Tales & Tactics stands out in the crowded auto-battler genre with its blend of strategic depth, fantasy elements, and light role-playing mechanics. If you’re a fan of auto-battlers but prefer a more relaxed experience without the pressure of timed decisions, this game could be your next favorite. The game offers a broad range of items, strategies, and combinations that promise hours of engaging gameplay. Its unique modes and diverse runs set it apart from other auto-battlers available on Steam. The variety in challengers and their distinct traits allow for tailored runs and strategic depth, ensuring that each playthrough feels fresh and exciting. One of the standout features of Tales & Tactics is its Challenger Draft, which lets you create your own challengers and build unique strategies from the start. This, combined with the game’s wide array of base and community-coded characters, contributes to its exceptional replayability. The Challenge Climb system adds another layer of complexity, providing more difficult runs and varied effects without disrupting the core experience. The game also includes a PvP mode reminiscent of Super Auto Pets, offering a new twist on the traditional auto-battler format. This mode, alongside the robust single-player experience, adds significant value and variety. While the gameplay is enjoyable and the combinations are fun, some might find the depth lacking compared to other titles in the genre. However, the charm of the world, the engaging GM dialogue, and the overall unique experience make it a worthwhile investment. In summary, Tales & Tactics offers a refined and distinctive take on the auto-battler genre. With its engaging gameplay, rich content, and replayability, it stands out as a top choice for fans of both single-player and multiplayer auto-battlers. If you’re looking for a game that combines strategic depth with a charming fantasy setting, this one is definitely worth a try. This review has been updated for the 1.0 launch! This is an auto-battling game where the majority point is to go on runs drafting units for your team that fight for you in combat scenarios. Along the way, you'll manage economy decisions, navigate non-hostile encounters, and manage the items your units hold to create the strongest team possible and win the grand tournament. It's like PvE Teamfight Tactics, in other words (though there is a PvP mode - more on that later). The Good: -The core gameplay loop overall is solid and robust, offering you lots to think about without flooding you with tons of reading (a problem I personally have with The Last Flame, by comparison) -Forming comps via clever shop navigation - alongside the combat/event/combat loop - all feels lively and fundamentally well put-together -As of 1.0, event variety and event impact both feel pretty great, too. It feels like you're getting meaty event choices frequently, which is important given that they're such a large part of the game -The combat animations (and general flow) are also nice and generally easy to follow, and the game has come a long way in terms of giving you access to the info you need -The last round of unit fine-tuning has really elevated lots of the consistently more boring units and tribes from the early access days, and in general, units on their own merits stick out much more than in the earlier days, which is a big plus The Bad: -While the general UX during a run is okay once you learn where everything is, there are still lots of bulky menus and cumbersome UI elements (the compendium in game is very nice, but also just kind of weirdly designed...not sure why there's no search bar) -The game has a meta-progression that's very poorly implemented, and in general, this can make the initial experience especially feel a bit hollow, because you unlock so much so quickly that it can feel overwhelming and deflating -While runs remain fun because of the general power fantasy on display regardless, even with 15 difficulty levels, it veers on too easy, especially after the first act. -While most tribes have standout units that make them playable, there are still a few stinker designs in there. In particular I don't love the tribals that require unit death (Demon, Skeleton), because fighting from behind becomes worse and worse as a run goes on. -in the PvP mode, you can more freely choose when your shop upgrades, while in PvE, the shop upgrades and forces upgraded unit-rarities in certain slots at specific junctures in the run, which feels a bit like a limiting factor that mostly just makes runs feel a bit samey --------- Other Thoughts: The meta-progression issue has bothered me since I first started playing the game, but it's about the same as it ever was. What I can say is that if you stick with the game - and particularly once you get up to that final difficulty and can draft characters every run - the initial onslaught of unlocks and clunky hidden hats menu end up feeling compelling. If anything, it's a testament to the strength of the gameplay that over time, this has come to bother me much less. The PvP is like Super Auto Pets/Backpack Battles in that you have infinite time to curate your board for a turn, then you're pitted against a random other opponent on the same turn curve as you. It has potential but also feels pretty sink or swim to me based on the strength of your opening. Personally, I come to this game for more of a chill time and haven't returned to it since it was first introduced, but it does certainly have an audience and is worth checking out at least as a curiosity. Despite plenty of rough edges - even after the 1.0 launch - there's a whole lot of good going on here, and this game probably represents the best of the single-player auto-battlers I've played on Steam thusfar. So, if "single player TFT" floats your boat as a concept at all, I think this one's worth checking out!

A slick, refined and consistently fun auto battler roguelike. It's been an absolute pleasure playing this game in EA and I'm super proud of the devs for getting it to this point. While a few roguelike autobattlers are available on steam now Tales & Tactics stands above the rest for its unique modes of play and wonderfully diverse runs. Your challenger selection has strong influence on how you tailor your runs, which unit traits you go for and how your final board will look. Every unit has key strengths and want specific things from items and team compositions to shine. Traits differ wildly and rarely give direct stat buffs, instead giving unique bonus effects that give you more to build around. There are 9 base challengers each with unique targeted win conditions and strengths in teambuilding, as well as 6 more community coded characters with unique perks and the Challenger Draft feature, drawing on the pool of all challenger perks to allow you to create your own at the beginning of a run. With such a large variety of approaches that are impactful from your first combat to the end of a run the replayability of Tales & Tactics is a massive step above other games in the genre. T&T also features a Slay the Spire like ascension system in the Challenge Climb, allowing for more difficult runs without disrupting the core game experience. Most of these challenge climb effects are interesting beyond just straight nerfs to your runs or buffs to the enemies, adding more effects for you to build around and consider in preparing for combats and adding or removing certain aspects of runs that create even more variance and replayability. T&T also has a Super Auto Pets like PvP mode in which you pick from a preset starting lineup and PvP exclusive challengers to play the base game with a completely new approach. I've loved pretty much every roguelike autobattler I've played and would recommend most of them to people but if I had to pick one Tales & Tactics is the obvious choice, nothing else in the genre matches its level of refinement, has its level of replayability and variance in modes, run feel and build viability.

After 83 hours and all the achievements, I can safely say this game is a fantastic auto-battler! The new PvP works alright, but the gem is the single-player. Combined with the right items, any comp can work. Works fine on desktop Linux via Proton. I can safely say that recent changes made Challenge Climb 11-15 much more bearable. After 1.0, I may write a guide. Two thumbs, eight fingers, and a big toe way up!
