State of Decay is hands down one of the best zombie survival games on steam. There's more to it than just a zombie game. You have to manage resources and scavenge for supplies. You have to manage your relationship with other survivors. You have to manage your team's morale, unique backstory & traits. When someone dies, it dies forever. There are unique zombies with special habilities. There are some bugs though. Driving fast with some cars may make you hit phantom walls or rocks that damage your car and slows you down. To avoid this, use high SUVs instead of small cars. Note for Steam Deck / Linux users: This game runs exceptionally well on Steam Deck / Linux, no crashes or glitches.

10/10 This game legitimately put me through the five stages of grief. I played the whole game exclusively as the starting characters Marcus and Ed. I was playing as Ed finally getting to the final location and scouting the surroundings, went to survey from the Ferris wheel and upon finishing instead of grabbing the ladder Ed launched himself to the ground. DENIAL: Even when he was squirming on the ground he still showed some health left so I told myself "It's ok, he will get up", when screen started fading I was like "Oh no" and exited to the menu. Loaded and spawned as Marcus listening to Lilis funeral speech. The game saved. ANGER: I was pissed, it wasn't my fault it was a bug, this cannot be, I won't stand for it BARGAINING: I was scouring internet for hours searching for a way to return to an older save version, through files, through recovery software. DEPRESSION: It was futile, there was no way, Ed was dead. ACCEPTANCE: I was left with a world where Ed, so sure of his maxed out reflexes slipped from a Ferris wheel and splatter on the ground. Finished the game as Marcus but the memory of Ed stayed with me. Rest in peace you spin-kicking beast.

While it never truly feels like it reaches its full potential or the promise Undead Lab’s ideas hold for the genre, State of Decay: Year-One is still a fun, fascinating take on the tradition of zombie-apocalypse games that’s worth playing for hardcore fans. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3252868056

If you are like me and you played Days Gone before you played this, it might feel like a step back at first to play SODYO. The graphics aren't quite as good. The zombie 'horde' is nowhere near as scary as the legions that wander around Days Gone. But that doesn't mean SODYO is bad. Far from it. Trying not to get overrun is still a constant concern. Limited supplies will still have you panicking. The graphics thing, the lack of polish thing, you'll get used to it. You've done it before. This game is worth your time.

State of Decay: Year One Rating: 6/10 State of Decay was a game that captivated me when it first launched on the Xbox 360. A zombie apocalypse survival simulator featuring resource and relationship management, it felt reminiscent of The Walking Dead—a show I used to watch with my family. I dedicated countless hours to playing the game back in the day, often meeting my demise in-game. Returning to State of Decay after some time, I find myself experiencing a mix of nostalgia and frustration, much like during my initial playthrough. The story, which should be a significant driving force in the game, unfortunately remains forgettable. Glitches are abundant and often detrimental, especially when they lead to the loss of a well-developed character. The missions lack variety and depth, leading to gameplay that becomes tedious after a few hours. While the shooting mechanics are passable, they too are prone to glitches. The final mission of the main campaign is particularly disappointing—a lengthy, uninspired protection mission where the infected attack from three sides, lacking even a basic in-game representation of the bomb crucial to the story. Pros: - Intriguing concept. - Adequate shooting gameplay. - Establishing and managing outposts is somewhat engaging. - Building and leading a zombie apocalypse survival group. Cons: - Underdeveloped story. - Repetitive, uninspiring missions. - Combat is both monotonous and glitch-ridden. - Vehicle handling is unrealistic, with cars feeling overly floaty. - Frequent, game-ruining glitches. - Zombies often slide in animations, interrupting gameplay by unrealistically grabbing the character, which is a recurring issue.
