Good game. If you like battle brothers, this is kind of like that, just less freedom in where you move and the combat is easier. It's not as good as battle brothers obviously, but it does decent. After a while I could care less about the random missions from the towns. The visuals aren't that great honestly and the diversity of the characters is pretty low with only 7 classes. The combat is decent though. It is worth, just get on sale.

I bought the Iron Oath because its advertised as comparable to Battle Brothers. It is not really, other than the framing device of being a mercenary company and the existence of an overland map with RNG contracts. Iron Oath is more of a narrative TRPG. There is a main story which is good enough for me to see it through to completion, and there are a fair number of side quests with entertaining writing which carries the game. However, it's not replayable. There are only enough sidequests to last one playthrough, and they're already starting to repeat now that I'm near the end. The build diversity and game balance is poor. Statistics other than health and power are mostly worthless, and while it is possible to do fancy things like push enemies into traps, there is rarely any reason to do anything other than crowd control particularly dangerous enemies and kill the remainder with direct damage. Since most of the enemies are very samey, once you figure it out all battles follow a very similar pattern.

Veteran of Battle Brothers here. The game plays very similarly, with the difference that your mercenaries are more magical and have predetermined classes - this can be both a bad and a good thing. Another con and pro at the same time - there is an overall plot that guides you to do something, making it less free than BB. Last but not least - unfortunately, the map is not generated, which means replayability is actually not that big. Pros: - Very nice pixel graphics, and the general art style is good, - Good BB vibes but with a twist. Cons: - IMO not enough variety in enemies and maps (this is my feeling rather than a mathematical check).

The game has a solid base to work from. The main classes are fairly diverse and the different abilities offer many possible ways to approach a fight tactically. The dungeon crawling is simplistic, but it works. In combat, there's enough environmental hazards to make it more interesting. Contrary to a few of the niche "Mercenary Management" games, this one has an actual central story, with a main quest that you follow, and with character arcs and what have you, for some of the starting characters. Where the game stumbles, is in the repetitive nature of combat. As varied as you can make the larger encounters and as interesting as some of the uphill struggles are; you're still made to fight 2 fantasy-wolves and 1 zombie for about 80% of the time. And then it becomes a fairly boring par-of-the-course encounter. I'm not saying this is the game's death sentence, but it is holding it back. The fatigue and resting mechanic is great, and you'll want to take a big team with you, take on bigger contracts etc. but the problem is that in short order, you'll have 2 of each class, and the subclasses aren't diverse enough to make them all into "individuals", in the way that Battle Brothers or Wartales do. And that's where the game falls short: the different mercenaries in your roster don't feel unique enough. I'd love to see more outspoken personalities, more subclasses, and more cosmetically different characters. As it stands the best thing you can do to keep characters apart, is changing their colours and portraits. Upgrading their equipment doesn't change their models at all. All in all, solid 7/10. I would recommend the game, either when it goes on sale, or if this kind of game is REALLY up your alley.

Overall I like this game. It is a fun little turn based swords and sorcery game. The story line gives you basic goals and keeps you directed. Story is not super complicated (like a RPG) but does have some twists and set backs. Also the occasional funny/unexpected bit of dialogue pops up. So far overall game progression and quests/jobs have felt well paced and kept me engaged. I enjoy the dungeon exploration system. it is based on character skills rather than you needing to solve puzzles. Battles take 5 to 10 min. I appreciate that the game makes it relatively easy to take a break. it is pretty easy to learn the game systems and character classes. I like that you can skip prologue and tutorials on replay! The graphics (2D sprites that have a throwback feel circa 1999) are not awful but do not compare well with recent similar games. Inventory management/repair is a little clunky especially as your army gets larger. Replay value was not as good as I would have hoped. Overall I would recommend this game.
