This game was definitely disturbing. I'm still in shock after finishing it because what the actual fuck. Deadass felt like I was gonna throw up. Writing was amazing and kept me engaged all throughout. It being a kinetic VN was no issue at all and I actually prefer it that way. This game totally knocked it out of the park. I loved the darker themes, the banter between characters, and the fact Robin is such a fucking doormat. Like good god man, could you be any less of a piece of shit? I love how he was written. His guilt yet lack of true care towards his family as he elopes with some young girl was not only awful in it's own right, but the way he consistently makes horrible decisions makes you feel a whole load of things towards him as a character. Pity, anger, disappointment, disgust, sometimes even guilt on his behalf. The writing for Sally was also great. The way she was written really showed how much she hates him, but also how she still has a soft spot and still truly loves him. It also built contempt for her very quickly and showed why Robin hates her. I hated her from the start but felt worse and worse for that as the plot continued. Soon, all I could feel was pity for her. The setup for the story was good, nothing felt too repetitive to read and soon I was pretty hooked on the plot and excited for more. There's fanservice, and it was pretty good both art and writing wise. Robin's unfaithful behavior and enabling his increasingly toxic side relationship was surprisingly fun to watch unfold and it only made the fanservice better, especially as the writing made things feel more and more risky. Buy the game. Indulge in it. It's worth it.

Well written! Quite enjoyed the writer's prose; far stronger and smoother than others in this space. The plot and characters had surprising depth given the novel's relatively short runtime!

Honey there is a weird cat outside, Although I think calling this cat weird is taking everything too lightly. Though Sweetest Monster is a short 2ish hour kinetic novel, it delivers on its intended goal really nicely. The whole novel was meant to potray the main character as a typical weak willed anime protagonist where the world advances onto him without him ever trying, although the twist subverts the usual trope and really hits hard. I loved the character dynamics in this novel, and especially loved how they felt and acted more real and true to how their character traits are supposed to be, instead of the usual convenient anime protag turning into a completely new person when the plot calls for it. The musical selection was fantastic and really fit the dark and dreary color scheme and theme of the novel. I fully recommend picking Sweetest Monster up even at full price simply because of how well portrayed the story is.

One of the best but also one of the most disturbing games I've ever played. It's a deconstruction of several Visual Novel tropes, and a very good one at that: What could be considered "fan service" in other games feels uncomfortable instead of arousing in Sweetest Monster. There are no choices here and though it comes down to preference, I think the game works better without them. I highly advise going into Sweetest Monster as blind as possible, although some might want to look up trigger warnings first since there certainly are a lot of them. Notably, the game does have a sequel. It's called Sweetest Monster Refrain, and it's unfortunately not available on Steam. If you enjoyed the first one, I recommend playing the sequel as well. It starts of extremely slow but picks up the pace about one third in, and then it just keeps getting better and better. It's a shame that Valve didn't allow the game on Steam when so many much more explicit games are advertised on the platform.
