Dec. 2024
Review of The Forest Quartet The Forest Quartet is a beautiful and deeply evocative narrative puzzle game that blends emotional storytelling with atmospheric design. Developed by Bedtime Digital Games, the title offers a poignant exploration of loss, grief, and the healing process through the lens of a mesmerizing musical journey. Story and Themes The Forest Quartet tells the story of a jazz singer who has passed away, leaving her bandmates to grapple with their grief. Players take on the role of her spirit, guiding the band members through their emotional struggles in a lush and surreal forest setting. The narrative is heartfelt and relatable, presenting grief not as something to "solve" but as a process to experience and honor. Each bandmate's unique journey adds layers to the story, offering a rich tapestry of emotions. Gameplay The gameplay revolves around environmental puzzles and exploration. Players manipulate the environment to overcome obstacles, often using sound and music as tools. The puzzles are intuitive, creative, and rewarding, seamlessly integrated into the narrative. They strike a delicate balance between being challenging enough to engage and accessible enough to ensure the story's flow isn't disrupted. Art and Sound Design The game's art direction is stunning, with vibrant and dreamlike visuals that capture the mystical essence of the forest. With dynamic lighting and thoughtful design that make exploration a joy. The sound design complements the visuals perfectly, creating an immersive experience that draws players into the emotional core of the game. Length and Replayability At roughly 2-4 hours, The Forest Quartet is a concise experience, but its emotional impact lingers long after the credits roll. While it may lack traditional replayability, its poignant narrative and lush world may entice players to revisit it for the sheer atmosphere and emotional resonance. Pros: Beautifully crafted narrative and themes Innovative puzzles integrated with the story Stunning visuals and art direction Outstanding soundtrack and sound design Cons: Short playtime may leave some players wanting more Some puzzles might feel overly simple for seasoned puzzle enthusiasts Final Verdict: The Forest Quartet is a masterful blend of art, music, and storytelling, delivering an emotional and unforgettable experience. Its brevity is compensated by the depth of its narrative and the beauty of its presentation. While it may not cater to players seeking complex gameplay mechanics or extended playtime, it’s a perfect choice for those who appreciate emotionally rich, artistically driven indie games. Rating: 9/10 A touching journey that showcases the power of games as a storytelling medium.

The Forest Quartet offers a special experience by telling a story of sorrow, grief and loss, deals also with topics such as depression and self-doubt. Game and level design is appealing, fitting and artfully created. In my opinion, sound and musical score in general, as well as the sound design for itself, was well done and deserves the most praise, and I say this even though there are also a few points that could be constructivley criticized, when Nina sings in the game, it sounds a bit synthetic and plastic, it would have been much nicer to hear her sing properly, and maybe in a few variations so it's not always the same. In the scenes with the other band members, there are a few places where you can't understand the dialog very well and there are always gaps during the game that could have been filled with more background sound. The puzzles are extremely easy to solve and the game can be completed very quickly. Nevertheless, it is a special game in terms of the idea and the story, as well as the artistic implementation.
