Pros: All-star voice cast. Bangin' character art. Unique blend of mystery, mythology, and visual novel style storytelling. Choices that actually have an impact on characters' storylines. Creative songwriting where your decisions impact the lyrics. Very replayable. I haven't explored all romances, but the one I did was sweet and convincing and I'm going to go write fanfiction about it. Cons: 3D assets look seriously awful. I wish they had stuck with the same 2D comic-esque art style for the backgrounds as well as the characters. The mystery is obvious. Main story is short. Many songs are forgettable/pitchy/not mixed well. Not much of a roleplaying element for a "roleplaying" game. You aren't able to go back and see dialogue you missed or create multiple saves. Overall: 7/10 Despite falling short in a few areas I enjoyed this game and plan to play again to see how other choices play out. And look at Persephone some more - I mean what?

This is more of an interactive musical movie rather than a game. I can only recommend this if you want to experience something new in gaming because this kind of game is very rare but don't expect much. The game is short but repayable with branching story like in many adventure and rpg... And as with the other 1 genres, in this game the main storyline that they give you involves detective work, so again not that unique in that regard. Also there is no other way to elaborate on this without spoiling the experience but the game story presentation does have the drawback that you can expect from being a musical. That being said, the acting, voice acting and characterizations are solid. The game can only properly being rendered in 16:9 resolution.

What an emotional journey! Stray Gods is a perfect mix of mystery, romance, and musical genres. It's a little bit short, but I think narrative-focused games, such as Stray Gods, shouldn't be too long, or else they're likely to bore you after a while. (You can find tl;dr in the end.) Besides the amazing soundtrack (it's a musical game, of course it'll be amazing, duh!), one thing I want to point out is the excellent choice of visual art style. Hand-drawn styled graphics and still animations allow the player to easily follow both the songs/lyrics and the things happening on the screen without missing anything. I also really liked how the abruptly starting singing sections that we usually see in musicals are explained in a way that's very fitting to the story. To be fair, I'm definitely not a musical play or movie gourmet or anything. I rarely watch musicals, though I've always found it a bit weird that in musicals, characters speaking with each other in a scene suddenly switch to singing for no logical or realistic reason. I know the emotional or romantic scenes are usually reflected with music in this genre, but still, I can't help but find this sudden change of pace a bit odd. However, Stray Gods, thanks to its fantasy-heavy plot, offers a reasonable excuse for this trope by telling us that all these musical sections are actually happening because our protagonist is using her power and forcing people to sing what they have in their hearts. Tl;dr if you like Telltale-like games that offers interactive stories, or you love musicals and want to try the genre as a video game, definitely give Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical a chance!

Let me explain why this is a hesitant recommendation for me, even though this game is a DNF for me. I was so excited when I saw this game pop up on Steam - so excited to hear who would be in the voice cast, so hyped for the writers and everybody who I saw was involved in this. The concept of an rpg musical sounded so fresh and new. I was so hyped to buy it and play it day one. I played for about forty five minutes and then had to close the game and step away because I needed to do something else. When I came back, my progress hadn't been saved. It was just gone. I was so confused. Turns out, they had a massive bug day one that was not even acknowledged until the next day. It was fixed the next day, but by then I had already started replaying, and I was having a lot of issues. The voice actors lines were all at different audio levels. I had to keep my finger on the volume controls because the mixing was so bad. This wasn't acknowledged until the patch fixing it a month later, but even still now there are moments where it will blow out your headphones or you have to turn the music up because someone is so quiet. On top of this, I have to admit... the all-star cast did not blow this one out of the water. Sure, there are some good moments, but for a game priding itself on being a musical, the mic quality is SO bad. And the music (the lyrics, the melodies) is at best generic, and at worst, borderline terrible. There are some moments where the actors straight up just hit flat notes. So yeah. I stopped playing. I was sad and disappointed in a game that I had been SO hyped for. But the reason this is still a hesitant recommendation is twofold. First, it isn't horrible. I stopped playing because I was upset but I may eventually come back and wrap this up. It's a playable game with great art and a unique concept. So that brings me to my second reason: I want more. I want to see this studio, or heck, another studio even, look at this game and go, "We can do better", and try this again. This game was a great idea, just poorly executed, and I want to see it improved upon.
