'The chant' is a pretty decent AA horror title, with a spooky atmosphere, satisfying combat and a compelling (if somewhat generic) story backing it up. A tale of a cult opening up a portal to a realm of malicious supernatural forces is far from original, but overall the performances, reasonable motivations for the characters, and creepy vibes make it worthwhile. There's the odd jump-scare, though it doesn't overdo them, and instead focuses on either intense set-pieces or unsettling audio and visual elements. Whilst it isn't especially frightening, it is capable of being tense and somewhat nerve-wracking in places. Which puts it above most entries in the genre for me, and even when it isn't too scary in the action, there's other psychological tricks that it plays on the characters. The combat is fairly simple melee, but mild elements of crafting and resource management add some depth to it. There's different creatures that are more prone to certain types of weapon, and as the game progresses your character obtains special abilities that mix up the game-play. By comparison to AAA titles, such as Calisto Protocol, there's about the same level of involvement to the action, and whilst it doesn't have shooting like Resident Evil 3 Remake, it has a comparable amount of tension and better boss-battles for my tastes. Overall I think it fares quite well when placed next to titles from much more established studios. Graphically it looks quite nice, and has surprisingly good facial animations for the cut-scenes, with a high level of polish and performance. Yes, it's not quite up there with the best, but for AA it is very accomplished in every department. It's mostly a positive experience, though the plot can be a bit hokey, and at 10 or so hours to finish it isn't the longest game. However: It isn't padded out with insipid filler content like Calisto was, or have the dog-poo uninspired boss-battles of RE 3 Remake. So, you know, those were either over-rated experiences, or this is the plucky underdog taking on the big boys at their own game and beating them. To my mind it's a bit of both. AAA "horror" tends to be guff (at least, anything that isn't Evil Within, or Dead Space), and my expectations for this weren't super-high, so it was a pleasant surprise finding it to be a confident and competent effort. If not pant-sh*t*ingly so, but having said that the last time I was freaked out was playing Amnesia The Bunker, and that's a totally different kind of horror game. If you're after a trippy, third-person horror title, then this is a good one.

Pros: - Good Story - Good Graphics - Not taking cults too seriously Cons: - Combat system was a bit frustrating -buttons not intuitive on keyboard - Getting animation locked for too long dodging during combat. - Not enough materials to craft the weapons you need to effectively target creature types (certain crafting ingredients too scarce) - Would have preferred a playthrough path where "drinking the koolaid wore off" -Choosing an ending based on 'which type of creatures you killed more and which items you used' seemed odd when you don't give players the right items at the right times to do that effectively

This game is way better than it has any right to be. It clearly had a small budget but was made by a team that also clearly had a passion for the project. Play it on the hardest difficulty for a slightly "souls-like" experience which actually requires you to manage your limited resources and choose your fights wisely. Is it a AAA horror game no? Is it a unique horror with aspects rarely covered in horror? Yes. Is it terrifying? No. But neither are the AAA horrors are they? Does it get you with a few well timed jump scares? Of course! Overall this is a great game to pick up on sale and can be beaten in one or two sittings. Perfect for those of us with less time to play than we'd like.

I honestly have mixed feelings about this. While I enjoyed the journey at the end I was also kind of relieved it was over. First of all I really like the cult setting and the atmosphere this game gives off. Graphics look great too and performance is not an issue at all. Characters are honestly quite forgettable and the story has some weird parts, but is overall enjoyable. My biggest grime with this game is actually the combat. Maybe it's just me but the excessive combat just felt very off with this game. Maybe I was expecting a game that this is not? In my opinion the game would've been greater if there was less combat and more focus on the atmosphere. Sometimes it is very overwhelming if you have to fight multiple enemies, and if you die you get pulled out of the atmosphere. I think overall this game is a good and worth experience though. It is quite short but I think it is the correct length for what it offers. My recommendation is to play it on the easiest difficulty if you want to focus on the atmosphere and story rather than the gameplay.

I had a great time with this, and the free Gloom Below DLC campaign really rounded the whole experience out. I was not expecting to be wowed and ended up with a lot of affection for the characters, setting, systems, combat, and just the whole experience overall. I still can't believe how well the DLC worked for me; maybe if I'd struggled with it more it would have worn on me, but I ended up doing almost all of it in a single run after a couple early deaths.
