For someone like me who became a gamer primarily via 16-bit action games this is simply a delight. Big, bright spritework, a story that doesn't take itself seriously, lots of shiny stuff to collect, and that special finger-painted touch of the invitingly surreal that only a developer composed of dyed-in-the-wool fans of the era could successfully capture. While there were some areas that took a bit of perseverance for me to get through, as other reviewers have noted this isn't really a "precision platformer" the way most folks define the term; it's considerably more forgiving (and in some cases exploitable) than a Super Meat Boy-style offering, though it should be noted that you can make the game considerably more challenging by simply choosing to forego most or all of the optional upgrades you can buy with the gems you gather up. That said, if you don't mind a bit of lighter fare it's lots of fun just bounding around the rooms hoovering up valuables and bonking baddies into oblivion. Certain nuances of the controls do take a bit of experimentation to figure out, and enemy attacks can sometimes clip you from offscreen before you can react to them, but the frustrating moments were far outweighed by the desire to experience all the silly, happy vibes on offer; as it happens this is one of the few games in my library with a full set of cheevos attached, and from start to finish I never got tired of the cheery "Mombo Combo!" celebration whenever you string a full sequence of enemy erasures together. Minor gripes notwithstanding, for me this was a real "feel like a kid again" kind of experience, and the sort of game I like to think I might have made if I ever had the talent and expertise to do so; thankfully, others have picked up the slack for me, and I heartily thank them for the handful of hours I spent with their game, and being reminded of why I ever picked up a controller in the first place.

What a unique twist on the Metriodvania genre, and let me add this feels like quite the throwback to the 90s and early 00s in art style and sound design. I loved playing this charming adventure!

Great metroidvania with a lot of soul that doesn't overstay its welcome. I recommend it especially to those who thought other MVs were too cumbersome.

Bought it more to give support to local developers, and was incredibly surprised by this game. Took me 5 hours to finish (I was so engaged I did not even stop playing during this 5 hours). I must say a had A LOT OF FUN! The concept of this game is great! Congrats to all the developers!!! Excited for Super Mombo Quest 2!!! :)
