Honestly a really fun game! To me, the only problem with it is how short it can feel after an initial play through, their environmental storytelling sometimes is off the charts! With the big bad looming in the distance, plus combat is still viable regardless of what outfit you pick, it's all down to play style. And I think that's really neat.

I recommend this game... but I also do not like this game... more on this at the bottom. Ridiculously difficult. I played on normal, thinking that would be ample... but this game is really hard. Like, fresh out the gates you have to do a duel with your brother, this duel is very easy. So what's the problem? After that duel, you get into a fight you have to lose. Fair enough, games do this a lot for the plot. But after that, you have no armour and have to do a whole bunch of battles with the odds massively stacked against you. Far as I can tell there's no levelling system, so if you expect to be able to grind your way up to doing the fights, you're sod out of luck I'm afraid. It's possible that I didn't get far enough into the game for it to become more doable. But I just couldn't beat a battle against a ranged enemy and a melee one. Having to block ranged attacks, but also having to deal with the one up close and personal is just too much for me. Sorry dev, you were friendly on twitter, but I just didn't get on with your game I'm afraid. As for my non difficulty related issues. To go borderless windowed you need an additional program that I recommend you download anyway called "Borderless Windowed Gaming". The game by default is full screen, if you want it non full screen, it will not be borderless. The program is great for games that don't do borderless. This game does not, very unfortunate. The dialogue is bewildering, it involves lot's of whistly noises and pictures, sometimes it's a hit or a miss whether or not you'll understand someone. I'm not sure if this is supposed to be a puzzle, or just a quirky idea at dialogue. It's amusing, but a subtitle option would be nice for a translation of what they're saying. I'm bad at pictionary. The graphics are adorable, it's a shame the plushy didn't sell (Damn you makeship!) because that plushy is how I found out about this game. Even not having tried this game before, I had to get that plushy... Unfortunately, no. So buy the game, get those sales numbers up, and maybe the plushy will sell if the dev tries again. (Alternatively, find a better way to sell a plushy) There's tonnes of little details in the background to look at and love as well as unique appearances for equipable items. Of course I'm choosing the spatula! Finally we come to the point at the start. I am critical of the game, I did not enjoy my time playing. I found it too difficult to get very far. Maybe I am just bad at this type of game, the combat felt like there were just too many buttons to remember all at once. I didn't expect the game to start off hard, most games ease you into hard. But I know fine well that a lot of people love games that start off hard. So for those people, I recommend this game. You're going to love it, you'll hate frogs, but you'll like this game. But if you're anything like me, the type of person who primarily dodges in games because blocking requires more work, then this game is not for you. For this game, you need to know to block and to dodge, you cannot be really good at one or the other, you have to be somewhat good at them both. So for me, I had a bad time trying to do the combat. I know I didn't give it long, but I hate games where I die frequently fresh out the gate. With Dark Souls, you can get through quite a lot of the game before it starts to give you trouble. You can feasibly get through the game without having to parry once. If ever it's hard, you can grind levels. But this game? Those aren't options. You have to block as well, you have to rely on your gear, you cannot just out level the content. If you buy the game, I hope you enjoy it more than I did. If my review made you choose not to buy the game, I hope you find something more fitting for you. Regardless, I recommend looking up a playthrough, the game truly is adorable... Even the pictionary. Much love, thank you for reading.

The game is good, but it's not a metroidvania. It's more of a 2D souls-like. The first battles are hard and frustrating, but once you get used to the pace of combat and to how the defences, rolls and windows of opportunity for attack work, you can go all the way to the end boss with no issues. There is one aspect that I didn't like: holy backtracking Batman, you spend so much time walking back from the boss fight to the starting point, just to discover another quest that makes you go back AGAIN. I recommend the game still. It's not perfect (and it could use some better support for 32:9 ultrawide as well), but the combat is solid, the art style is great, the music and sounds effect are very on point, the story is nothing special but it's entertaining and keeps you going. I have 15h with the game, half of it was for the main story, and the other half was completing side content.

