Team Sonic Racing is the successor to the great Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed; however, that doesn’t mean it’s a better game. In fact, I think it’s a downgrade in most aspects. As a kart racer, the driving gameplay is at least good. Turning and drifting are responsive and satisfying, rewarding you with boosts. However, there are no more vehicle transformations, only karts, which I understand, but it’s a bit sad to see them gone. One downgrade is the roster. There are no more characters from other SEGA games, only 15 characters from the Sonic franchise. The same applies to the tracks—they’re all based on Sonic games. At least the tracks and music are good. Still, it’s disappointing to see only Sonic characters this time. However, the biggest change—and one I wasn’t a fan of—was making the races team-based. There are 12 racers in 4 teams of 3, and the results are based on the team positions. That may work in online races with friends, but it’s just annoying in single-player. Even if you’re a good player, you’re still relying on your teammates’ AI not to drag you down, and that isn’t fun, especially when they’re often dumber than your rivals’ AI. That’s my main gripe with this game—this team-based approach isn’t much fun in single-player. And that’s most of the campaign, which is short and features an average story with poor presentation, reminding me of portable games. Other than that, there are single races, time trials, and online modes, but I didn’t try those. Also, you unlock customization parts with a random lootbox-style system, but fortunately, there is no monetization involved. Still, it makes me wonder if that was even considered. Anyway, I think this game is a disappointment, especially because it was released 7 years after the previous game, and it’s not as good or enjoyable. It feels rushed as well. But it’s not a bad game, and I can still recommend it on sale if you like the genre. Just lower your expectations a bit.

The game is fun with friends provided that you have some. The online in the beginning was plentiful and vast. But as time has passed and people dropped the game for newer titles. The online is sort of baren. Unless you have a dedicated group of friends/rivals/randoms banding together. It is hard to get a Ranked Match together. You need to go on Casual Races instead. The music in this game is solid and it is one of the last Crush 40 Works in a Sonic title as of late. Majority of their songs and remixes by Jun Senoue and others gives this game quite a longevity it needed. It holds its own decently compared to Sonic & All Stars Racing and Sonic & All Stars Racing Transformed. Just wish that the game kept getting updates from Sega/Sumo Digital. It needs a revival.

Team Sonic Racing is an attempt to replicate the success of All-Stars Racing Transformed. The game relies largely on the same ingredients as Transformed (without the "transform" mechanic, that is), and it's a lot of fun to play. It adds some teamplay mechanics into the mix (you can boost your teammates, they can boost you, you can transfer items, etc.) and these actually work surprisingly well; far from being gimmicky, you actually need to utilize the mechanics effectively to stay competitive (especially at higher difficulties). Difficulty in general is pretty well balanced; Hard seems impossible at first, but by the end of the game even Expert feels like a breeze. The challenge races (these focus on specific aspects like drifting) are a fun change of pace and range from easy to very difficult (but absolutely doable with practice). Some have complained about bad performance, but at least in 2024 the game seemed to run butter smooth (Ryzen 5 3600, 5700XT, 16GB RAM, Win 11). If I had to complain about something, it'd be the often too noticeable rubberbanding AI and the cringe story (told via text-based static cutscenes between missions), but then again the story is obviously meant for children. Also, don't forget to check the in-game guide; it has a lot of useful information about stuff like the various items you pick up.

I'm really sad this game was given no love from sega I love this game so much and was super hyped about it for a LONG while and they pretty much abandoned the game at launch. Its a simple kart racer you know em and i do but also has a super cool team aspect to it letting you use many different abilities to help out your teammates catch up to you. Quite a few really good tracks some returning from sega's older kart racers and honestly that's where the big problem is this game could have used a lot more locations and maps and honestly characters. Dlc or content updates would have really kept this game alive but sega just decided to kill it.
