Swarm Grinder is a new take on the Vampire Survivors formula. Nice concept but way too grindy, even with "grinder" in its name. The game is tiny, has just 3 maps, only has 3 playable characters and a total of 14 skills with variations. Feels like nothing in comparison to massive games like "Vampire Survivors" or the FREE "Holocure"... Heck, even "20 Minutes Till Dawn", "Scarlet Tower" and "Bio Prototype" are chunkier and offer more. I did not like the game at first and only played it while watching something else. After grinding through the first challenges to unlock item slots and perks, the game finally ramped up. There are very few builds and most of them are already meta, not much experimenting here. To be honest, nothing special. Not bad, but nothing noteworthy... Only for fans of the genre who want to mix it up a little. Better go play HOLOCURE, it is free, has lots of characters with unique playstyles, tons of progression as well as dozens of mini-games. The devs should have put more effort into this project, it could have been something, not just a glorified abandoned demo..

While Swarm Grinder is a little starved for content - especially when compared to its competitors (only 3 characters/3 stages) it remains deceptively fun. It struggles with frame drops at higher difficulties even on a high end PC (i7 13700k/4070 Ti/32 Gb DDR5 RAM) but it isn't unplayable or game breaking in any way. I should note that I picked this up during the current sale at 50% off - but for the time I've gotten out already, I'd definitely say I've gotten my monies worth. The OST thankfully is pretty solid, as stated earlier there's only 3 stages so you'll be hearing those same songs a lot. All in all its a competent survivors-like and definitely worth the cost of admission when priced at 50% off or lower. TLDR: Aside from some small perfomance issues, and a lack of content - Swarm Grinder is surprisingly fun! 7.5/10 would recommend to most fans of the genre

Gorgeous little game. In all aspects: - It looks gorgeous! - The design is incredibly tight and pulled off very well. The game will force you to spawn your own enemies to farm them for ammo, but always try to fall back and manage them before next push. - Different mechs and weapons styles play very uniquely, and within each there is space enough for a plenty of interesting builds, too. While most of those will use the weapons said mech specialises in, you can pull off some really crazy combos too! - Unlike some other games, every upgrade has a place in a build. Even the support skills play bigger role than usually, since they also follow the push-pull mantra of the game, and the more weapons you get, the more enemies you have to kill to fuel them. Support skills can balance it out and give you a breather. - The upgrade trees for all the skills feel absolutely brilliant. There will be "+50% DMG" upgrades here and there, but a lot of upgrades feel very unique and offer a meaningful choice. The final upgrades in each tree are absolutely massive and more often than not will be what you imagine your builds around. - Finding the upgrades you want is exactly easy/hard enough. If you seek to find and max out one skill, it's very easy. If you want to find exact 5 you need... that might take a few runs. Most of the time you settle into focusing into 2-3 skills you NEED, 1 you WANT and leave 1 or 2 spaces for whatever comes your way when those do not drop. And it feels glorious! - The progression system between the 3 mechs is simple yet fun. There is nothing super special about it, but it provides a feeling of guidance and provides goals to a genre that can feel very goal-less at times. And now for the bad things: - Some gadgets are "eh" at best. Worse yet, there isn't more of them. - Some balancing feels off, especially for ultimates. Worse, there ain't more of them. - Non that there are too few, I just want more. - There isn't more of this game. - No, for real, I want more.

(+) Great roguelite elements Love the different skills and how they are implemented in the game Great idea with the "honeycombs". The game makes the player generate more enemies by deleting the honeycombs. So you may choose to take it slow and face enemies one by one, or you may dive into the combs and spawn more enemies into the battle field. Power up towers are a great addition (-) Not a huge fan of the colour palette, it becomes kinda hard to tell the earlier enemies apart from the background since they are almost the same colour. For me sessions take too long for an average roguelite adventure. I could say the game has a slow build up process.
