Even though the genre has been reinvented about 5000 times there is a certain simplicity of execution that Story of Seasons excels at that makes it a much comfier game to me than Rune Factory or Stardew. This game is arguably less mechanically complex than even the GBA entries but that often works to its benefit. It doesn't become a micromanagement business simulator which I think, for as fun as that can be, goes against the spirit of the original game on SNES. It's just a game where you inherit a farm, build it up, and ultimately establish a relationship with largely two dimensional NPCs (For what it's worth, I do think the characters are more interesting than most of the other games, but they're far from complex individuals with wants and needs) I did quite a bit on switch already but I don't remember if it even has simple things like fertilizer, you just plant crop and wait for crop and the level is based on how often you interact with crop in a rune factory-esque level up menu. My main critiques is, some events really feel like they were gonna be playable and they just aren't, the easter egg hunt is a cutscene. Also there are some tremendously cute characters like Beth, Angela and Patricia who aren't romanceable, but that is part of SoS's ongoing mission of being a milf cuckold simulator which is charming in its own right. Despite considerable ease of use introductions like almost immediate access to Sprinklers and backpacks, I think this is the game that is closest to bringing me to the same feeling as the original SNES game. I don't think this is worth a full 40 dollars or anything but 15-20 it's an easy recommend. It runs way better than it did on Switch and fulfills a niche that other casual farm sims have long worked past. I bought the season pass this go and the expanded areas don't seem worth anything, unless you really want one of the bachelors or bachelorettes or the costumes or it's a considerable sale I would skip it. If you want interesting characters with a lot of personality, You can't go wrong with any of the Rune Factories. If you want a straightforward farming game and don't have Mineral Town that might be your first go to, but if you're coming from Mineral Town or just didn't jive with the frankly cryptic progression of that game, this one is excellent. Also Reina is cute.

More relaxing, which is nice. The characters are cute and to the point. If you don't like a while load of text trying too hard to make a the same cliche characters in every farming sim seem interesting - then this will be a good game for you. Cute, charming, and to the point.

Story of Seasons: PoOT is a great addition to the Story of Season franchise. Instead of a farmland in the rural area/mountains, you get shipped off to a farmland on an island where you help to develop the town and make it a tourist-worthy location that cruise ships would like to dock at. There are a lot more customizable options that make the game very personalized for players, and a lot of portions that you can unlock and develop so it feels like you're really building on the gameplay for hours of fun, until it gets too repetitive. Pros: - Customizable character appearance for your MC at the beginning, and later you can change their looks once you've unlocked that part - Lots of farmland, with 2 unlockable areas for more space - Additional unlockable farmland areas with one of each of the four seasons for forever planting - A wide variety of crops and fruits to discover, and lots of animal varieties - Plenty of decor, accessories, machinery to build (instead of buy) - Changing the look of the town through story progression/development - Unlockable in-game achievements that award you items - Daily in-game quests that give you money - Customizable house and furniture layout, and having more than one pet - Lots of fun characters and interesting conversations - Once unlocked, magical sprites gift you items almost daily Cons: - TOO MUCH variety of items and crops. There are so many machines (some crops or goods go through 2-3 product transitions that need 1 machine each transition) and not enough space to accommodate them all, even with the expanded farmland. You also have to keep building storage boxes to store them all. - Farmland layout is weird, and you have ponds that crop up out of nowhere and make placements of barns, crops, etc very difficult - Not enough in-game storage, even with bag upgrades. Refrigerator also doesn't have enough space, even with the upgraded space. Connected to the issue with the game having too many items, and too many varieties/levels to each item - Complicated time management (due to the game having too many additional places, getting around is a challenge) - Limited variety/quantity of items you can sell in the shipping box per day - Relationship progression here with villagers and marriage candidates are much slower even with constant gift-giving - Game has an animal you can ride, and a motorcycle, but placement and number of machines and buildings makes traversing through your farm hard, and your "mode of transpo" pretty useless (at least for me) - Museum (one of the added items for completion through collecting) displays cannot be altered or customized once items are placed - Magical sprites don't help you with your farm chores, which would otherwise not have been a problem if the farm wasn't big, and you didn't have a lot of animals and crops Summary: Interesting new angle to the franchise, and the customizable portions do make it a fun play. There's a great story, and the animation and music are amazing. The characters and dialogue are fun too. Sadly, SoS tried to give the game too many additional things, that sometimes the game gets really repetitive and redundant in a not good way. The Harvest Moon franchise is supposed to be repetitive because of the farming aspect, but because PoOT has so many things you can do, it sometimes feels overwhelming. Too much to mine, too much animal products to collect daily, too many crops to harvest, too many unlocked areas to go to, etc. Great game especially if you love the franchise and farming sims, but buy it on sale. And don't bother spending on those added costumes since there's a lot of free in-game outfits you can naturally unlock.

