Man of Medan is the first entry in season one of the Dark Pictures Anthology, delivering a horror movie experience adapted into video game format with light gameplay that recalls the charm of β€˜90s FMV and PS1 horror. The story and characters are well-crafted, though they sometimes struggle to stay fully committed to the horror vibe. There are moments when humor undermines the tension, reducing the scare factor. Even so, the writing and performances are strong, building a likable group of main characters. The plot is engaging, centering on four friends who, during a scuba trip, get entangled in a thrilling mix of modern piracy, paranormal encounters, occult themes, and alternate military history. It’s a wild blend, yet it comes together well with a sense of mystery. An overarching narrative is tied together by a character called "The Curator," who guides the player through the story, offering cryptic hints and eerie observations that link the anthology. The motion capture work is top-notch, especially in the facial animations, which showcase subtle, realistic emotions. Every line of dialogue was mocapped to the voice actors’ faces, bringing the characters to life without the exaggerated mocap quirks of older games. Man of Medan is visually stunning, with fantastic facial animations, character design, and eerie environmental work. The dimly lit ship setting is brooding and spooky, with foggy, shadow-filled spaces illuminated by flashlights. Wet surfaces glisten, and a rust-tinged mist fills the ship. The sound design enhances the experience, with screeching violins, creaking environments, dripping water, and howling wind that all contribute to a truly atmospheric horror setting. While jump scares are the primary scare tactic, the game builds tension through its environment and sound design. Props in the foreground and background, along with depth-of-field effects, guide your eyes toward subtle movements at the edges of the screen, heightening the unsettling atmosphere. There are some downsides: The tank-style controls feel outdated and cumbersome, limiting the flow of movement and exploration. It’s reminiscent of PS1-era control schemes, where you often find yourself awkwardly bumping into walls or struggling with slow, imprecise flashlight controls. Additionally, there’s no option to skip dialogue or cutscenes, which can be frustrating on repeat playthroughs when you want to make new choices without rewatching every scene. Despite these drawbacks, I genuinely enjoyed my time with Man of Medan. As a fan of the horror genre, this game felt like a solid horror movie with both an engaging plot and satisfying scares, all wrapped up in an interactive choose-your-own-adventure format.

Just 100% and have to say I loved every minute of it. This game has so many different endings and worth playing through a few times. My only issue because I'm an achievement junkie is that you need to find a friend who has a copy to get all the achievements. I would love to give a big thanks to Spine for her help on the co-op part ;)

A solid follow-up from the studio that brought us Until Dawn. For fans of the previous title a lot will feel familiar in Man of Medan, which continues the decision-based narrative, QTE format. We again find ourselves controlling each one of a group of characters, each with their own evolving personality traits, changing based on our choices. For our unsuspecting actors we make moral or practical decisions; some of the heart and some more cerebral, determining each of their fates as we do so. A WARNING though, that it may not be the fate of our controlled character that we are deciding. Much like the previous installment, all is not is always as it seems. Man of Medan retains the high-quality production value of the first title, with excellent voice acting and model capture that really bring the characters to life. The aesthetic, mechanics and episodic format will also feel very familiar for fans of the previous title, all of which are great. The studio has expanded upon the decision making mechanic, which can now steer the story in far more directions, allowing for fairly unique paths through the game. There are also a multitude of - distinctive - endings to see, meaning that the game has a lot of replayability. In fact to 100% it you'll NEED to replay the game in order to see all of the different scenes and levels. Fret not though, as the game sits at around the 4-5 hour completion mark - the sweet spot for the story in my opinion. Unfortunately the odd model glitch does present itself when the game transitions to one of its unique-to-decision(s) cutscenes, breaking the 4th wall a little. There is also the tendency for the game to progress forwards into the next area with no apparent warning that it's going to do so - walking through an open door, opening the wrong door, or interacting with the wrong object in a room. I WANTED TO EXPLORE THE AREA GUYS, NOW I MISSED SOMETHING, DIDN'T I? The environments are also a little limited, with the second half (OR bulk) of the game taking place on a dingy ship. It's a very nice dingy ship, but the PS4 / PS5 generation of hardware and my PC can do a lot more than the game is throwing at it from its release date. I guess the previous Sony "exclusive" budget was a lot higher. With those few issues said though, the game is fantastic. It boasts a genuinely intriguing story and a high-fidelity decision mechanic that brings a lot of value in terms of both story progression and replayability. A definite recommendation, even at full price.

I love when a game is based on a "true story" and then adds its own spin on it. It's a fun and quality experience, but the main plot point is blatantly obvious in the first 15 minutes of the game. 8/10

Man of Medan is an interactive drama and paranormal horror game. It is part of the The Dark Pictures Anthology series. It’s a game where 5 characters can be played by you or with a small group of other players. The evolution of the story is influenced by the player's choice and those choices can alter relationships between each character. I found that this game had a slow start, meaning that it took me a while to get into the story. But when I got grabbed by it, I completed the game quite fast. I had quite a few jump scares! Graphics and sounds are nice! I think that it’s better to play this game with a controller instead of the keyboard. I found it was harder to control characters with a keyboard than the controller. The story is about 4 friends and a captain going on a boat on an expedition to find a WWII wreck. While on the expedition, they get caught in a storm and find the shipwreck. They say that this game is inspired by the urban legend of SS Ourang Medan, a ghost ship. Strange things happen on this boat and you’ll have to focus on keeping all characters alive. Unfortunately, in my first play through, I managed to save only 3 of them. Took me about 4-5 hours to complete the story once. To fully understand the story, I think the game needs to be played more than once.
