Steelrising is a alluring yet macabre tale set in Paris during the French revolutionary period. The game follows the exploits of Aegis as she battles a plethora of mechanized enemies while untangling the web of events surrounding the automaton uprising and their relation to King Louis XVI. Pros: +Good Story: As Aegis progresses in her journey, elements concerning her origins, the mystery behind the automaton uprising & rising political powers in France are all unveiled. The story's overall ending, good or bad can also be influenced based on the individuals Aegis aligns with & helps throughout her journey. +Great Graphics: Lights & clockwork, Aegis and other automatons all look unique while 1789 Paris and surrounding locations are all beautifully rendered in its grim steampunk aesthetic. +Good Combat: The combat while clunky & imprecise at times makes good use of melee & ranged weapons. Some modules & upgrades acquired throughout the story also aid in combat by boosting the effectiveness of certain weapons & their elemental effects. +Good Controls: The game's controls are simple and responsive when taking on enemies or traversing the grim streets of Paris. +Great Soundtrack: The ambient music played throughout the story definitely suits the period, tone & steampunk aesthetic of the game. Cons: -Random glitches & bugs: While not really surprising especially if you have played other games from this developer, having to restart from a save because you get stuck in a menu or dialogue options not showing up can get annoying. -Combat Fatigue: With the exception of main bosses, enemy encounters are basically rinse & repeat which can become boring after a while. -Poor Dialogue: Long winded dialogue options while sometimes shed light on the motives of secondary characters, often lend little to the main plot at hand, you may find yourself skipping lines of dialogue just to get on with it.

[url=https://store.steampowered.com/curator/38888018-United-Critics/] Please follow United Critics for quality reviews Steel Rising Review About the Game Steel Rising is an alternate history Souls-Like single-player, third-person action game, where you play as Aegis, an Automaton tasked with stopping the mad tyranny of King Louis XVI and his automaton army. Story You play as Aegis, an automaton created to protect Marie-Antoinette during her lockup in the Tuileries Palace, while the King deals with the French Rebellion in Paris, but the Queen feels like she is there as more of a prisoner, than someone who is being protected, and feels the King has gone mad and tasks Aegis with stopping the King, which ultimately results in you assisting French Revolution. Some historical facts and figures do not fit their real-life narrative at all, even being polar opposites of what they were, which can be excused saying it’s alternative history, but will for sure bother some. Gameplay Like most souls-likes, you play in a third-person perspective, slowly hacking and slashing your way through enemies, and the occasional bosses, each weak against a certain style of play. You can find just over 30 different weapons, a lot of which don’t take too long for you to come across and fit different styles of play from speed to strength and range focus. With this many weapons, the game leaves a lot of space for testing out various builds and tactics, but you sadly cannot respect which can limit your options of trying different builds later in the game. Of course, you can also find different kinds of armor sets, each being better resistant against certain kinds of damage. (Ultimately didn’t feel like they made much of a difference) You of course have a stamina bard, which results in you overheating if you use it up, but you can cool it down with a press of a button after exhaustion, which regains a certain amount of stamina, which allows you to keep moving as if you didn’t run out, but at the downside of afflicting yourself with frost, which slows you down if you do it too many times without waiting in between. Every time you die, you respawn at a checkpoint at which you can upgrade your weapons, level up your character, and unlock new Module slots (if you have the required item), which allows you to equip more Keys, which give various buffs to your character (can also be upgraded.) Visuals This one comes to a difference in subjective opinion, and to me, the game looks great with a nice touch of detail on the environment and characters, but some others criticize it, saying the graphics are low resolution but that may be because I don’t care too much about having the best graphics known to mankind. The game does have some performance issues, and can stutter even on lower graphics on modern specs, but it’s not very consistent, as sometimes it runs smoothly, and other times it drops in the same areas. Audio The game has voice acting for both Aegis, and other characters you come across, and the voice acting is at the very least decent, but some may have issues having to listen to a mix of English and French in the same sentence, which can make dialogue feel janky and annoying. Pros and Cons Pros [*] Decent variety of weapons, [*] Interesting story concept, although not executed too well, Cons [*] Combat wasn’t overly enjoyable, and heavily favours agility over other styles, [*] Playing felt a bit boring and was difficult to get into, [*] Sometimes enemies just glitch around while standing still sort of teleporting on the spot. Conclusion The game isn’t as bad as some try to make it seem, but it certainly isn’t that good either. It felt very difficult to get into, and I can’t really say I particularly enjoyed it, but that’s likely as a result of comparing it to some other soul-likes while playing. If you don’t go into the game with the expectation of higher standard games of the same genre, you can still enjoy it, so I would recommend it when it’s on a discount. Rating: 5/10

