The solo mode is well-polished. The game gained visual clutter, which you can get used to with time, and cut a bunch of the game mechanics chaff that you had in the first game, including useless items and the pointless recycling boosts (why does this item exist if you're supposed to sell it?) Class 'items' are now fixed to initial loadout, and the upgrade system is significantly more interesting than increasing a stat value. In the current version (U20), the Co-Op mode works amazingly if it works, but the game does not robustly recover from network issues in its peer-to-peer networking implementation at all. If your connection to your teammates has any issues whatsoever, you will currently experience softlocks at times. Enemy hits seem to register on the host of the lobby only, which means that if your ping is horrible, you will run behind cover and get chunked for 1k damage by a sniper anyway if the connection has high latency. The main menu UI is also extremely buggy especially in regards to network lobbies. Network lobbies don't even have the most basic of features like kicking/banning players. Chat breaks frequently. I still can't figure out how to read latency to other players. The meme in S1 was that you would lose your looped run to the eventual GameMaker engine crash, and now you're more likely to lose the run because you lose a single network packet. If you're not willing to put up with the networking jank at this time and specifically want to do Co-Op, don't play it right now. Solo mode is quite excellent, however.
Sseth made a video, pirated the game, played for 20 hours, bought it Great game, a lot of stuff is happening after some time, so your typical roguelike where the limit is how many slides per second your computer can survive with your broken build. to memorise a moment from my gameplay: "you attacked yourself for 2000 (explosion, critical)". good run. After playing some more, there is also some critique to be given. something is wrong with shop generation, as I pretty much never find any upgrade stations after the first few levels, so I'd be like a rich man driving around a YUGO and shooting a water squirt gun at a tank there aren't that many mods if you want to make the game more tailored to your expectations - and the mod maker is confusing. every time I tried doing a copy and edit of a "set base" of something, my game was crashing, which now caused me to lose my save file. Overall, if you just play without trying to make mods, and aren't as unlucky as I was, it's still a great roguelike! And, excluding trying to change the base values, in my 50 hours of gameplay (crack ver included), I never crashed! after few hours opening the minimap makes the game stutter a bit, but it isn't much of an issue.
Honestly, after clearing the first end boss, this game might even be better than the first one. I know there are still many bugs (especially UI-related ones), but the core gameplay — which was already proven in the first game — goes exceptionally hard in this one. The guns sound orgasmic, and the hit feedback feels meaty and devastating. There is also much room for experimenting with characters and starting loadouts. I played it co-op with a friend, which might actually be how this game is intended to be experienced. Normally, I don’t hand out positive reviews for Early Access titles, but I just can’t get over how strong this foundation already is. For the devs: Fixing the QoL features would very likely push this game to an “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating on Steam. Just add more variety and let players go crazy — even crazier guns and gadgets. I would also love to see some secrets to uncover, like secret stages, characters, or alternative ways to progress to a different end boss, similar to Risk of Rain or The Binding of Isaac. So far, this game absolutely delivers. If you’re considering buying it, I would definitely give it a go. I hope the developers keep working on it so I can recommend it to even more people! <3
