As a guy who grew up in the heyday of Flash Games when I figured out that Super Motherload not only exists, but was also on sale I bought it on the spot, and I am generally very happy with my purchase. As a note, I will only be talking about Super Motherload; however, the game also includes the option to play the original Motherload Goldium. I did play it briefly but stopped when I realized how much work those nostalgia goggles were doing and how garbage the original game actually was. I am glad that it is included though, that is a nice feature for anyone who wants the original Motherload experience. Super Motherloadās core experience revolves around drilling through the planet Mars to gather valuable resources. You can only drill left, right, or down, but you can fly up and everything (but you and the final boss). And then there is the inclusion of explosives to clear rocks, magma, or just clear up large amounts of space. It is very simple, donāt damage your driller too much, donāt run out of fuel if you can avoid it, drill, fly back up, and make plenty of money to get upgrades so you can dig even lower, rinse and repeat. I was surprised by how addicted I was to the core gameplay loop and was not expecting to put in over 16 hours into the game and go for all the achievements. It is all really simple but there is a lot of fun to be had: digging puzzles to solve, routes to plan to safely traverse the terrain or combine minerals, resources to manage, and upgrade decisions to be made. It is not perfect by any means. One of the things that I did not realize until way later in the game is how much the characters vary, which became really important for my hardcore run. That should have been clarified along with many other things, I donāt like hand holding but a little tip at the top of the screen, a better breakdown of the characters, or a full panel of stats would have been nice especially because I only played solo, so there was no need to have the character selections available for the other players. And as a bit of an aside I was surprised this game had split-screen at all, after I finished the game I grabbed a spare controller and dorked with it a bit and the game is already fairly claustrophobic (and not in a fun way), but with a second player who may impede your movement, it is even claustrophobic. And what is even crazier is that you can have up to 4 people on the same screen. I already felt like you exhausted the resources pretty quickly, but four people all fighting for resources and stopping you from combining metals and gems together to get you even less of it sounds like cancer. This is combined with the fact that the movement feels rigid overall, and as a solo player it is not too bad, but having miners all pulling the screen away from you it becomes even more rigid. Bringing it back to the core gameplay I found the smelting feature to be brilliant as an upgrade over the original, it makes you consider the order in which you will mine resources which forces you to route plan more. Overall, the core of this game is great (as long as you are playing solo), but there are a few things that really annoy me. For example, you can damage yourself by running into walls, which is fine if you take everything gingerly, but you would be surprised how quickly you gather enough speed to just smack into a wall, the same goes with flying. It is annoying but manageable, though it does feel pretty bad when you move three squares over which is apparently enough speed to do damage to you when you are already too low, and then you die. I did that, and I am a little bitter about it. Also, the game can be a bit of a grind when you get to some of those later upgrades (that is where most of my time spent came from), which does cause the game to feel too slow at the end especially when everything else was paced well. My biggest complaint though is that the hardcore mode has some major issues, the primary being that if you run out of fuel you die. This is akin to the old game, but that feature sucked there too and with how much larger the map of Super Motherload is there become points where you will dive down grab two minerals then leave to get fuel, it gets better in the mid-late game, but I found that it was better to just unlock the Simulacrum and just use your unlimited teleports to solve that problem. I was also very frustrated that during the final boss, I got locked into a corner and was killed in less than a second. Luckily, I alt-f4ād quickly enough not to just lose all of my progress because the game lacks invincibility frames, straight up unacceptable that that can happen. Also, with the way this game plays, it should not have a boss, but the original did and so does this one. It doesnāt feel great, but what can you do about it, at least it is memorable. And a final note was that the game froze on me twice and I had to restart it. Obviously, I liked it enough to play it for 16+ hours, but the issues it has can be pretty bad. The story was changed from the original and it was fine. The ending to the original was far more memorable and interesting to me, but the new story is far less ridiculous for better or worse. Overall, it was acceptable. The sound design is decent, the music is pretty good although it does just stop sometimes (and for very long times at that) and it really feels odd to drill in silence. Other games have enough atmosphere and engagement that silence can be good and complement the game; this is not one of those games. Especially when the engine noise has this high-pitched noise that is constant if you listen for it and have good enough hearing to hear it. Beyond that offense to the ears, the sound effects overall are pretty good. And I was not expecting voice acting, but honestly, it is pretty good. A little campy at times but it has a lot of emotion and love put into it. The graphics have their own style to them and I think it works pretty well. It is nothing too fancy, but it has a feeling of āFlash Games, but modernizedā and I like that. Everything is really clear and functional as well, so I have no complaints. In conclusion, for the cheap price you can pick this game up for when it is on sale, it is well worth playing, hell, you even get two games in one! I do suggest that unless you are a completionist you just avoid hardcore though, it really isnāt that fun. But if you donāt mind a simple and fun indie game with a lot of charm, I think this one is a must-have.
