I really loved the first game, and I the sequel is excellent as well! I beat the game in 42 hours (higher than what Steam reports as I played a good bit offline on my Steam Deck), which included getting full stars on all missions, unlocking all upgrades, and unlocking all crew. Pros + Great combat, which is like a combination of turn-based tactics and the Worms games :) + Beautiful visuals + Fun story + Very satisfying to have a turn where multiple abilities work together to let you get a lot of kills/deal a lot of damage + Hats! 🎩 + Moving around the overworld in the submarine and having some real-time combat was fun and a change of pace between missions Neutral * Job system -- I'm a little mixed here. You level up a character's "job" based on their currently equipped weapon type (e.g. sniper). All abilities are active for their current job, and you can enable abilities from their other jobs they have leveled up using a limited amount of "cogs". What seemed to make sense to me was get each character's main job up to level 5, but also cycle through the other jobs to get characters to level 2-3 for most other jobs (otherwise you are missing out on other abilities/synergies and sitting on unused "cogs"). So it's good that it forces a little experimentation and lets you unlock abilities, but through the mid to late game I felt like I was constantly swapping weapons around to try to get characters leveled up, so they were rarely being used for their "best" job. There were some really neat combinations I found, but most I didn't discover until the game was about over. Cons - No way to inspect your characters, enemies, etc. which is unfortunate. This is pretty much expected in most tactics/strategy games (for example, to see what status effects a character has and what they mean, the movement range of enemies, etc). - UI for some of the floor hazards could use some work. For example, if a player ends a turn on some tiles they will get a negative status effect. Most of the time you get warned with a big ⚠️ symbol on your move cursor, but if that tile also has an item or interactive element, it will just display the ⚙️symbol indicating interaction. IMO, it should display both symbols to avoid a user moving to a tile not realizing they would take the negative status effect. - Alarms/countdown timers -- It seems that just about every mission is forcing you to be aggressive because of "alarms" that will increasingly spawn more enemies or achieve the objective in X turns. You can mitigate this a good bit by using custom difficulty and turning "mission urgency" all the way down . While I don't mind this concept entirely, I found its frequency annoying (way more than the first game from what I can recall) - I was surprised to never unlock any kind of fast travel ability. While I overall liked the overworld and submarine combat, I would have found it useful a few times in the 2nd half of the game to be able to warp between bars or something. Overall a great game! 4/5

Great piece, both as a standalone, and as a second installment in a series. Comprehensive story, neat visuals, handy controls. Provides tension and challenge at all stages of the game, while being approachable and open for experiments: free restarts, mid-combat checkpoints, multiple build options, etc. The star feature of the series is its aiming mechanic. It brings a tangible, interactive way of both judging and controlling your chances. Most tactical games incite massive outrage with misses on 95% shots, but this one doesn't: if you miss, it's entirely on you. Fair. Good sport.

Steamworld Heist 2 accomplishes something quite rare in the modern gaming age, being an innovative yet true to their roots sequel. I've enjoyed everything about the game, what set Steamworld Heist 1 apart from similar-ish games of it's ilk was the unique world and characters, all this has been expanded upon in this sequel, to the point where I felt a lot more emotionally attached to the Leeway Crew than to the one captained by Faraday. This is a good thing and does not leave the original in a worse light by any stretch of the imagination. The music production has been amped up significantly, and really immersed me into the unique world of..Steam...world. I was slightly worried about the game prior to it's launch because I felt Steamworld Build did not quite grasp it's universe's feel, those worries have been dashed quite expertly. For those who can't afford too many games: The price-quality ratio is perfectly fine, the game is not that long, but the devs clearly respect it if you look at the pricetag. If you want a unique experience in skillbased turn-based battles, as well as a charming story, buy the first one, and if you're hooked? The second one is right here as well.

Wonderful game, it took me 30 hours which is plenty of content for the price. If you are familiar with steamworld heist 1 here are the improvements: -overworld map with ship combat. You can get new abilities to reach new areas -pretty complex job system. This feature gives you much more control over your units' progression then in the first. You can make some really op combos -meta upgrades. You can upgrade your ship, crewmate abilities, and job skills. -ability to load during battle, taking you back one or two turns. This is a great addition! Aside from this there is also a lot of great music in the inns. Overall I think this game is better played after the first one, so you have a good understanding of the base mechanics. But that aside, its a much more tactically deep game and it has a much better atmosphere imo (the world map does a lot here) I noticed one negative during my playthrough, which is that hats are very awkward to use. I equip a hat that looks cool, and if it is knocked off during a mission i have to equip it again. This is mildly annoying, hopefully the devs fix it. But overall wonderful game, give it a try!

Not long into it, but can already tell it's everything great about SteamWorld Heist 1 and more. The SteamWorld franchise titles are instant purchases for me and this is no exception. Was counting down the minutes to release and am eager to dive back into this beloved world! Heist 1 was my favorite in the franchise so I'm beyond eager to see where this new adventure takes us.