I was pretty down on this game after the first 10 of my 27 hours but the second half of the game and the dlc redeemed it for me in a lot of ways. The game has issues but there is also a lot to like. Things I like: The weapon selection is eclectic. It uses archetypes like many other soulslikes, but instead of longswords, shortswords etc it's fans, wheels, weighted chains, claws etc. Every character build archetype (meaning what direction you develop your character in, there are no classes) has an option to disable or disrupt enemy behavior. Alchemy gets status effects, agility gets immobilization, and strength gets impact. Unfortunately, this does make the game pretty easy. The setting is very unique. The enemies are very detailed. Unfortunately you can't actually see this most of the time, but the artists paid an awful lot of attention to each individual enemy variant. The sidequests usually have 2 resolutions, and can affect which ending you get. The level design has plenty of shortcuts and intersections, which I appreciate. Light metroidvania elements make the traversal more interesting than average for a soulslike. The combat is well implemented. It's not buggy, the attacks have weight, etc. Boss fights are well done, but they probably don't have enough health and the fights are over too quickly to really test the player. The DLC level was very enjoyable, with the new enemies being a welcome escalation in challenge with fun gimmicks and a good boss. Things I don't like: For the first half of the game you have very little to go on plot wise, and the sidequests don't really start up until the end of the Luxembourg level, so the first few levels are less fun in my opinion. This is exacerbated by most of the early levels being city streets for large portions of the levels. If you don't use the compass it can be difficult to navigate these areas. The plot is too simplistic for the way they dripfeed information to the player. You figure out the basic strokes by the time you defeat the first boss, and then don't really get more information or plot development until the end of the fourth level. The combat is too easy. The combination of readily available and powerful consumable items along with the disruptive combat mechanics I mentioned earlier make most of the game very easy. I did find sections of the final level and dlc more challenging, but I very rarely died and I never died to a boss. The game is woefully unoptimized. There is little difference in performance on my machine between 1440p and 4k on ultra; they both run acceptably but I would expect to see a higher performance impact. On steam deck this game is an absolute nightmare; running it on low settings really doesn't save your hardware as much as it should, and I recommend avoiding playing this on the deck. I recommend this game if you are interested in the setting, if you are looking for a soulslike with some unique mechanics, or are looking for an easier soulslike and would appreciate the variation in story outcomes. For novelty seekers I would stress that the mechanical variations are appreciable but not transformative.

And that's Steelrising beaten. What a strong start leading to kind of a weak finish. It's cool to see Spiders experimenting with other genres, even if I'm not the biggest Soulsborne fan, but I'm not sure one so dependent on enemy variety and exploration is the best pick for a side project while they develop other games. Game took me about 13 hours, not counting the 10 hours I accidentally left it on overnight, lol. +The world, art direction, etc, are all fantastic. Creative designs, cool architecture, fun twist on the French Revolution. +Boss designs were creative and interesting as well, and each major boss had pretty unique mechanics. +Weapon variety isn't bad at all, with some fun special abilities like alchemical power-ups, meteor hammers, etc. +Aegis is a neat character for how basic her concept is; I liked her in a kind of dignified way. Also highly customizable. +Honestly NOT an ugly game. It's not cutting-edge, but for a small studio like Spiders, it's impressive how consistently good-looking much of the world and enemies were. +AWESOME accessibility options, some of the best I've seen. Total invincibility, damage discounts, stamina consumption, etc. Tailoring to your preferences is very possible. +Consistently solid PC port. No crashes, performance was solid. Some framedrops in fire-heavy areas but nothing that felt too painful. +Some surprisingly decent platforming bits. -For a Soulsborne, availability of healing is a big deal. This game makes potions cheap and plentiful and I had 90 of them by game's end. This kind of meant I could windsprint between bosses and ignore the back half of the game. Infinite stamina potions only made this worse. Singlehandedly the biggest problem. -The story is just...weak. Some cool ideas are buried under a shitload of cutscenes about french dudes arguing, and it feels very disjointed and weird. -Combat, while feeling good, never meaningfully evolves, due largely to lack of variety in enemy types. 'Fat robot, spear robot, snake robot, soldier robot, and flail robot' literally make up 80% of foes, with only occasional deviations. Prooobably 15-20 actually distinct enemies in the entire game? It became noticeable by the end. -Many side missions require a Metroid-vania style backtracking once you have boss equipment, but it's more tiring than fun because nothing changed in that area while you were gone. -Side quests in general all amount to 'go here, pick up object, watch french dude talk for awhile', fight reskinned miniboss'. Felt them eminently skippable. All in all, the game opened as a potential 8/10, but by the end, it felt like more of a 6/10 for the reasons above. It's a worthy Souslborne take for the world design and weapon options, but you definitely feel the seams of the Eurojank budget by halfway through. Still recommended because it does some interesting things.

I'd give it maybe 6 or 7/10. Positives: + Nice maps with shortcuts that loop around each other souls style. I think the level design and aesthetics in general is the best thing about this game. + One third into the game you get a grappling hook that adds verticality to the maps. + No annoying delayed attacks from bosses like other recent soulslikes. + If you've been to France, you'd recognize some of the places and buildings which I loved. + Great design for the main character. Better than Lies of P for me. + With the optional sidquests, this game can be as long or as short as you want it to be. + Actual people and places froom the French revolution features in the story and I'm always interested in how a game depicts historial figures although your mileage may vary. + Main bosses (not counting minibosses) are well-designed, although still too easy. + The immobility mechanic is a nice addition to encourage being aggressive. Negativs: - Low enemy variety - The minibosses are just sliiightly amped up versions of regular enemies. Same attacks and everything. - Lots of weapons but many of them feel similar to each other (though their special attacks are different so that helps a bit) - Gets super easy especially after a few hours in once you've chosen a weapon fit for your style of play. If you're here for the challenge, skip this game- - Occasional poor visual cues. Like, there'll be a short hedge that clearly looks like you can just jump over it, but when you actually try there's an invisible wall stopping you because the game doesn't want you to be there yet. - I don't like the way the mud looks in a lot of areas. It looks like graphical components that hasn't fully rendered in yet. - After 19 hours I already felt done with the game. If I continue on with sidequests I'd get so tired of it.
