If you're wondering at the the positive reviews combined with low playtime hours, it's because the majority of players are hanging out on the Forged Alliance Forever Forever (FAF) modded community servers, which have continued to keep the performance and gameplay relevant decades later. The base game is decent, a campaign probably worth doing once, and has some innovative ideas... but you can do all that and more on FAF, with modern improvements, and optional coop. A mod that's not only better but has a greater playerbase than the base game, AND active development, AND isn't fractured into a dozen splinter projects... is highly unusual, to say the least. As far as competiveness goes, it's one of the few games that I enjoy more often than not even when losing. There are a variety of hail mary tactics that let you bow out of a match early while (probably) helping the team, and people frequently spectate after dying to enjoy the show or even help out by analyzing the ongoing battle. There's a reason there are multiple youtube channels, to this day, that feature weekly if not daily casts of FAF games. If you watch any of those videos, some of the things that make FAF special will become obvious very quickly. I've also enjoyed Starcraft II casts, but despite the impressive (and flashy) micro skills shown, it doesn't compare to the tactical variety or strategic depth of FAF. I'd like to go on, but I won't bore you with walls of text. If you are still on the fence, watch a replay. Just bear in mind that most people aren't pros - the player base is large enough to accommodate regular joes and noobs, especially on weekends.

It's shocking how to this day a better RTS is yet to be made. The units in this game aren't just blobs of DPS and health, each unit for each faction (and there are 4 factions!) is entirely unique, with different upsides and downsides. Aside from the basics that you learn pretty quickly, the way you play each game differs so much that it feels like every match leaves a distinct memory of what went down, something to remember for a while! There are even entire Youtube channels dedicated to casting games! Look up "Forged Alliance Forever", download and and join the matchmaking. Don't worry about being "bad", that's exactly what matchmaking is for - it will put you in fair matches after a few games and you'll start winning and growing in skill :) By far the worst thing about this game is, sadly, the way its networking works. It was made back when transmitting the positions and current states of thousands of units over the internet was impossible for many, so it uses deterministic lockstep. A single person lagging causes the entire game to lag, and a single connection breaking between any two players will cause the match to break until one of them leaves.

It's still a very enjoyable RTS game. Perhaps one of the best out there! It has a great gaming community, keeping the game alife. This expansion improves significally on the original. Graphics are the same, but the gameplay is way better. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3143361745 https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3142724588

This game is the epitome of Macroscale RTS games. Since its release, there has been none other like this and there may never be another one. The game just oozes class and passion of the developers, clearly evident in the units and their designs. To me, this is the ultimate macro strategy game. The map sizes are huge, by huge I mean 81 KM x 81 KM in size. The sheer scale of the battles, the stratas being used, with recon fighters up top, followed by air superiority fighters, bombers, torpedo bombers, land and naval units, submerged units to giant mechs walking the ocean floor, it truly is an amazing sigh to see it all unfold. I also love how intelligence is vital, using radars, sonar and omni and then using counter intelligence to hide your units, truly insane. I can't recommend this game enough. One more thing, get the following mods: 1.) FAF: For multiplayer matches and general QOL improvements. A really good MOD which allows PVP as well as really good QOL improvements. 2.) LOUD project: My personal favourite as the entire core files of the game have been reworked, vastly improving the AI and allowing the game to finally run in excess of 40,000 units at once without any late game slowdown, enabling large scale epic warfare in the largest maps. The AI uses tactics well and changes them according to the situation. It turns each battle into a large strategic war where using integrated warfare tactics become essential. As an RTS fan, this game is the best in the macro scale. Nothing else even comes close. 10/10.
