Sunshine Heavy Industries is a 2D puzzle game where you are a spaceship designer tasked with building new spaceships for a variety of clients. The game was released by indie developer Rocket Rat in 2021. The premise itself is fun enough, but a layer of funny and sweet writing is stacked on top that makes the game a real pleasure to play. Each level involves a client coming to you with the specifications for their spaceship, and sometimes an existing ship for you to modify. You then use a catalog of parts to meet their requirements - expand their cargo space, increase their thrust, give them more weapons, etc. All while working within the budget that they’ve provided. Any budgeted money that’s left over can be spent to buy more parts for your catalog. As the game goes on a greater variety of parts is introduced, but so are different restrictions. You’ll have “dirty” components that leak radiation and can’t overlap crewed components, or communications equipment and weapons that need to be on the exterior of the ship, or you might be limited in terms of the changes you can make to the original ship. The gameplay is interesting and does force you to think at points while still giving you flexibility to find different possible solutions. There’s one or two puzzles that are looking for a specific solution, but they are extremely rare. On top of the enjoyable gameplay, the writing and art and music are all very pleasant and cute. The writing made me laugh many times, and there are a number of recurring clients that have funny and sometimes poignant storylines. The art is a cartoony, pixellated style and the music provides a soothing background of electronic bells and chimes. Sunshine Heavy Industries currently costs 14.99 USD at full price, and it took me about 10 hours to complete the game. Once the game is completed, you can continue to play randomly generated jobs for clients and participate in daily jobs on a leaderboard against other players Overall it’s a great game - great gameplay, great writing, great art and music and the kind of novel concept and execution I love coming across. Sunshine Heavy Industries is a great ship builder with a story to play through as you meet different customers. The cast of characters are all pretty lightly fleshed out but each completed contract gives you a little more about them, as well as adding parts to your inventory that can be used going forward. The daily ship challenges are a great additional feature that presents puzzles to solve with parts you may not have used before. Plus these folks show up again in the game Cobalt Core!

It's a low stakes chill game that lets you build starships. You're given general directions (this much thurst, this much manueverability, this much firepower) and then pretty much complete freedom to build it however you want. Missions are engaging but not particularly challenging. There aren't timed challenges and the budget restrictions are fairly generous so you can choose how hard you want it to be. If you want to compete on the leaderboards however you need to be absolutely diabolical in how you design your ship but outside of daily challenges you have a lot of freedom.

A light and wonderful puzzle game. The core of the game is very simple: put together ships to meet different requirements, while managing the heat, fuel, power, shielding, and other requirements for various part. Meeting the minimum requirements for each ship is pretty easy if you want to breeze through the game or focus on aesthetics. This isn't a Zachtronics game where you'll be spending 30 minutes staring at a tough puzzle. But if you are an optimization addict like me, there is plenty of depth even in some of the early puzzles. Little details like how smaller engines are more cost-effective for thrust but trickier to design fuel pump placement. You can place heat sinks so that they do double duty for engines and generators. An armored fuel tank is cheaper than buying armor and fuel tanks separately, but it may complicate your fuel pump placement. The presentation also makes the game so chill and friendly. So many space games feel lonely and isolated with only an occasional radio chatter or mission text to keep you company. But Sunshine is full of cute jokes and silly characters who even hang out at the bottom of the shipbuilding UI. The music has nice warm chiptunes and beats that don't feel too repetitive. And the UI itself is also very smooth and easy to use. It has all the quality-of-life features you could want. Undo, redo, drag select, copy, rotate, mirror, etc. All the warnings and tooltips are very clear and readable even when you have half a dozen different types of adjacency requirements to worry about. The puzzles in Sunshine Heavy Industries are not high-complexity or high-stakes like some other puzzle games, but they still went above and beyond with giving you a great set of construction tools.

This dev is just so good. After 10 hours in Cobalt Core, I just picked up Sunshine Heavy, and it’s the same extremely perfect pixel graphics, hilarious and adorable writing, and solid enjoyable gameplay. Highly recommended.
