It's not a bad game, but there are a few things that make it just okay for me. I usually only post reviews when I really like a game, but I'll make an exception this time. The game is pretty straightforward in both its story and puzzles. The platforming isn't demanding, but the controls aren't precise either. I ended up dying in silly ways several times because of this. To be fair, many games in this genre have the same issue. The good thing is that the achievements for not dying are still easy to get in this game. I understand that the music working like a radio was meant for immersion (or at least I think that was the idea), making us feel part of the world, like we're there in the moment listening to the radio just like the kid. But for me, it didn't work. Having a chase sequence with 3-5 minutes of no sound at all made it tedious, not to mention that these sequences already felt long, repetitive, and slow to me. The puzzles are almost non-existent: Move this cube here, turn on the light there, interact with this thing over there… There was never a moment where I had to sit and think a bit. It's not a bad game per se, but there are so many excellent games in the same genre that this one ends up being just okay. That's why I still recommended it, though I think Steam needs a third neutral option for reviews.

The atmosphere of this game is wonderful. Amazing art. Snappy animation. Delightful world building. For someone with generally a short patience with platformers, this one doesn't overstay its welcome, and it is usually generous with its checkpoints, which you will need. The politics are a little on the nose, and I would have appreciated a story that left a little more to the imagination, letting the player draw their own conclusions. Almost everything is satiric reference to current events, so I think this game will unfortunately date itself in about about one news cycle. But if you read it as a manifesto of the moment, then the game proclaims its message loud and clear. Definitely on the short side.

It's the end of the world as you know it, and Bezos/Musk/etc moved to Mars with their cronies. A being-chased-while-running-and-platforming game - or as I kept thinking of it as I played it: a child-killing sim, par excellence. Pros: * Main char's voice actor is awesome, and the humor is delightfully right on the edge of acceptability. * Music is both unique and well-chosen, and the state-sponsored DJs are a hoot. * Level design is excellent. * Expect to die... a lot . Cons: * The hating on the rich, which I'm usually amused by, gets a bit heavy after awhile. TL;DR: If you want a semi-difficult pursued-while-platforming game, 8/10; else, avoid.

Quick rating: 6.5 Longer review: The Cub continues the world building from Golf Club Nostalgia, a game I enjoyed a lot (apart from the Iron Will achievement). The Cub is also a LIMBO-like... a genre I greatly enjoy. As such, I was very hyped for this game. And, it's not bad. But far from great. The Good: Art is really nice, the radio station is great, the story is enjoyable. Gameplay is ok. The Not As Good: This game has tags of Puzzle, Precision Platformer, and Puzzle Platformer... and I'd say it's none of these. It is a platformer. But it has 0 puzzles in it whatsoever. And it's not what I'd consider a precision platformer... although some sections are a little challenging, mostly because the game can play a bit jank, not because it's really designed to be precision. The game is short. I got all achievements + all in-game items for 100% in under 3 hours. And that includes nearly an hour spent on doing Chapter 1 deathless... for those not achievement hunting, you may finish this game under 2 hours (or just a little over). At times, the foreground art can get in the way of visibility. And ledge grabbing is fairly inconsistent on whether it'll work or not. All in all, the game is not bad. I give it a recommendation, but not a glowing one. If you like run-right chase sequences with a nice world and interesting story/music... this will be a pleasant time for you. A bit like the game Little Orpheus. If that doesn't sound like your type of game... then I'd avoid or pick up on a steep sale.

Man, The Cub is insane and a work of art! Massive congrats to the team, this project is pure art and a labour of love. From an awesome OST music score that fits perfectly, to an epic radio station talk show that plays while you do your thing solving puzzles and platforming like warm butter to the pristine hand drawn art this is what video games are all about and it feels good. I will keep it short, if you love Inside, Somerville, Planet of Lana and other games like that instant purchase The Cub it is as good if not better in some aspects and 100% top shelf quality of the storey / puzzle platformer genera. During the demo I fell in love with the visuals, the 2D had drawn art is simply first rate and dope. The gameplay matches and is smooth and has very satisfying platforming and puzzles. I never thought it have a sound track and the music and the radio station where people just talk take the whole package over the top. Even the storey made me not want to skip and I listened with a hypnotic trance. As one that loves video games it makes me smile when you get a whole package like this and everything just works and fits together like a freshly solved rubix cube. Much love and respect to the devs, I salute you for your work of art, feels good man! If any of the words that I wrote form a picture that makes you happy or smile press that add to cart button and have your self an insane weekend while you play The Cub and remember I am the son of no one. Update: Jan 21 : so I have completed the game now and only have 3 achievements left to get. Ok, that was totally insane, a work of art and there is just so many hidden ideas, comments, warnings and it is just jammed packed with thoughts on our world and humanity. This game is mega deep Brah, that is what I love about these games and I just can't get enough of them. You really have to wonder what goes on in the minds of the devs that came up with this game and all the content in it regardless of how great all the platforming, puzzles, timing, art, music, etc are. An incredible ride which I will not forget and I truly appreciate, I almost feel like every video gamer should play through this game once and really take note what the devs are trying to say, the message is just as massive as how amazing the whole game was put together. Again, thanks devs for the The Cub I really appreciate it.