This is a wonderful installment of the SoS/(true successors to the original harvest moon games post-natsume IP split) that is a joy to play. Not to mention it has updated QoL aspects like multiple item hotbars, light automation, streamlined UI/UX, support for key bindings and quick inputs. Like the trailers suggest, you also get to customize your farm's building placements and the like. Its better than the previous harvest moon titles that attempted this base building mechanic. The only downside is the lack of customization options for the home, with barely any space to put in your furniture in a single allotted corner. Everything else, is your oyster. The town life is pretty cool, with a myriad of town events and character stories. Some of them do feel like they are padding out the writing, but considering there's enough of them to last over 4 years of in-game time, which is 16 seasons and excluding the character cutscenes, I can see that there was plenty of effort put into making the town feel alive and fun. Just a shame that some characters feel flat because of the usual stereotyped pigeonholing, but its not necessarily bad character design... but rather predictable if you play enough of these games. Also, the point of the game is to play it YOUR way. You can hyper optimize within the first year to the point you burst past the town development goals and unlock the true endgame... randomized quests, farm decor/minmaxing and living your life your way. Is the price steep? Arguably yes... especially if you didn't get the game with the season pass which came with the DLCs included. I do recommend getting it while on discount (I say this for every game on steam), but even at 30% its reasonable. Lets face it, if you're reading this review, chances are you are a very niche type of player that enjoys farming sims like Stardew Valley, Harvestella, Rune Factory, Story of Seasons, Harvest Moon, Innocent Life, Coral Island, etc... You also most likely have played these games before and are looking for another life sim. I've sunk over 80 hrs on 2 separate playthroughs, and the game still drip feeds new content in end game like new animal types and lategame optimizations well into the 40hr mark. I'd reckon that in a single playthrough, to get max optimizations you would go well into 60 hrs, and thats excluding fully building out your entire farm to look like a paradise. If what I'm saying isn't enough to push you over the edge, remind yourself this is a cozy game that will happily wait for you to come back when you're ready. It may be a while until you feel like playing, but like most SoS lifesim games, down the road where you just want something chill. Its sitting in your library waiting to welcome you back with open arms. God I love these games.

At the beginning of this game I had issues with a black screen and had to restart several times. It was kind of really annoying especially since I didn't realize how to save the game yet and kept going in create new character customization and going through the whole cutscenes again and again. I finally figured out how to save the game (THANK GOODNESS) Took me many tries that I would care to admit restarting many times because I really wanted to play this game. Even after I learned how to save the game it kept going into black screen and I kept trying to figure out what was wrong with it and I found whenever there is multiple cutscenes 2/3/4 in a day after saving the game for the night and it going into a cutscene right in the morning, or if I was advancing to quickly for the game even before it was said; So how I fixed it was save game before every upgrade I did and tried that for a week of the game one thing a day instead of multiple if upgrading building or repairing bridges and waited a little longer and slower and tried not to get multiple cutscenes in the same day seemed to fix it. I have played multiple story of season games and xseed/marvelous games, harvest moon, on nintendo growing up and just recently got back into it in 2020 nintendo games and I found this game on steam and haven't played this one before and waited for sale for the price to go down and been playing it for a while now and I really like this game apart from all the black screens I had to deal with at the beginning of the game. It has gotten better. It's a good game. Recommended. 👍
