I bought this the same time as King Arthur: A Knights Tale, and I have to say, this is by far the superior product. Where King Arthur is bland, drab, and uninteresting, The Dungeon of Naheulbeuk shines. The art direction is great. The characters and enemies all have a cartooney charm that fits together really well, and the entire dungeon is varied and interesting, each with it's own quirks and puzzles. Movement is a bit spongy, but a minor annoyance. The combat is well-thought out, with character skills having several choices depending on play styles and what you want from them. You get 6 to begin with, with a chance to choose one more early in the game to make it 7. What I really like is the ability to synergize character skills, for example, using one character to lock an enemy in place to allow another to execute a powerful attack, or just having the ogre turn the dwarf into a lethal lawn dart. There is a lot to consider, but it's far from overwhelming. You get one movement point and one action point, so you have to consider your positioning well, otherwise the enemy will punish you. Character loot is solid, loads of potions to choose from, the weapon and armour progression is well balanced, and your character model changes as you get higher level loot, which is a nice touch. The story has some humour in it, as the characters constantly break the 4th wall, and really, this leans into the "typical" DnD session where a bunch of inept players who don't really know each other decide to straight up murder everything in sight. You can even get a "Murderhobo" potion to help achieve that. The charcters all have solid dialouge, but the clear winner for me is the Dwarf, who's uncompromising hatred of the Elf allows the delivery of the best one-liners, like "Why don't you go p!ss your tea somewhere else" and his constant referrals to anyone his doesn't like as "fat fuks". There is an RNG element to the game, that is undeniable, and therefor carries that XCOM element of lining up a perfect attack only to watch your character to pull a critical fail and bollocks the whole thing. This is in line with the DnD experience of rolling the dreaded "1", but also comes with two caveats: (a) the enemies are also liable to fail like this and (b) the Randomiser bar. I really like this mechanic, where essentially every fail fills a bar that grants you certain perks depending on how full it is, such as give a character an extra attack one round or even heal the entire party. A fail in one round can lead to a game-changing move later on, so it feels less punishing. The bar even stays filled between encounters, so you could start a tricky fight with an extra edge. It's worth noting I have played this on Normal difficulty, which wasn't too bad. I had to restart a few tricky fights, but not once did I feel the urge to wing the pc out the window. I have read that higher difficulties make the RNG seem worse, but I can't comment. All in all, I have really enjoyed this game, it's been a while since I had a such a well-rounded turn-based game experience. 8/10.

SHORT REVIEW This review is for the base game without any DLC. The Dungeon of Naheulbeuk is a turn based tactical combat dungeon crawler which is apparently based on a French satirical cartoon poking fun at a D&D adventuring party. The game relies heavily on humour and the interaction between the characters which I find quite amusing but as humour is subjective its very much a case of “your mileage may vary” on this one. PLOT: The plot is okay but not great but that doesn't matter. Its a satire for the RPG trope as opposed to a serious game and it is the humour which really carries it. The interactions are scripted so there is actually very little “role playing” input to vary the outcome. I found the ending to be a real damp squid and it really let the game down. GAMEPLAY: 3D dungeon exploration game with turn based tactical combat system. Personally I found the pacing of the combat a bit off, even if you turn the animation speed up to maximum it feels a bit slow and sluggish at times. This isn't helped by the party size of 8, often against a similar number of enemies meaning each round takes a long time. DIFFICULTY: Its quite hard. I started playing on the 2nd difficulty level (Tavern Song) which was okay for a while but after running into one particularly difficult fight I resorted to dropping it to Gripping Tale. How people manage on Gzor's Nightmare is beyond me. GRAPHICS & SOUND: Graphics are pretty nice and what you would expect from what is a relatively recent recent game although there a few performance issues. One the sound side of things the voice acting is excellent and whilst there is ambient background sound it is just that, i.e. in the background, and isn't at all intrusive which is nice. REPLAY VALUE: Poor. The encounters are scripted so there will be virtually no variation in the plot and once you've heard a particular gag it generally doesn't improve with a second telling. There is a choice of which of the three available NPC's you take as the 8th character but that is about it. ISSUES AND BUGS: Works “straight out of the box”. There are some performance issues with this game that I will expand on in the long review and it did completely lock up once requiring an Ctrl/Alt/Delete reset when I was cleaning up some old saved game files. ACHIEVEMENTS AND TRADING CARDS: Full integration with the Steam platform, Steam achievements and trading cards for those interested. VALUE FOR MONEY: It a “wait for the discount in a sale” type of game. I think its a bit expensive at full price but that might be a sign of my age. Although its only 3 years old now the base game manages 65% off in steam sales making it very reasonable but add in the DLC as well and that would make this an expensive proposition. LONG REVIEW Whilst The Dungeon of Naheulbeuk can be played as any other dungeon exploration game with turn based tactical combat system it is a game that is very much aimed at a target audience and that is people how have played Tabletop Role Playing Games. I suspect those who haven't played tabletop games might miss out on a lot of the humour. There is a narrator for the story but mercifully it only appears occasionally and isn't at all intrusive. There is also the choice of a male or female voice for the narrator which is a nice touch and not something I've seen elsewhere before. The graphical presentation might make might make people think it is suitable for a younger audience but the language is quite “colourful” at times with liberal use of the “F” Word the occasional references to nudity (there is no actual nudity in the game) so it's not suitable for younger players (or when there are younger people within earshot). The WOKE brigade might also be offended but they can go die in a ditch. As I said above there are some performance issues with this game. The overall optimisation on PC is extremely poor, I'd even go as far as to say exceptionally awful. There is no way this game should be a resource intense as it is and, even though my machine is well above the recommended specifications I had to turn the shadow quality and resolutions down to low to stop it stuttering. There is also an issue with party movement which is rather clunky and sometimes seems to get stuck, its as if all the characters get a bit too close together and all start tripping over each other. The final issue is that occasionally the subtitles and voice over don't quite match, this isn't a major issue, just a minor irritation. I believe the original was in French so I wonder if something got lost in translation.

Its a fun game, it tries too hard to be funny, but its funny and have some nice characters. Combat can be hard and sometimes it will be hard, i get some Xcom hit % vibes, with 90% chance to hit and miss 3x times in a roll... at least the game give something back at you for that. Animations can get repetitive, but you can hold a button so it goes fast. Buy this on sale, not worth full price.