Alright. Tails of Iron and its end game expansion, Bright Fir Forest are done and dusted. This game isn’t fully a Metroidvania nor is it fully a Soulsborne game, but it’s definitely got elements of both. The game it most reminds me of is Hollow Knight, but HK is of course a far more vast game and a true Soulsborne and Metroidvania. You play as the newly annointed Rat King, Redgi (Reggie), who just watched his father, the former king, be slain by the ‘Pondscum’, an army of frogs that have been your kingdom’s primary enemies for ages. The frogs, after slaying the king and knocking you unconscious, proceeded to rampage through the kingdom killing and enslaving the Rat People. So, you are tasked with re-establishing your kingdom, rescuing your captured brothers, freeing your people, and exacting revenge on the Pondscum so they’ll never dare attack your kingdom again. This is a 2.5D side scrolling adventure with what I’d describe as exceptional, evocative, and vibrant graphics. This, even at its grimiest, is a beautiful looking game. Most of the voice tracks are basically squeaks and growls and such, representing the languages spoken by the anthropomorphic animals. However, Doug Cockle is the narrator, which was really cool. The devs even included some nods to Doug’s most famous character, which was fun and neat. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3143090480 So….the combat is dodge, roll, and parry as you’d expect from a Soulsborne inspired game, and there is an encumbrance system as well. You have six categories of gear: one handed weapons, two handed weapons, ranged weapons, helmets, armor, and shields. You will be constantly swapping out gear as you’ll also always be finding new gear. While of course trying to dial in your encumbrance so you’re not fat dodging (at least the way I play, lol). The combat was the highlight of the game for me. Really tight and responsive controls with good variety. It kinda has a boss rush feel to it as well. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3142526966 There is what equates to an Estus flask, only rather than numbered uses, it just drains your flask equal to the health you regain. Having the chef (one of your brothers) cook you unique meals which you’ll find ingredients for, will raise your health. There are four of these meals in the game. You also will gain poison flasks, which function as limited use weapon buffs. And of course, your consumables are rounded out with ammo for your ranged weapons. The game’s various maps and dungeons are where the Metroidvania aspects show themselves, including copious backtracking (unfortunately). This is one aspect of the game that grew cumbersome. Because, you also have a lot of side quests that require you to revisit areas over and over. Some, like the Arena fights, were very cool. Others, mostly of the monster hunting or rescue variety, got pretty boring. I'll also note that some different areas introduced the Mole society, hints at a Turtle society, and the expansion introduces the Squirrel society. I thought both were nice additions to the game that helped really flesh out this world the devs crafted. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3143136718 I played on the Steam Deck. It was fully compatible and well suited for the handheld. On default settings, I was getting almost four hours of battery life and 60 FPS routinely. And, zero technical issues. All told, it took me 6.8 hours to complete the main story, which was fun, and about 45 minutes to finish the endgame expansion (which was a nice cap on the game), with the remaining time spent wrapping up the side quests I was still interested in as well as the endgame unlocked Arena in your kingdom. It was, despite some of its more boring aspects, a really fun and moderately challenging game. I enjoyed my time with it. I’d say cost vs value is easily there, but given the relatively shorter run time as well as there being no real replayability outside of trying different difficulty levels, I’d still recommend buying on sale. I'm a bit mixed on this one. On one hand, I love the artstyle, the story, the naration. It's just very.. redwall. I don't mind the repeating quests and the backtracking. The main problem here is the combat system. I've played a lot of souls games. When you get killed, it's usually "fair". Here that's not quite the case: * The knockback attacks can be very bullshit. No windup, they knock you back, and then hit you multiple times when you're down. You need to know when a boss can do knockback, and avoid those situations entirely. The final bosses second phase is especially bullshit in phase 2. * The hitboxes can be quite inconsistent * Some attacks are just very hard/impossible to block if you're badly positioned * The lack of i-framing does hurt here To beat some bosses, you have to "play" their AI. Invite certain attacks, position yourself so other attack types are rarer. This is just.. tedious. This might be coloured by me playing on the highest difficulty. Everything is beatable, sometimes it just takes a long time. I suspect higher difficulty levels just magnify the issues the combat system has. The game is fun. The expansion bosses feel fairer. I hope they fix the issues in part 2.
