One of the best indie strategy games I've ever played. Insanely good world building and character writing. Game is harsh but making mistakes and learning to go with those mistakes is such a good part of the game. Kick started this game years ago and never regretted it

Just finished The Banner Saga Part 1. Gorgeous game. Incredible story. Choice and consequence at its peak. One of the best video games I have ever played. Absolutely broke my heart and I think I’m done playing video games for the rest of my life as a direct result. If you enjoy emotional turmoil you will love this game. Recommend.

The game is nice, not great, but nice. This is a game you'll play for the story (which is good), not for the game play (which is ok).

Interesting game. What it does well, it does very well: the art direction is amazing, music, ambiance as well as the meaningful story choices. I really felt my decisions had a real impact on the outcome of situation. On the other hand, the tactical aspect was very frustrating and counterintuitive. The idea was interesting, but having to keep weak ennemies around instead of finishing them off to optimize turns is stupid, there is a clear lack of space management (Varl units are too big to move at all after the 2nd round with all the ennemies you have to keep around, there is no terrain to break line of sight, set up ambushes or isolate ennemies). All maps are squares and that's it. I'll still recommand this game, but come for the story and choices, and don't expect much from the fighting. I would probably play BS2 and 3 when on sale to enjoy the good points listed though, at some point in time.

The Banner Saga 1 is the start of the Banner trilogy, and if you don't find any enjoyment out of it, it's not worth playing the rest of them. But I personally quite enjoyed the game. It's a very tactical game but has an overarching, greatly done story combined with music that really feels like they've gone in-depth for the lore building of the world, as everything just feels like it could be real, which is the best-case scenario for any fantasy-based story. The story starts off a little slow in the first game, but if you enjoy the gameplay, that's a small obstacle. This game is definitely worth trekking through to get further in the series.
