It took me about 2 months of playing off and on (around 11 hours) to 100% the game. Do I recommend it? Yes. Was it what was I expecting? Not really. Bullet hell metroidvania sounds incredibly promising, and while the game is good it tends towards frustration. I would perhaps blame that on mana for cards getting funneled into powerful weapon cards and there not being a lot of unlockable metroidvania features. Some people with a better brain than me might make interesting decks, I made one that allowed me to use the most powerful weapon card in the game as much as possible (and I probably didn't do that very well either.) That being said there's no long-term missables, the story/art/music are good, and it drew me in enough to want to actually 100% the game.

The first part of this review is going to be about the game, the second part is going to b**** about the quality of reviews, both steam and otherwise. You've been warned. Yes, I am using this review as my soapbox. Deal with it. First part: This game is great. In fact, it's fantastic. If you like Metroidvanias you will like this game. Frankly, I think it deserves to be mentioned with the same kind hallowed tone as Ori and Hollow Knight. I am not even really a fan of bullet hell games, but this one isn't unfair and that's my usually gripe about bullet hells. I found many of the bosses and ambushes to be quite challenging, but also extremely satisfying. The artwork and music are wonderful. If you are a connoisseur of game music, go add "Mirror Lake" to your Spotify playlist. The story also has its ups and downs, and while I am usually the first to predict how a story will go by the time the introduction is finished, this one had me guessing. Several characters go through story arcs that have important themes like the burden of celebrity and what it means to have a hero complex. There is even a sort of morality mechanic that will determine how quickly you can level up your skills and demonstrates the dangers of propaganda. Metroidvanias live or die by their exploration and skill mechanics and I think this game really shines in that arena. Because your character flies, and thereby can inherently access a lot of the screen real estate to begin with, there aren't as many skills to acquire throughout the game, but personally I think this prevents a lot of unnecessary backtracking. To keep it spicy there is a spell system, which adds just a little bit of deckbuilding. The spells in your deck are randomly selected and applied to three slots so certain bosses may require a little bit of frequency analysis-type thinking. I really love this aspect. I love that there is a little bit of chaos to contend with as you run out of mana whilst hoping the spell you need pops up soon. When your heavy hitting spell pops up and you have the mana to use it and you slam that boss with the final hit, it's very satisfying. This is a solidly executed game. Buy it. Second part: I generally like what Team 17 publishes. I love Metroidvanias. I followed and wishlisted this game before it was released. Why did it take me two years to finally follow through and buy it? The word "Mixed". Mixed reviews. It seems like small Indie studios have the worst luck when it comes to game reviews because everyone is so eager to be edgy about their opinion. But if you actually go through and read some of the "mixed" reviews, you'll find most of them actually say the game is excellent but they had gripes about either tiny polishing details or that certain spells didn't feel like they had enough oomph. But otherwise they are saying the game is great. A lot of these reviews even incorporate their own rating system, like "4/5" in their reviews but then select "not recommended". It's insanity. Yes, Steam binary yes/no review system is awful. In my opinion, the only reason you should say a game is not recommended is for bugs, bad development, or unforgiveably bad gameplay. If it's a well executed game but you just, personally didn't like the story, for the love of God just click the thumbs up and explain. I find this problem extends to critic reviews as well. The Metacritic score is unbearable low. One critic said it has "too many mechanics" and the only thing I can conclude from that is that this person is a moron. Some reviews said the game is "excellent" and then gave it a score of 70. Clearly these people got C-'s in high school and felt contritely that their work was actually excellent. So dear reader, don't be like me, Buy the games you are excited about and refund it under two hours if you see it going downhill right away. Don't be like me and miss out on a great game for two years because people are idiots.

PROS: [*] Awesome, gorgeous art style. [*] Good story with 2 endings. [*] Fun and interesting game play. [*] Some nice spike difficulty for bosses. [*] Tons of combat variations. [*] Cheats if you have problems with difficulty and they don't void achievements. [*] Challenges of no hits/fast cleaning for ambushes. [*] After a while you can fast travel between zones from shrines. [*] The sock guy helps you later to display missing collectibles on map. [*] Smooth controls. [*] Hidden "pages" with the whole plot of the game. CONS: [*] Some enemies can be bullets sponge/hard for some peoples, but with cheats they are piece of cake. [*] Back tracking. [*] The submarine level/fights are bad. [*] You unlock armors but you can't permanently equip it/weapons have short usage ( some are OP AF and if you use unlimited ammo cheats the game is a piece of cake so I get why they are this way). OVERALL: The game is fun, with a unique game play and "free cheats" if you struggle. Try it!

I almost didn't buy this game after reading some of the other reviews, but after 100%ing it, my conclusion is that many of those complaining didn't really read the label. It's a bullet hell metroidvania, a.k.a. shmuptroidvania, and if you don't like shmups, that part isn't going to be as satisfying as the platforming you might be more used to. I'm not a big shmup player, but still enjoyed it a lot. Certainly has some rough edges here and there, but makes it pretty high on my overall rankings. Great art, a wonderful story that's actually much better-developed than the myriad souls-like-with-environmental-storytelling games out there, performant on my relatively low-end machine, and engaging enough to sink 20 hours into. I did end up looking up a video for how to unlock the puppy, and late-game cleanup is a bit tedious in terms of movement, but the core mechanics are solid, and while the deckbuilding aspect isn't super strong, it's there enough that you can have very different playstyles and still make good decks, and there are combo mechanics to be had.

An enjoyable blend of the shoot-them-up and metroidvania genres. The game has a very solid gameplay core that offers a decent challenge, with really nice visuals. If you're a fan of both genres, I recommend playing the game and expect you'll get about a dozen hours of good fun. There are however a number of quality-of-life problems in the game that almost guarantee I will never go back to it. [*]Movement outside of combat is quite slow, with no ability to teleport between maps (let alone checkpoints). This turns completing side-objective into a chore, especially considering that the metroidvania aspect requires significant backtracking once new powers unlock areas... to the point of simply giving up. [*]The card system always felt awkward, and is built in such a way that you cannot build muscle memory around it. When you use a spell, it is replaced with another one from your deck, until you cycle through all of them. The real pain point is how it forces you to look away from your character mid-bullet hell and ends up costing you hearts. Can't help but feel the UI could have been designed better here. [*]Some mechanics weren't relevant in the whole game. Buying armour? Purifying beacons? Didn't know, didn't care. [*]Completionists beware: some achievements never triggered for me, so if that matters to you, there's a non-zero chance you won't be able to reach 100% The story also felt like a patchwork, except a much less successful one. It wants to be feminist, it wants to be ecologist, it wants to be a deconstruction of the superhero genre and more, as if the devs had attempted to cram 10 years of binging TV shows into a little indie-game shell. That would have required far superior writing skills than were displayed here. Not that the narrative matters too much in such a game, but I could have done without the cringe. Overall, everything that isn't about dodging and shooting bullets felt slightly janky at best... but was also secondary when it comes to the gaming experience. Because at least, the dodging and the shooting was really fun.
