Played through the game 4 times. Each time takes 6-9 hours to play through. 2 times with base game on normal and hard difficulty. 2 times with the mechcanized expansion. Game is alright! For your city builder or factorio fans it's very, very light and simple. It's more like a well made and solid introduction to the basic concepts of ANNO, City management and Factorio. A fun game and enjoyable time. But the time is short and the game is done and dusted quickly.

If you're looking for a easy and interesting city builder... Then this game is for you. If you're looking for a game that you can finish for the accomplishment... This game is for you too. If you're looking for a time killer that you can complete without too much stress where the graphics are great and the glitches are few... This game is for you too! No, I'm not smoking anything but chicken fajitas. It's a very good game to get into. So are the chicken fajitas... I ain't lie'n... I'm enjoying both!

This is a pretty enjoyable -- if light -- entry into the SteamWorld series of games. As has been mentioned frequently elsewhere, it's a mix of some city-building on the surface (modelled a bit on the Anno series), and some underground mining sections (modelled a bit on Dungeon Keeper). Neither activity is especially complex. Veterans of more complex city-building (and/or factory automation) games might find they miss some QOL features to keep closer tabs on various aspects of resource production and consumption, before eventually realizing that the "simulation" is light enough that you don't really need those to keep on top of everything. The game's got a story attached which is quite barebones (and ends a little nonsensically), but it's nice to have an actual goal to work towards in a game like this, and I always enjoy catching up with the SteamWorld bots. IMO, the game's biggest letdown is the "combat" features which happen underground, particularly with the periodic hive attacks. They're fine once you realize that the "Guard" unit is practically useless for those (at least until unlocking a later-game buildable to vastly enhance their mobility), and that the real solution is just to aggressively over-build on the "turret" defenses instead. In the end it's basic and straightforward enough that checking in on hive attacks felt more like a bother than a chance for excitement. The game could really use some extra complexity. Once a player's gotten to grips with how resources are handled, and done one of the early production lines, there's not really much variance left to the game. The four levels of citizenry you unlock through the game aren't really any different in terms of mechanics; each one's just got a separate set of buildings and production facilities needed to support them, but they may as well all use the same ones. You're not doing anything different to support Scientists than you were to support Engineers -- it's just that the buildings have different names and they're using different raw resources. Likewise, the underground sections don't really offer anything new in terms of mechanics once the hive attacks are encountered. Level 3 is really just Level 2 with a separate coat of paint. Anyway, all that probably sounds like I'm being harder on the game than I intend to. It's a breezy little game which hits some Pavlovian reward centers when unlocking the various components, and it runs beautifully. I was playing on Linux via Proton and had zero issues at any stage. In the end, I'd give it a recommendation despite my various nitpicks.

I liked the game. It has several drawbacks though. What can be improved: * It is very short with only 6 stages * The only difference between the stages is the graphics/layout of the town * It will get repetitive when you've done all 5 stages and are just hunting for the last few achievements. How to improve: Let the towns have different amounts of layers in the mine with increased difficulty the lower you get Maybe a gauntlet with an unlimited amount of layers with increased difficulty But with that said. This is a great first resource management game for new players that is very true to the SteamWorld series.

I read over some other reviews to see if I just missed something but no, the game really is how it presents itself. So what is it? I would describe it as a base builder that has been streamlined to make room for the RTS-ish mining gameplay. For all it's commitment to the town, you spend most of your time in the mines. The game, thankfully, does give you reasons to care about what is happening in the other one, but the town has a very "fire and forget" experience. Build some stuff you need, upgrade a few things here or there. Back to the mines to continue exploration. If I'm honest it doesn't *quite* come together but it's not a mess. I think some of the issue is just that you don't really understand the significance of a bunch of mechanics until you've been playing for a while and the game really never tells you. It just asks you to build a bunch of stuff and only later do you recognize what the value of doing it any particular way was. Something I would point out specifically is it has a story and a conclusion. It's not a particularly good story or a memorable conclusion but I still appreciate games that have the balls to end, especially simulation games, and this one does when it should. If you were hoping to get SimCity then this isn't it. It feels a bit like Anno 1776 but instead of boats you mine. It all works well enough but I think the real flaw of the game is being perfectly competent. It's hard to work up a good sweat over anything that was well done or botched, everything worked as intended and the game was pretty frictionless. Despite it's lack of real guidance, it's also simple enough that there are no unrecoverable errors to make. I can see why people aren't really talking about this one but it would be disingenuous to call it bad. It sets out to do what it does and accomplishes it perfectly satisfactorily. The town/mine gameplay is arguably its unique selling point and it feels very much like a SteamWorld Dig game. It doesn't get my most enthusiastic approval, but I had fun with it.
