This is a great RTS Game. I was a bit skeptical because of the squad style, but it was awesome! They are building a custom scenario section as well, but the territory battles are pretty awesome until then. Games can take 15 minutes to 2 hours depending on your experience and the combination of enemies.
"If we ain't dying, we aren't trying!" If you're a fan of the first movie, don't hesitate as long as I did. I put off this RTS based on a sci-fi film classic for years, only to get exactly what I wanted within the very first few missions. The iconic movie quotes, the officially licensed setting, and the soundtrack are all very close to what you know from the film. The satirical news broadcasts are also bound to entertain you. The gameplay is fun, and the missions deliver precisely what you’re looking for: exploration, holding bases, and attacking hives. You get an atmosphere extremely faithful to the movie. Nearly two dozen missions will keep you entertained for about 11 hours. While the initial missions aren't too tough on normal difficulty, don't worry—the bugs just keep coming in larger and larger numbers. I would definitely rate the base game higher than its three DLCs. The only thing that occasionally pulled me out of an otherwise great experience was how the fog of war functioned. In the DLCs, however, you step away from the beloved Mobile Infantry to take on the roles of mercenaries, police units, and eventually some sort of exterminators. The first DLC was still fine, the second bored me story-wise, and I actually struggled to finish the third one. Unforgivable design flaws and unit AI issues are largely to blame. Across the entire main campaign, I never encountered as many frozen units or pathfinding "bugs" as I did in the DLC campaigns. Despite that, I pushed through all DLC campaigns and logged a total of 30 hours in the game. I can recommend the base game with a clear conscience. A great, quick-bite RTS. I'm not sure if there's much replayability factor here—probably not. But I enjoyed those 11 hours immensely. Rating 7/10
Nails the Atmosphere of Starship troopers pretty well, both how ♥♥♥♥♥♥ it is to fight on the human side and the sheer amount of bug enemies and their overwhelming strength. Gameplay is mostly squad based combat management with micro required, this is not a base building and resource gathering game
It's a squad commander game on a larger RTS map level. You can't push simultaneously in two locations, unless you are willing to be the god of micro managing, I mean it can be done but you're potentially opening yourself up to a wiped squad if you aren't paying attention. A squad can be 'wiped' before the melee even begins just because you've walked blindly into an area without say, armour piercing pulse guns for tiger bugs. You will likely not out run the bug and will lose 12 people just like that. But that's where the beauty of this game is. It IS punishing if you try to do too much. Instead, you are forced to look at the map, where all location types such as radio stations, control points etc are mapped out accordingly, including bug holes. It's your job to look at that map, assess where you are best of pushing, and where you are best off holding. Hammer and anvil does work. I am not without gripes though. There are bugs called Scorpions which are quite frankly annoying. They outrange you, despite having guns, high powered sniper rifles or better and they 'cheese' your long distance weapons, often staying just outside of your range, as if they could judge such a thing reliably. To get around this, improving the officer or allowing the construction of a fleet relay to call in air support, would be nice. Theme and flavour is perfect. The propaganda-based menus take you right back to the feel of the movie. The tutorial is even the ill-fated drop of Klendathu and as things start to quickly unravel, the media do their best to put a positive spin on it until they see the drop ships abandon you and quite frankly, cut the feed, leaving your brave lads and lasses to a defiant, heroic and grizzly end. The territorial game mode they've added allows for a lot of replayability. The inclusion of the powered suit troopers and mechs as your 'end game' tech, mentioned in the book, are just the cherry on top. You're laugh like a space fascist as your literal space marines fire rockets from their shoulders and actually out-run the arachnids, shredding them all with high powered weaponry - but the game will make you earn these toys.
