It all began in '94... KOF is a series that passed me by the wayside. I am sure that it did for most people, too. Partially due to the fact that I was born way too late for this series to truly intrest me. However, one day, young child me decided that he would get into fighting games. And I sucked at it. But that wasn't the important thing, I loved the few fighting games I played, to the point that I tried to play all the ones I could... Yet I was kinda intimidated by KOF. I had heard of the intimidating difficulty of KOF, and I was terrified of how these games would turn my colon inside out. But one day I decided to watch the series by Thorgi's Arcade about these games... And the stories of the games, the gameplay, the story of the company, and the overall bittersweet ending, made me interested in KOF. So, of course, I started with this one... And it was great. I am not good at these games, in fact, I am quite terrible. However, the sprites were great, the animations were great, the character designs were great, the AI was... okay, the gameplay felt amazing, and above all else, I just felt smitten by how it all played. So yes, this game is wonderful. And I am terrible at it. But that doesn't matter, because even to me, it just feels so sweet.

For those who grew up in the 90s or 2000s, who has never been to an arcade or restaurant that had a KOF 98 machine on display... you got tokens and played this wonderful game on those arcade controls and in the end you got GAME OVER and ran out of tokens? At these times you are feeling like a nostalgic old man like me too! and this King of Fighters 98 is without a doubt the BEST KING OF FIGHTERS of the franchise!! I have more memories and it was the one I played the most on various KOF 98 machines in countless places I went to over the years of my life! more than 97, 99, 2000, 2001 and 2002 and if I were SNK... I would release 99 and 2000 for STEAM RIGHT NOW!

Of all the legacy KoF games, I think I like this one best, but it's a very close tie with '2002 and XIII, which are both awesome games. I feel '98 UM FE has the best mix between the quality of its combat mechanics and presentation, with a big mix of characters to play with. Honestly, the difference between this and '2002 is pretty small as far as I can see, and although I've not played that one as much as this, I just personally prefer some of the character move-sets and voice acting in this game. XIII has better graphics, some nice character customisation and other good modern features, and in some ways is a bit easier to pick up and play as a beginner, but it's also more complex in terms of the combo potential. I'm what you'd call an intermediate level fighting game player, in that I can get very good at them when I practice long enough, but I'm not quite dedicated enough to practice over and over enough for the very highest levels of play. For this kind player I think '98 might well be the best game of the series, as it's learning curve is kind of steep, but once it clicks the whole game opens up to you without needing to study very advanced combo-chaining systems. I also like how difficult the default single player Arcade mode is in KoF '98. I think I beat '2002 on my few credits, whereas KoF '98 I still cannot even get to the boss after 14 hours of play, no matter how many credits I use. This is really good for legacy games, and gamers like me who're content to play offline when they're not in the mood for online matches. I've not played this one online, so can't comment on whether it's much good or not. There's an estimated 60-90 players a day for KoF '98 all in all at the time of writing, but that may cover consoles as well, and there's a fairly healthy number of people playing it over on Fightcade. But I'd advise getting this Steam version as the presentation is really nice, and there's tonnes of content to play with before you'll want to move over to online play. Definitely one of the best fighting games I've played, 10/10

Mr SNK can you please make one new game of king of fighter classic into one combine all from kof 94 to 2003 from stages,soundtrack and all fighters and not the collection but a whole new game using all the classic thing...

PRO's +Great roster +Nostalgia +One of the best ports of the game to date. +Solid game play from the SNK team that has stood the test of time. CON's -It is very challenging to pull off some moves and super moves on a PlayStation analog controller. I find myself losing at critical moments in a game due to either a combo not pulling off correctly or a super move turning into a standing punch or low, strong kick. Why it would register correctly on one side of the screen and not on the other is beyond me. It seems there is a lag in the input when using a controller (digital or analog) for some odd reason. I will update this review to confirm if the same applies to an Xbox controller when I purchase one.
