A slightly lackluster ending with a great journey. The Developer did a great job setting tone with the game and keeping it consistent throughout. This helped build up the tension set up jump-scares very well. The story and changing of elements in the environment kept my attention and made it to where I wanted to know more. There is some replay-ability with 3 different endings (the easiest to achieve being the bad ending). The game is fairly linear so it does make it more difficult to figure out what else you can do to get an alternative ending. After doing as much as I could to get an alternative ending, I still couldn't get something else (which felt a bit deflating). The story is human and relatable. I can really appreciate it and it is consistent throughout the entire game. The things you experience as you play through the game ties in very well to the story the Devs are telling (rather than it feeling like a random experience meant to be scary for scary sake). I believe this game is one of the first major games for the Devs. With that being the case, this is incredibly impressive and I eagerly look forward to what they will release next. The Death blew some life into me I've always been very fascinated with Vietnamese horror and this was my first step into the genre inside the gaming medium. Vietnamese horror films such as Ngôi Nhà Trong Hẻm (The House in the Alley), (not necessarily a great film by any means, Vietnam isn't known for good horror cinema which is unfortunate because there's so much potential), and the Urban legend of Ma Lai have stuck with me since I heard of them when I was younger, so when I saw this go on sale, I knew I had to pick it up. This is game is decent! I've been playing a slew of poorly made asset flips lately, that it felt super refreshing to boot into this game and see how nice it all looked. The lighting is moody and appropriately sets the mood for the game, the models and textures look tangible and the setting has a very "lived in" feel. It's all very competently made and it only made my playtime that much more enjoyable. This is a walking simulator to its core, there is nothing out to get you, it's just you and the sopping wet atmosphere. The story was a lot of fun to unravel! I played this game on a Discord call with a friend, and they were designated the job of researching the lore to help us understand and connect with the world more. The legend and stories I've read about Than Trung are absolutely mortifying and understandably feared amongst many Vietnamese people in the world. There are plenty of good sources explaining the demon more in depth, I'd recommend giving it all a read when possible. I don't think this game is perfect however. The walk speed and sprint are SO damn slow and it makes backtracking and getting lost absolutely miserable. I also noticed that sometimes the crosshair wouldn't quite pick up on the interactive items and the game would turn into a pixel hunt, which I've been growing tired of lately. Also quite a few of the scares are flimsy. I found myself laughing at a few of the jumpscares because I'd see the models pop into place before they were triggered or disappear in similar fashion. This isn't overly detrimental, but as a horror game it does impact the overall experience. This doesn't make it any less fun to play however. Another issue I have with this title is the puzzles and how long and boring they are. I was hoping they'd be more Resident Evil or Silent Hill inspired but they instead turned out to be monotonous toys like slide puzzles and a Tower of Hanoi that took me UPWARDS OF 10 MINUTES. These are a major pacebreaker and i was super irritated by them. I hope the developers learn how to make a more engaging puzzle experience in their next games! The Death | Than Trung is a well made horror game that serves as a love letter to the developers country and the folklore that inspired it. It's worth picking up! For a base price of $5.99USD, ($7.49NZD), you can't really go wrong! There's a lot to appreciate here, despite the puzzles being awful and the walk speed being too slow for a walking simulator. I hope to see more games from these guys in the future! The Death | Than Trung gets a : 7.8/10 Check out [url=https://store.steampowered.com/curator/44654461/]my Curator Page for more!
