been playing on and off for 5 years. never uninstalled the game or re downloaded. game is incredibly unique and i keep coming back from time to time. the devs really care and have been keeping up to date for years and still implement large updates to the game. truly a gem.

I'm an arcade janitor and the thought of funneling my tiny paycheck back into the place I work seems stupid. Instead I play The Coin Game. And at work I think to myself "this is just like The Coin Game" and continue to not spend real money there.

It's nice because I can spend $100 trying to get a stuffed duck and not feel bad about it. Scratches the itch to play believable arcade games without actually wasting a ludicrous amount of money

Story time, when I got this game I was very unaware of much of the features but I knew that you could go around the whole island doing jobs for cash and playing arcade or carnival games for tickets or prizes money. I go about doing this for hours, trying to get enough tickets for an expensive prize. About 15 minutes into going around looking for the most efficient way of earning tickets, I find one that is really good but not all too fun (it's like the gatcha ball with tickets in them), and decide that mind numbing gameplay for the quickest/most efficient way of getting tickets is okay if it means I can get the big prize. End up doing that for like... Longer than I should have... Until I finally have enough to buy the prize I want. I shred the tickets, go to the counter, and buy the prize. Now, I do not know much about this item I got, but with how many tickets it costed and how much money it took to get said tickets, it was practically solid gold in my eyes. I bike over to the pawnshop and yank it into the shredder box and click the button-- Only to see that I was sorely mistaken and the prize was hardly worth $50. After spending hundreds of dollars that I had worked around the whole island to earn and all the time I spend winning games to earn tickets, the prize was worth less money than I had put into it. Suddenly, I realized something... The value of the prize, was not supposed to be from its cash value itself, but from the work it takes to get it. You can go around and get cash anywhere, but the Coin Game wasn't made for that, the Coin Game is an experience for players to work a bit for cash, and play a while to enjoy yourself for the hard work you did. This game teaches you that it is more important to go down a long path that is fun, than it is for you to walk down a grueling short path, since both lead to the same reward. The fun you get with walking the enjoyable path has fun that you can have in the moment, while the joy you expect at the end of the path suffering might not always arrive.

How to describe the Coin Game? To call it an arcade simulator isn't wrong, but it misses out on everything else this game has to offer. It's more of a "adolescent kid on summer break on an island exclusively populated by robots (except for yourself and your pets)" simulator. There's no story, nor any required tasks. It's just you and the island doing whatever you want to do. You travel around by foot, bike, bus, after you've unlocked it, a golf cart, or in Birthday Mode, a limo, to do various activities to either make money or spend that money. The town of Islandville has 3 dedicated arcades, a shopping mall with its own arcade and movie theater, a traveling carnival with rides and games, and a waterpark. (There's even a pinball machine in the supermarket.) The variety of arcade games is staggering. If you can think of a type of arcade game, you can probably find it within at least one of the arcades. (There is a striking lack of pinball machines, though; the only one I've found is in the supermarket.) You win tickets and buy prizes to store in your home, where you live with your granny, pet goose, and tank full of fish. Your room even has a claw machine in it you can use to hone your skills for free. All this play and prizes do not come free, so how do you make money? If you're playing in Birthday Mode, just head to a cash grab booth in any arcade to start grabbing dollar bills as they're blown around you as many times as you want for free. In Survival, however, you start with a few bucks in your pocket and $10 in a savings account. To make money, you can deliver newspapers or pizza, babysit, mow the lawn, return shopping carts to the cart corral, or try your luck at lotto scratch-off cards. Then there's dumpster diving. You can usually find a usable item or two in the dumpsters around town, and any item in the game (including used scratch-off cards) can be taken to the pawnshop to be turned into cash. The game isn't perfect. It's kind of buggy at times; the controls are kind of janky (not the arcade games, which work great, but for character and vehicle movement), and for the love of God, allow the pause button to unpause the game as well. Also, the cars in the game make no effort to avoid you and collision is weird (it's handled by just clipping through you, sometimes dealing health damage, but if you're in the golf cart it can roll you or even launch you across the map if it hits you wrong). But it's an incredible achievement, especially for a one-person dev team, packed to the gills with features, and made with obvious love and care. It's definitely underpriced for how much value you get out of it, so pick it up now. :) PS: Although it's officially unsupported, it works just fine on my Steam Deck.
