I'll be honest: This game is mostly for the nostalgia. OGs like me who have come from GameCube and PlayStation are thrilled to have this remake. It was one of my first farming games and sparked a lot of key interests for games like it (ie. crop hybrids, male animals included for cross breeding, and choosing a spouse who then influences your child's initial interests, later swayed by how you interact with them as they grow from toddler to a full young adult). For those who haven't played the original games, it may seem a bit bland or repetitive after a certain point as you ARE limited to a small town to traverse across your character's "Wonderful Life", but that was where some of the original charm came from for me. You grow older with the residents that you get to know, build your farm, and raise a family. I really appreciate SoS rotating back to familiar favourites and breathing some life back into them again. I can only hope that my hands-down favorite, Animal Parade, is soon to come on the remake list!

A Wonderful Life is a great starting point for Farm Sims. It can be simpler and routine than more complex Farm Sims like Stardew or even other Story of Seasons. The old GameCube version got me into these type of games and the remake is very true to it. Very nostalgic with several quality of life changes. If you already like the more complex ones you may find this one boring. It's a lot more bare bones. However, if you want a simple introduction or want to share the type of game with a younger player who may not handle all the complexities this one is a great starting place. And if you loved the old one the remake is very nostalgic. I love it for a simple destress game.

The source of my earliest childhood trauma. They mostly brought over improvements from the Special Edition and helped streamline the "life" aspect of A Wonderful Life. It isn't nearly as memorable or eventful as, say, Friends of Mineral Town, but they tried so many weird concepts that I want them to continue trying to iterate upon. Your life in general is the focus, and they change the dynamic on you with every successive year. However, there are only 10 days in a season, as opposed to the normal 28. This means that A Wonderful Life is not only much shorter, but paced in a way that you have to keep up with more routines. AWL is more grounded than the usual expected formula, similar to Save the Homeland, and some of these aspects are what Stardew Valley wound up remixing in lieu of a more cutesy fairy-tale story that games like Magical Melody or Tree of Tranquility tended to hard-focus on. The Story of Seasons version of AWL does cute-ify the original experience quite a lot. I don't exactly mesh with the oversaturated look, same with Stardew, but SoS: AWL has the unfortunate issue of having this annoying green filter over everything. Many of the animations from the original AWL were removed or truncated for ease of access, which is a welcome change, although I wish they just made the original animations faster instead. I love the character re-designs, and I love the way they improved upon the original, taking ideas from every previous version of AWL and modernizing it. You can romance any partner regardless of gender identity, the ability to decide your child's gender was also simplified from the original. Instead of the original GameCube game having 10 years, this version takes the Special Edition's approach and truncates it to 6 years with an endless mode at the end of the main storyline. You can obtain a handful of additional outfits throughout the game, and if you're ever stuck, they explain about 90% of the game verbosely through an in-game guide. The last 10% were fairly obtuse mechanics that required Google to solve, but could ultimately be discovered organically by the remainder of individuals who still take notes. Most importantly, while this version is basically a port of the Switch release, it runs significantly better than the Special Edition while keeping the quality of life, which makes this arguably the best version to play. If you really want to stick to tradition, the original GameCube game is never far away, but this is a welcome (see: stable) substitute for one of the most notorious versions of the game, which is the PS2 Special Edition. I hope they continue to try out this "life" style of Story of Seasons, or at least remix them in ways that work with their new style, because AWL left a huge impression on me as a kid that no other farm life RPG has done since. Every new game tries something new, but sometimes it's good to go back to what was done before and find out what would work for future games.

Back in the old A Wonderful Life game days, animals could get dirty. And when they got dirty, you had to manually push them to a nearby water trough just for the option to clean them to appear when holding your brush. Cows would eventually run out of milk and you'd be required to breed them in order to get more milk from them. There was also only a single goat you were allowed to purchase, and once you bought that goat, you couldn't get anymore. That goat would also eventually run out of milk and there was no option to sell the goat, so you would either have to continue caring for this goat for the rest of your playthrough or starve it to death to open up the space. The remake isn't perfect, but it fixed several (but not all) of the issues that the original game had. It made a few new issues in its wake, like the fact that animals will breed any chance there's an open spot or the fact that Blue Tree Crops in particular are a pain to S rank. The lack of dialogue and the slow, grindy feeling you get as you progress to the final years are something that have existed in the original games and while the did add a number of new cutscenes and events, especially those involving your child, it's not a full fix. I cannot say this will appeal to people who prefer the more tradition style of farm sims like Harvest Moon, Stardew Valley or even other Story of Seasons games. I will say that this is the best version of A Wonderful Life and if you ever wanted to give this game a shot, this is the easiest version to experiment with. After all, I finally have tools that are actually upgradable. I can catch more than 1 fish per hour in game now. And most importantly I don't have to hold two (or three if you got the Special Edition) different game boxes up and ask myself if I want to play the boy or girl version while trying to remember all the differences between them.

Wonderful game if you are part of the original Harvest Moon series. It brings back really good memories of playing this game on my game cube with a lot of graphics improvements and game play improvements. I am curious when they are going to remake my beloved Magical Melody.
