Stubbs the Zombie is not just a game; it’s a nostalgic powerhouse that resuscitates the spirit of the original Xbox while carving out its own unique identity as a zombie legend. Utilizing the Halo game engine, this title is a remarkably polished experience that allows players to immerse themselves in a world where they can flip the script on traditional gaming narratives. First and foremost, let’s talk about Stubbs himself. This lovable yet gruesome character is the perfect anti-hero in a world where typically the good guys (read: humans) are celebrated. The game's narrative unfolds in a hilarious, over-the-top manner, showcasing Stubbs as he consumes flesh, orchestrates hysterical mayhem, and recruits a mindless horde of undead followers. It’s dark humor perfectly executed — think of it as a love letter to all the B-grade zombie films that have become cult classics over the years. Visually, the game is a nostalgic treat for anyone who grew up with the original Xbox. The quirky graphics hold up surprisingly well, and the art direction embraces its zany premise with style and color. But what truly shines is the gameplay mechanics, cleverly adapted from Halo's engine. The controls are smooth and responsive, making it easy to dive into chaotic brawls while feeling like a complete badass. You maneuver Stubbs with ease as you wreak havoc, making each encounter an absolute blast. The sound design also deserves a shoutout. The funky, retro-inspired soundtrack complements the gameplay perfectly, enhancing the whimsical yet chaotic atmosphere. Coupled with sound effects that punctuate every limb you remove or brain you munch, the audio ties together the overall experience nicely. And let’s not forget the price point—at just $1, it's practically a steal. For a game that’s packed with charm and personality, you’re getting a unique experience that’s well worth your pocket change. In an era where many titles retail for upwards of $60, Stubbs the Zombie is not only refreshing for its throwback aesthetic but also for its value. In conclusion, Stubbs the Zombie: Rebel Without a Pulse delivers on all fronts: humor, gameplay, nostalgia, and outrageous undead antics. It’s a perfect throwback that reminds us of simpler gaming days while providing laughs and a bit of mindless fun. Whether you're a newcomer or a seasoned gamer, this title deserves a spot in your library. So fire up the Xbox and prepare to channel your inner zombie — it's a 10/10 experience that you won’t regret!

Stubbs the zombie is an undead love story in which you: kill a man over a hotdog; have a dance off with the chief of police; urinate in a town's water supply and cause said town to be nuked. This rough around the edges rebel may not have a pulse, but certainly has both humour and heart.

This one is a quirky, offbeat adventure where you play as a zombie on a mission to munch your way through a retro-futuristic city. The game's humor and unique gameplay mechanics, like turning humans into zombies to create your own undead army, set it apart from the usual fare. It's surprisingly satisfying to wreak havoc with a variety of bizarre zombie abilities. The retro aesthetic and tongue-in-cheek tone make it a cult classic that's still worth experiencing today, especially if you're in the mood for something a bit different from the standard zombie apocalypse narrative.

This game is the most fun I've had in years. It's funny, pointless, and absolutely awesome! The controls takes a few minutes to get used to, but other than that it's a load of fun. Don't expect AAA because its not. It's old school and simple and worth every penny. My absolute favourite at the moment.

The history behind this game is so bizarre. Co-founder of Budgie and Head of Halo: Combat Evolved makes his own studio, Wideload Games, as an experiment to see how being the head of an indie game dev studio would be. The goal in mind with the studio was to create conservatively-budgeted game titles that would sell well in the games market; Stubbs was the game that would test that premise. Only 12 employees actually worked on the main components of this game, while the Boss would hire up to sixty contractors to work on the rest. Being the only other game I know of that uses the Halo engine besides Halo, they ran into problems with development because the Halo engine was such a piece of shit to develop with; they had to provide training for their contractors just to work with the thing. This lead to there being, "A lack of cohesion" in the office; teams running off with their own ideas and interpretations of how things should be implemented. In the end, that's the biggest flaw with Stubbs: lack of cohesion. A whole bunch of cool ideas half-baked and never fully realized, level design that isn't all that good, the complete lack of music during many levels. In the end, this is a sandbox game that doesn't fully realize it's sandbox potential, creating this half-dead mediocre game that's better as a proof-of-concept than anything else. Hell, the studio that MADE this game was a proof-of-concept. Get this for around 6 bucks on sale. As for this remaster, it works fine for Nvidia users. If you're Team AMD (like me), you'll have to use dxvk to get the framerate above 30. Now, how about Wideload studios? Well, Stubbs sold...okay-ish. They then made Hail to the Chimp, which is complete shovelware garbage. After that, they made a branch of their studio called Wideload Shorts, to go after the oh-so-lucrative market of those XBox 360 arcade games. I tried to find info on their arcade games, but literally no one cared about any of Wideload Short's games so there is nothing. Inexplicably, they were bought by The Walt Disney Company and made a couple of shovelware games for them too on the wii and mobile. Finally they were shut down in 2014; Stubbs is the only game from them really worth talking about.
