READ REVIEW This game can be a lot of fun, yes. But there are some things you should know, both good and bad, before purchase. THE BAD; -When you download this game, the version you have is NOT the version you should be playing. You need to go into the games properties, click on Game Versions & Beta, and download Evrima. That is the version everyone plays on, and you will NOT get the true Isle experience if you do not download it. -This game lags and has bugs and frequently crashes. There is no tutorial and there is no map (unless you go online to islemaps- which is a must), and there is no key for any of the symbols. You need to look up everything to understand what it is you are smelling as your dino, and where you are on the island. -As of writing this, there has been a "bug" for the last two months that deletes your dino even on a safe save. Once you log out, your dino is GONE. I say bug in quotations because it's been happening so long that I do not think it is accidental, but intentional. I don't know if this is a way to try and keep the full grown Rex population down, or if it's a temporary measure, but it is very frustrating. My suggestion (at this time), is that until this is fixed, and unless you are fine with losing hours of progress, not to play the Rex. He takes SO LONG to grow- which is understandable- but spending upwards of 5 hours to grow him just to lose him on a log out is incredibly annoying. -Do NOT go into this game thinking you will automatically get to a full grown anything. There are some very kind players, but the game is about survival. You ARE going to get eaten. As a baby, as a juvi, as an adult, it doesn't matter. Some runs are good, some runs are bad, and some runs are ruined by large packs. It happens, don't get too attached to your dino. -People cheat in every game, and The Isle is no exception. I've had a baby bepi almost murder my full grown Cera with one tiny little peck, and I've seen Rex's with speed boosts and infinite stamina. Just... be aware. THE GOOD; -The game, when it isn't lagging to all hell, is beautiful. Turn that ridiculous music they have all the way down and enjoy the quiet moments. -Having friends to play with in this game makes it 100 times more fun. Your survival rate will go up, too. -Private servers, if you can find one you like, are a much better experience. It will be no less brutal, but there will often be keys and rules that balance the game. -Being a Dinosaur is, believe it or not, a lot of fun. The way your dino moves, the calls and sounds they make, the way they hunt, it can all be very immersive and make for a really entertaining time. -Not all, maybe not even most, but SOME of the players will be very kind. I've had big Rex's hunt for me, I've had herbies adopt me when I'm a carnivore, I've had mix packs come to my rescue. I've had deinos (gators) that think I'm cute and protect me even though I'm a tiny little Troodon, and I've even had an Carno who tested the water before I swam across by hurling themselves in first. Kindness CAN get you killed in this game, but sometimes... it's awfully sweet. This game is a lot of fun, no matter how annoying and frustrating it can be at times. Hopefully, and I say this with doubt, they spend some time fixing the bugs and making it better. EDIT 7/3/26; Not a fan of this update, and no idea if the bug that deletes your dino is even fixed. The new skin selector is actually one of the worst changes I've seen to a game in a while, and (I know it's hard to believe) the game still lags and crashes- maybe even more so now since there was a graphics "boost". Gonna give it a few days but might call it and retire this game if the experience doesn't get better.

10/10 game Spawned in 5 times as a baby gator and instantly was munched on by bigger gators. Managed to respawn in a less deadly area. Grew to about 60% then found other baby gators. I am now the protector of 6 other baby gators while they grow. We even have a pet PT that hangs around us. Best dino life sim

I'll be totally honest, first attempt I did refund at the 2 hour mark as buttons didn't work, couldn't find food, saw no players, server sorting buttons didn't work.... It seemed terrible and non functioning. I then found a YouTube video that explained I was not playing the correct version. On steam on the game page there is a cog (options) when you click this go to properties a d versions and switch to 'Evrima' the base version has not seen support/updates in 4 years but Evrima version is being regularly updated so this is the one you need to play. No I'm on this one everything functions, unofficial servers high player limits and make sure you go to servers with AI on (this is food like deer, boar etc) I'm now 90 hours in and totally hooked, loads of dinosaurs I've not yet tried, not laid eggs and raised young, not been in large Dino fights so I've still loads to do. Just managed to prime my raptor through all 4 growths (you can prestige when fully grown and carry skills to new Dino) Don't get me wrong the game is absolutely brutal and getting a large Dino from baby to combat ready is really difficult unless you are unemployed or work unusual hours so can play when not many people are on as for example a baby t rex is an easy meal to almost any other dinosaur. Raptors are a good start point they can jump onto rocks for safety against most species and raptor players seem the friendliest with 90% happy to invite you into their pack or just let you hang around whereas pretty much everything else will just eat you whether you are the same species or not.

Do this before playing: Manage > Properties > Game Versions > Evrima . If you don't you will load into the first version of the game that hasn't been updated since 2022 and is basically abandonware. Evrima version is full of life and updated monthly.

With around about 2000 hours with The Isle, I finally decided by now I should write a review. This is about a 50/50 split with both Legacy and Evrima. Evrima is the current updated branch. Here's how to access it: The Isle > Properties > Betas > Beta Participation > Evrima The Isle is a sandbox, creature survival game that scratches the hardcore itch. For gameplay, you choose either an official or unofficial (community) server, where you can then choose between Carnivore, Herbivore or Omnivore. You're thrown straight into the environment with no guidance, you learn everything through trial and error. This game will take a LOT of time to learn, as there are a lot of mechanics the game will not tell you. These vary from unique abilities the creatures have, as well as some environmental features. With the latest update introducing a gameplay loop called the Elder system, this otherwise goalless game now has a true incentive for your time spent, Once you're fully grown (100%) you will be faced with two choices: Entomb, or not. Entombing simply means: restarting your growth cycle while carrying over and buffing any mutation perks you selected. I must make an important note that they are NOT permanent and you will have to start over if you die in any other fashion. This adds a lot of high risk, high reward stakes. There is also the whole subject of 'prime' and 'frail' elders but that's too complicated to share here. Once you get over the initial steep learning curve, the game can be incredibly enjoyable IF (BIG IF) you don't take it too seriously. Larger animals will take several hours (up to 8-12 hours) to grow from juvenile to elder, so it's a very good idea to take into consideration how much commitment your patience can afford to endure. If you're buying the game ONLY to play the large carnivores or herbivores, you're in for a rough time. Graphically, the game is stunning. The art directives are masters of their craft with the designs of the animals themselves, as well as the textures and the animations that truly don't compare to anything else within this genre. The game is running on UE5, which infamously has a ton of optimisation problems, however I have noticed increased performance stability recently. Still a few crashes here and there but it's working itself out. I range from 60-100 frames on max settings. (My specs should be attached in the review.) Double check your specs to see if you can handle the game because Evrima is MUCH MORE intensive compared to the specs of legacy which are the ones presented on the steam page currently. There are a lot of bugs, as to be expected with Early Access titles. Evrima is very slow going with development but it's not really that difficult to just come back to it later if the state of the game isn't your cup of tea right now. TLDR: it's a great game for dinosaur enthusiastic nerds like myself, or if you enjoy the sandbox hardcore genre. It can take some practice but once you figure it out, it can actually be pretty rewarding to just enjoy the game for what it is. Play on community servers that enforce rules to keep the game from being full-on anarchy. Start small, do NOT begin with the huge animals (unless you're an absolute masochist), and embrace the act of survival.
