceā€™s cultural pride. By chance, I came across The Legend of Tianding, an action platformer of this genre. I actually didnā€™t know who Liao Tianding was prior to playing this game. What caught my attention was the gameā€™s art style, which reminded me of Chinese manhua of the 1970s and 1980s, like Tony Wongā€™s Oriental Heroes (a.k.a. Dragon Tiger Gate) and Ma Wing-Shingā€™s Chinese Hero: Tales of the Blood Sword (a.k.a. A Man Called Hero). https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3156568624 The Legend of Tianding ā€“ subtitled The End of the Unrivaled Thief in Chinese ā€“ is a game about the embellished last days of the Taiwanese folk hero. Tianding was a thief during the Japanese colonial period in Taiwan. His criminal exploits had been mythologized to be Robin-Hood-esque and driven by fighting colonial injustice. Today, he is still seen as a hero who stood up to Japanese oppressors, and is said to be a skilled martial artist who thwarted colonial authorities. What a great subject for a video game! This action platformer also has light adventure and Metroidvania elements. With newly unlocked abilities, you can explore previously inaccessible areas to find collectibles and complete side quests. But, itā€™s the combat that is the gameplay centerpiece. Best played using a controller, the game has brisk and impactful martial arts action. The gameā€™s manhua-style action and cutscenes, and the beautifully rendered 2.5D graphics bring this comic book tale of Liao Tianding to life. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3156568662 A few special actions could be a bit tricky to pull off at first, but the game is forgiving and provides plenty opportunity for honing those skills. The game also allows you to change difficulty level mid-game should want a bit moreā€¦or less challenge; so even gamers like I, who like just a bit of a challenge, can finish the game without getting overly frustrated. Still, this doesnā€™t mean the final boss battle is a walk in the park. One type of collectibles that you can find or earn in the game are amulets. Amulets can be equipped to give a slight boost in your combat or adventuring stats. The other type are common items of the era, such as everyday objects, food, and artwork. The developers added captions to each collectible entry to provide some information about life during Japanese occupation in Taiwan. It was a nice touch of authenticity to include historically important buildings, designs, and items of the period in the game. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3156568643 The gameā€™s telling of Tiandingā€™s final days may be a mix of truth and fiction, but it was effective in getting players to live vicariously through the hero in fighting colonial oppression. While this game didnā€™t break new grounds in game design, the well-balanced, tried and true gameplay elements worked well to deliver a pleasant, exciting action platformer experience. I hope The Legend of Tianding will inspire Chinese developers to make more games of this genre to spur people on to learn more about Chinese history, folktales and mythology.
