This is a bit of a weird game to recommend, since it’s almost completely dead save for a handful of Brazilian players with cracked copies of the game. That being said, this is one of the best party games you can find on Steam. The combat is very dynamic, with a sort of rock-paper-scissors balance between jumping attacks, blocking, and grabs. Nothing feels too spammy, and the skill ceiling is surprisingly high. The campaign and challenges were never my favorite part of the game, but they are there, and they’re a fun way to improve your skills and to get nostalgia for the original Flash version. However, I’m glossing over the best aspect: the map editor. This little abandoned fighting game somehow manages to have the best map editor I have EVER seen in a video game. There’s many layers of customization, full support for C# scripting, a system of Triggers and other map elements that work without coding at all, and even a system of MapNodes to add bot support to any map you create! Plus, there's a widget in the editor that allows a quick-and-dirty way to publish maps to the Steam Workshop for other people to download. In short, it rocks, and it’s one of Superfighters Deluxe’s best features. I have over 500 hours in this game, and 70% of that time was just spent screwing around in the map editor and making silly maps to play with friends. To some, 10 bucks per person might be a bit steep for a multiplayer game with almost no active players, and that’s fair, but if you can find friends that are willing to join, I guarantee it’ll be worth it.

A modern take on the classic Superfighters flash game. While the difficulty spike might aswell be is vertical and a many elements are reliant on RNG, even playing with just a few Easy/Normal bots offline can be fun once you get the hang of basic game mechanics & controls. Stay away from the "Challenges" tab unless you're a masochist.

The flash version of this game was basically the Smash Bros of my childhood. Anytime I had access to a PC with an internet connection and a few friends around, I'd jump at the chance to play it. So you can imagine my surprise when, years later, I stumbled upon an improved version of the game on Steam. Of course, I instantly bought it and gave it a try. It was just as fun as I remembered, but with a few exceptions. First off, the game has become much more complex and deeper than before. There are now features like weapon slots, reloading, blocking, kicking, grabbing and more. In terms of controls, almost every button on the controller is now utilized, but they don't feel as intuitive and fun to use. Back in the day, all you needed were four directional buttons and four action buttons. I understand the appeal of adding new mechanics and improving on old ones, but one of the things I loved most about the Flash version was its accessibility and ease of understanding. Almost all my friends could pick up and grasp the mechanics within the first two rounds. In this new version, however, you really need to complete the tutorial first, and even after that, it's easy to forget all the controls if you haven’t played for a while. Secondly, there are some technical issues. It might be unfair to criticize the game for not supporting the Steam Deck (especially since support for the game ended long before the Steam Deck was available), but it would have greatly benefited this kind of game. I tried every solution available online to make it work, but to no avail. A more important issue I encountered was the inability to connect two controllers for local play - both were registering as one controller. Maybe it’s something to do with my controllers, but again, I tried nearly every solution possible, and none worked. The only solution was to buy another copy and play online with my friend. To be fair, that worked really well, and there are still plenty of players online today. But you can see how this isn't the ideal solution for someone who loved the game for being simple, easy-to-set-up couch co-op fun. But now, let me tell you why I went through all this trouble to make the game work. For me, this game is the closest thing you can get to a John Woo movie, compressed into a pixelated fighting game. Players can grab and kick each other in mid-air, knock out weapons, throw them, pick up and use props, take cover, and leap from rooftops in true Max Payne style (with slow-mo, of course). The amount of physics interaction in each level is insane. You can be blown up, smashed or set on fire - pretty much everything in the level can affect the fight. All these systems interact to create incredibly cinematic, spectacular battles. And this version adds so much new content: different modes, new weapons, tons of new levels, online play, a level editor, Workshop support, and more. Yes, the game has its problems: the UI/UX is quite small and unwieldy imo, making it hard to find what you're looking for. There's also the aforementioned gamepad connectivity issue (for me atleast). And i can definitely see how the graphics might be unappealing to some (i really enjoy them tho). But if you're REALLY into good couch co-op fighters, it would be a crime not to give this game a try. I've played many different games in this genre, and despite its flaws, this one is definitely among the best.

When I was in school, I would play the original Flash version of this game everyday on the school computers with my friends. Then we discovered the developers had created a full and actual version of the game. It didn't disappoint, it never did. Doesn't matter how dead the severs are, if you have at least 1 friend to 1v1 against, this game will last a lifetime.
