Oct. 2025
I bought the game on PS5 first, I played an infinite number of games and I play this game everyday. I bought it on Steam because I wanted to support the game's creator. As a veteran of tennis games since the 90s, after playing my first exhibition match my reaction was what kind of bs is this game??? Some time later... ...when I finally managed to configure the camera to my needs (Link to my Top Spin 4 style camera setup in TE4, in my profile.) ...when I turned off all those annoying on-screen assist indicators I am stunned and blown away by how good this game is. ***UPDATE 1*** The graphical and animation shortcomings cease to matter the moment you start playing, this is how great this game is. The possibilities of using mods...changing the resolution, disabling vsync and playing in 4k 120fps...on console are absolutely unprecedented. The absolute best tennis since Top Spin 4. ***UPDATE 2*** In three days I have spent over 15 hours in this game, a similar situation has not happened to me in the past 10 years...and the longer I play the more I want to play. I go so far as to say that this is the best tennis game ever made. This is a spiritual experience on the scale of a Eurosport match with the ability to control the players :) For reference and comparison, I played Top Spin 4 on an Xbox emulator for an hour, which had been my holy grail for years... and immediately felt discomfort and the lack of that decisive something. Better is the enemy of good, and in this case, without a doubt, the king is dead, long live the new king. ***UPDATE 3*** Almost 40 hours played and I haven't been a big gamer for a long time and I don't like spending too much time in video games. I play this like a maniac, I turn it on whenever I have a moment of peace and enjoy the gameplay...because all the elements of this game guarantee immediate satisfaction. In its category, nothing even comes close to this game, it's Expedition 33 in the category of tennis games. If you think that Top Spin or Tiebreak might be better...you're wrong ...I guarantee that after the first few games you will change your mind. ***Final UPDATE*** The game goes to my top 10 games of all time. It's the canon in the tennis game category, and should be the bible for future designers. Words and YT videos do not even begin to capture the genius of this game's design and playability. I play and will continue to play until TE5 eventually comes out. The author should teach design principles at a university and so- called big companies should learn from him. This is the only game, I'm an extreme fanatic of and I won't agree with any negative opinion about :)

It's early in the second set, against an opponent in the top 10 in the world. After a hard-fought first set win, I've just broken to go 2-0 up. I'm on course for the biggest win of my career... and they concede the match due to injury. I feel an emptiness, like something has just been stolen from me. I've won, but I haven't really won. I feel like this because a career in Tennis Elbow 4 can throw up such exciting and dramatic matches where it feels like every point matters, where you raise your game an extra level just to compete on an equal footing, where you think that if you can just get the ball back over the net each time, there's always a chance. It mixes these with the mismatches - the days when you just overpower your opponent to a comprehensive win, or the flipside where you're blown off the court by someone who appears to be superhuman. But you'll get to that level, if you keep plugging away, and the tight matches decided by the narrowest of margins can be found all along that path, milestones on the way to the top. Your first junior win. Your first appearance in a main draw. Your first Futures title, your first grand slam appearance, your first win over a top-10 adversary. Or not. It's the best tennis game there is because on the court, it grips like nothing else. With a full junior and pro career available, singles or doubles across the men's or women's game, there's a lot of meat here. Off the court, it's still a bit dry and could use some more in the way of reactions and news about what else is happening, something to make you feel part of the bigger tennis world, rather than just focused on your own development, match after match. But step onto the court, and you forget about that. The top-ten victory is coming, and you can feel it.

I can't remember a better use of $30 in my adult life. This game is life changing. It's so good man, I'm sad it isn't more popular. Legitimately one of the greatest sports games ever. Period.

I've played topspin 4, and at first glance it may seem like this isn't as good due to the slightly wonky animations. But this is by far the best tennis game on the market for a tennis purist - the gameplay mechanics make it so that you will have to focus on every single shot you play. Footwork actually really matters in this game unlike other games, and even on the easiest points you will still have to focus to ensure you can win the point instead of shanking the ball. And with the XKT mod, the depth with regards to players, licensed courts and the world tour is incomparable. By far the best tennis sim out there.

An outstanding tennis game with the must-have XKT mod. I'm an OG Super/Virtua/TopSpin player from the distant past, and thought I could scratch the old tennis itch with TopSpin 2K25. TopSpin looks great, and I don't hate it, but after 50+ hours of uninspiring gameplay that never felt like proper tennis, I decided to give TE4 a shot. I went from doubtful to completely addicted in a matter of hours. The gameplay feels like real, exciting, dynamic, no nonsense tennis . The AI players have their own distinct 'personalities'/playstyles and are a work of art. There are more comprehensive reviews already available here. I'm just adding to the pile. If you have doubts based on the graphics/animations, do yourself a favor --- Set them aside, dedicate a couple of hours to figuring out how TE4 works, and immerse yourself in a remarkable tennis experience where you end up holding real grudges against AI players, and startle your wife/cats when you finally face and beat the GOAT Novak Djokovic on Master difficulty with your own Pro.
