When I started playing I thought of refunding the game. I expected it to play like Final Fantasy Tactics and it doesn't. Once you get over that expectation the game has a lot to offer which it does better than Final Fantasy Tactics and I am really enjoying the game now. One of the biggest problems with this game is that it does a very poor job of explaining the underlying game mechanics to you of how attack and defence works and so you feel that for example Archers are trash because they only do 1 damage and noting in the game explains to you why this happens and how to overcome enemy defences. I had to watch literal hours of YouTube videos by Coffee Potato to explain the mechanics to me, and only once I understood it did I begin to enjoy the game. This game is hard and offers a lot more puzzle solving than games like FFT. A lot of decisions are made before combat even begins as to which units you want to take and how you want to solve the puzzle of the battle presented to you. I had a number of battles where I tried one approach only to fail, but I learnt how the map plays as a result and brought different units and took a different approach and won easily. The game has a beautifal tactical depth when you understand what each unit's role is (which meant even more long Youtube videos by Coffee Potato) and enemy behavour and the role of the terrain. In Chapter three the game became a little bit grindy, I was constantly short on money and consumables and I had to grind quite a bit for money to get to a good spot. This might be due to an error of me relying too much on consumables, but again the game did not teach me otherwise. I am using clerics a lot more now along with equipment that breaches enemies defences which means I need to rely on items less and that has certainly helped my in game wallet, but this is another example of how the game feels very punishing if you don't play it in a way that takes advantage of your classes correctly. This game is definately worth playing if you are willing to take the time to overcome the obstacles in learning the game's mechanics, and now I think I enjoy it much more than FFT where it was far too easy to build completely overpowered units by the end-game, whereas with this game I need to keep thinking and using my units optimally to succeed.

A gorgeous game with an interesting political narrative and fun gameplay. I never played the original, even if I remember it; therefore, I cannot really speak to the quality of Tactics Ogre Reborn in comparison to it, but as its own game, I found it fantastic. From what I understand, Tactics Ogre served as inspiration for the (much more widely known) Final Fantasy Tactics, both visions of Yasumi Matsuno, and it shows. The story, in particular is very remindful of the political intrigues and coups of the later, something I found quite appealing. This one, however, is quite adamant on not allowing you to steamroll your way through the game. There is a level cap that increases every few battles, so grinding your problems out is not always possible. That and the fact that Tactics Ogre Reborn frequently pit you against overleved enemies in greater numbers than yours means you might get frustrated on the more difficult battles. Thankfully, most of them allow you to win by taking out the enemy leader, and the level cap means you won't be missing much in the way of experience by doing just that. There is also a card system (new to Reborn). It consists of buff cards that appear on the map randomly, and each character, friend or enemy, can collect up to four. You can knock enemies into them (there are "remove buffs" cards), block them from the enemy and so on. I didn't pay much attention to these at first, but turns out stacking them is a HUGE advantage to you. Figuring this out made the game much easier during the harder battles. There are three branching paths, and Tactics Ogre makes them that much more interesting by not only changing your choices and alignment, but by drastically changing the behavior of supporting characters as well. The story varies drastically during the beginning chapters, but by chapter 4 everything will be quite similar again. What it does change, however, is which characters you can recruit, something you might wish to plan ahead for if you don't mind spoilers. The game does let you rewind time after finishing it, though, so you won't have to worry about it too much. In fact, you might wish to have characters from all 3 timelines for the final epilogue chapters, which are pretty hard. The graphics are gorgeous. Reborn veered away from the HD pixel graphics of Octopath Traveler and the like, and I loved the way it looks. The maps and characters retain that feeling of small contained dioramas with dolls, and the portraits by Akihiko Yoshida are nothing short of beautiful. Tactics Ogre Reborn is an amazing game, because Tactics Ogre is an amazing game. It does show its age in places, and some battles and lengthy dungeons can be frustrating, but I had a blast with it. I wager that if you enjoy tactical RPGs at all, you will too.

I played the game for 838 hours. What do you know about grinding boy!? I believe this is the only game I played for hundreds of hours after 100% achievements. There is simply so many miss-ables, so many items, battles, conversations, choices. This is the most complicated and interesting games a person can play with one hand while drinking a coffee/beer. An absolute must have for fans of turn-based and tactical strategy games. This is the great-granddaddy of them all.

WOW!! Just finished the main story. This is an amazing game. If you like Final Fantasy and/or XCOM style turn based grid-strategy games: this is THE game for you. You will be hard pressed to find a better offering in terms of gameplay, story, and progression. This is one of the best JRPG's I have played, and hands down the best tactical RPG I have played. The gameplay is deceptively simple and builds in complexity over the course of the game. You start out with three characters moving and making attacks; before long you will be able to recruit enemies mid battle, perform special weapon attacks, and grow your party in size and variation. The amount of customisation is insane. There are so many classes and they are all amazing. Similarly, every class has a lot of different skills you can swap out as you go, and when you add weapons and gear to the mix - you wind up with a very personal experience in which you really are the MASTER of the game's many mechanics and classes. The story is very good. It isn't what it seems. Dark, messed up stuff will happen to all these chibi-sized characters. The decision making is not obvious: no mass effect wheel to give you an idea of how your choices affect the story. As such, many of the games actual characters may leave your party, die in battle (yes, you can lose plot characters in battle), die in storyline, be killed by you, or never join your party in the first place due to your decisions. I played the game blind, and as such ended the game with about 3 of the 20+ plot characters not in my party. Progression/Punishment is done very tastefully. You have three turns to revive a dead party member, and if you can't get to them with a revive stone, they die FOR GOOD. I lost about 3 characters in my play through, but that is because I was playing extremely carefully. One of them, however, was a plot character whose survival could have altered the story! On the flip side, you can recruit enemies in battle, so when you see a new enemy type who is really destroying your team, you can run up to them and get them on your side. This goes for monsters too. If you are reading reviews, that means your tastes already align with this game. Buy it. It took me a year to beat, and now there is a 100-story end-game dungeon for me to conquer if I want to keep playing. This is my first STEAM review: that is how much I recommend this game :)

As a die hard FF Tactics fan I somehow never played this. This really is just like FFT, but with a different sort of balance and a bit more complex. Love it. Only complaint is the level cap and inability to make money. This is also not a great game for beginners in tactics game or gaming in general for that matter; it is very dense and there are super very difficult battles. Lastly, i did get it on sale, I think the price tags on these remasters is outrageous, but maybe thats just me.
