If you like 8-bit horror games feel yourself at home cause Count Lucanor deliver everything that make goosebumps on your skin. It might feel like cartoony look is not scary at all but the game makes up for it with the right setting and atmosphere which surely is unique for such title. Exploring abandoned mansion is interesting and plot surely will engage you for some time. But be aware as there're monsters lurking in the shadows! Recommended for people who like simple yet interesting and somewhat creepy adventure.

Now this, THIS is horror. 10/10. You will very likely die a few bullshit deaths, yes. Will it be scary? yes Sound design : 10/10. The monsters are terrifying. Some of the noises they make genuinely give me a physical lurching reaction that still gets me, even on repeat playthroughs. Story: 10/10. Everything that the game builds up is well-designed and well-set up to the point where you can figure out super secret things on your first playthrough if you *REALLY* want to. The game's gameplay loop and puzzles are fun to think through. The easier puzzles rack your brain for at least a few moments and some of the harder puzzles are thankfully either not necessary or have multiple ways of solving them, to really drive home the fact that the world is a scary place. Buy this game if you want to be scared, even after you finish the game and press alt + F4.

I've had this game for quite a while but never played it until some hours ago. This was mainly due to the negative reviews I read which were so disparaging that I ended up uninstalling after having it sit in my library for years. I guess I never paid attention to the fact that both The Count Lucanor and Yuppie Psycho are Baroque Decay games, but I quickly re-installed once I made that discovery, as I'm still on a big high from recently finishing YP. I will say that some of the other negative reviewers were right about the inability to sprint being pretty annoying, but part of me feels like that was intentional because when comparing it to YP, the game feels a lot shorter. If I were able to sprint everywhere, I think I would have finished it in maybe 3.5 hours instead of 5. Others mentioned having issues with the save mechanic, and I was fully expecting to be frustrated with it once I reached the first one. However, it is clearly explained once you reach the castle garden, and when you interact with the save point, the protagonist thinks out loud exactly what you need to do in order to save. Regarding the genre, I can understand where people were coming from about it not feeling like a horror game. While The Count Lucanor won't give you a fright, it does have spooky elements. If you're looking for something more than that, you might be a little disappointed. However, I will say I got two small jump scares from the enemies just because I wasn't expecting them, but it's definitely not scary at all. I guess if you're like me looking for something to scratch the itch of YP, The Count Lucanor isn't really it. It doesn't have a dope soundtrack, mini games, or super compelling characters unfortunately. The only things the two have in common are the pixel art style, a couple sound effects like the ones that express shock or surprise, and kinda the save mechanic. BUT! The story is straight forward, easy to follow, and still charming imo. I say if you love pixel survivor games and want something you can knock out in a weekend or less, give The Count Lucanor a try.
