best pc baseball game, wish there were more things in franchise like trading for players, and wish they had a career mode of sorts, but otherwise no complaints

SMB3 and SMB4 are my favorite baseball games. However, they are both missing some things that would heavily improve the single-player experience. - Career Mode - To me any sports game made nowadays should have a career mode in which you play as your created player. It is something that has been done since before 2010 and I don't understand why these games don't have it. - Regular Season Franchise Awards - Awards like Silver Slugger, Cy Young, Gold Glove, MVP, etc. There doesn't have to be a big cut scene or award ceremony, just a simple slideshow with the different awards and the names of the players who won them would be sufficient. There is already enough offensive and pitching stat tracking to pull it off. - Defensive Stat Tracking - This sort of ties into the last one with Gold Gloves being reliant on defensive stats like PO and more. More advanced stats would be cool too, especially WAR. However, that isn't as pressing as the simple defensive ones, in my eyes. Defense is my favorite part of baseball so I have a pretty heavy bias towards this one. There are probably a couple of other minor issues with the game modes and what not, but those are the few things that are immediately apparent to me every time I play the game. I will have 500+ hours in this by the time SMB5 comes out regardless of whether or not these changes are made. I just hope that at least the next game will have these features and more.

You still don't need The Show. You might want The Show, but SMB4 is the game you need. It is better in every metric, just like SMB3 was. Do not write it off if you aren't a fan of the aesthetic. I'm telling you, it does not matter. Either it will grow on you and you will accept it's charm, or you will deal with it. It is the best baseball game on the market and it's not even close. It will not scratch the realism itch right away. It, however, WILL be genuinely funnier, happier, cooler, and you will have a better time. And in terms of raw simulation (stats, numbers, etc), you will see that it actually does do this just as good. The game is for everyone. The difficulty is highly customizable. It ranges from 0 Ego (trivially easy, young kids can enjoy) to 100 Ego (you have to be a computer), and these are able to be tuned for individual aspects. I find my sweet spot at 50-55 Ego (Hard). It was designed so that anybody can enjoy it at whatever challenge level they like. If you like to create things, then this is the game for you. Forget just creating players, you can create entire leagues of custom teams complete with custom designed logos and uniforms down to the appearances and stats of every player. It is also worth mentioning that in SMB4, they've added a league comprised of real veteran players from the past and recent history. It is truly awesome to play with these teams that have so many of my favorite players from when I was growing up. If you want to put more in there, there's nothing stopping you from creating them. TLDR: If you like baseball in any capacity, you'll love this game.

I have over 200 hours in SMB3(and probably just as many in SMB2 before that) so I knew I was going to like SMB4. That said, this "recommended" is very conditional. I would say this game is only really worth it on sale - $65 feels too steep even if you don't own SMB3. TL;DR franchise upgrades are great, more customization, gameplay is still good, but if you aren't especially intrigued by any of those additions hold off. If you haven't played any games in the series, SMB4 is great. The actual gameplay is as good as ever with great-feeling simulation that's almost unexpected with the game's art style. The new traits that they've added since introducing the system in SMB3 are great for further turning players into archetypes and making each batter in the lineup feel a bit different. You might be encouraged to take a huge swing at the first pitch you see, or rely on high contact to foul balls off until you get one you like. Customization is great once again. There are more jersey types to work with, and the 32 layer limit on the logos has never felt restrictive. I like it as it encourages me to use the pre-made shapes and objects in different ways. Player customization is deeper as well though I never messed with that. The new art style is hit or miss - I don't love it(I think SMB3 was the sweet spot of cartoony and realistic) but it isn't off-putting enough for me to not play. The inclusion of MLB legends is neat, if only because it has a deeper slate than The Show(as a Canadian I was delighted to be able to draft Dave Stieb to my franchise team). Most of the upgrades are in franchise mode. There's more to work with when it comes to managing your roster - player loyalty, for example. The new chemistry option, which empowers traits based on how many players share the same type, adds another layer to roster building that's fun to tinker with and optimize. All that said, I think it's a worthwhile upgrade over SMB3, but if you haven't been longing for any of these additions it's not especially worth the purchase.

Awesome game so far! Runs really well on steam deck, locked 60fps with all settings maxed out. I've never played or watch baseball so I don't know why I decided to try this game? But I'm glad I did, it's just so much bloody fun, I love baseball now. Watch Ken Burns Baseball documentary to get a good idea about the sport and learn about the old school legends that feature in this game!
