This is a charming XCOM style game, with a 1930s pulp style to it quite different from most turn based tactical games. If you enjoyed XCOM 2, XCOM:Chimera Squadron, Phoenix Point, or Mutant: Year Zero, check this game out. It's not flawless, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I don't understand why this game sold so poorly. The mix of real-time exploration, timing-based real-time and turn-based mode is brilliant. The fresh setting, good AI of the opponents, nice story, motivating development of the likeable group, The Lamplighters League offers so much good gameplay, is nice to look at, very nice fitting music and a lot more. But above all, the developers' desire and passion is evident. It is very well thought out, has great balancing and lots of lovely details. I really like this game and it makes me think a little that it was definitely not a financial success. I know a lot of games that actually offer much less, were developed without passion according to a formula, but that sold much better. It's puzzling how this market works. If I were to criticize something, it would be the fixed camera perspective and the lack of a quick save. I really can't think of anything else. A clear recommendation for anyone looking for a compact, turn-based adventure!

By the time I played the game - the bugs were by and large gone, presumably fixed in the last patch prior to the devs leaving Paradox, so if you're going into this now - you can expect a reasonably smooth playthrough. And it is a decent, solid, turn based game. Good combination of stealth options as well as fun battles when you do have to engage. Varied Equipment and skillset combinations. One of its main issues, however, is that the game has 12 characters, with seemingly varied skillsets, but in practice the game forces you to pick a main team of 3-4 and run with them the entire game, else you will fall behind. And its not just a matter of skill points. Because you can't give cards to agents that don't go on a mission, part of the overall equipment sent is restricted only to those you are actively using to fight. So you can completely max out your new agent's skills, but because they never got any cards, they're too far behind to ever be useful. This forces you to replay if you ever want to use the other agents. And while the game is decent, its not *that* good to really be worth the replay.

Honestly, this game deserves better than a "Mixed" review. I put off buying this game for quite a while because of the dreaded "Paradox" publisher ickyness. I tend to walk away from most Paradox games feeling used and dirty. This game actually lets you bypass the dreaded launcher, so points there... My personal experience with the game seems very counter to many of the reviews here. I have played 20+ hours so far and have very much enjoyed the game. I have had zero problems with bugs or janky behavior, the game has run without a hitch. I suspect many people are mis-clicking enemies on the stealth takedown mechanic and getting frustrated. One major way to avoid this is to use the keyboard shortcut when close to them and just hit spacebar to perform a takedown. Using tab to cycle through your agents is much easier than trying to click them on screen. A really nice thing about the game is that it is extensively voice acted and the various characters are well acted, unique, and have personality. The various Agents on your team have unique skill trees and different powers from each other. This was much better than expected. The agents are MUCH more unique and fleshed out than say XCOM soldiers, they are closer to Baldur's Gate characters but not quite that fleshed out. You only take 3 per mission so mixing and matching leads to a great deal of unique tactical options. There are many abilities that provide for synergy between different characters. All characters pull from the same Skill Point pool so its much easier to create builds and there isn't a lot of gaming "who gets the kill" to get xp or background characters that can never get leveled up. Do some Agents seem better than others? Maybe, but its single player, does it matter? While characters can technically "Die" they mostly get debuffs for a few turns for getting knocked down or have to sit out a mission. Basically, overall the Agents are really well done. The theme and the story are quite well done, unique, engaging, and well written. Each turn see's the story play out in addition to whatever action your team is taking. It frequently seems well weaved into the bigger story's dialogue. I see a lot of complaints about the maps being the same. I personally have not noticed this. There are not a lot of different biomes but they are very applicable to the theme. Maybe I don't have a photographic memory but if they are reused it's not terribly obvious to me. There is a good variety of thematic enemies various Soldiers, Agents, Mummies, Other Worldly Creatures, etc. The animations are good and there is a good variety of special abilities and powers with nice special effects. The world map is more engaging than expected more in line again with XCOM with 3 different factions that you are fighting against. Each turn there is a selection of missions to choose from, you can't do them all every turn. If a faction is ignore too much its missions gets more challenging. If you let them go too long you lose the game. There is a decent variety of missions, not huge, but decent. There are story missions, enemies to fight, boss fights, agents to rescue, various resources to gather, etc. There are is a decent amount of base options to unlock and items to be crafted to improve your base and agents. So, a good bit of theory crafting takes place each turn. Overall, I think the game is quite good. It's not perfect everywhere but if you enjoy the theme and don't mind thinking about your agents actions each turn, looking for synergy's there is a lot of fun to be had and a decent amount of replayability in different team makeups. I personally would give it a 8/10, but I am partial to the theme/setting which probably bumps it up a point.

I just finished Lamplighter's League and I'm sad there won't be another. I didn't play the game right at launch. I heard it was pretty rough then. But I played through after the final patch dropped (when HBS split with Paradox or whatever), and I really enjoyed this game. I loved the setting, the characters... It felt like The Mummy meets X-com or something like that. There were still some things that annoyed me that I felt could have been improved on. There aren't that many maps for their random battles around the world, and the game could have either benefited from a lot more maps, or maybe some kind of procedural generation---after awhile the random map battles started feeling stale and I just wanted to get on with the campaign. The threat system has apparently been tweaked since launch, which is good. I played a custom game with 'easy' threat generation (but normal combat) and it felt challenging but not TOO challenging. Near the end of the game I'd recruited a roster of 10 agents and Marteau was a hair from victory. The characters are interesting and I wanted to learn more about them. I wish they'd had their own personal missions or something like that. But I enjoyed the conversations in the hideout and the banter between the agents was fun. I'm sad HBS split with Paradox which means we probably won't be seeing another Lamplighter's League---they left it wide open for a sequel. But I mean, I love HBS and their other games and I have to assume they're doing what's best for them. Maybe this means we'll get another Shadowrun game or something like that in the future. Or Crimson Skies, though I think Microsoft still own the rights to that. TLDR: A fun tactical turn based game that feels like The Mummy meets X-com.
