Hello, No one will see this review, but it isn't for you. This review is for my younger self and every person who experienced this. At one time, this was the best game to ever exist. I will buy this game one day, I will bring back its former glory. I will make Starmade the best game to ever exist once more. Mason

(NOTE: I am in no way affiliated with the game's developers or anyone else mentioned in this guide in any official capacity) My first Steam review...so please forgive me if it seems clunky. StarMade is an open-world sandbox in the style of games such as Minecraft, which allows players to travel the stars in their own custom-made ships, as well as build space stations on both planets and in space itself. I supported the game back in the day, and I still find it has a very low bar of entry for players. If you know Minecraft, this game is similar, with some differences in controls, but you can still navigate it very easily. As of the time of me writing this (2-25-2025), the game is currently in a zombie-like, quasi-dead state, and according to second-hand rumors this was due to problems within the company. The developers, however, still have a love for this game and though it seems like the game is barely operational, community developers have stepped up with the official support of the main devs, and small updates occasionally come to those of us here on Steam while the devs work out how they can return to this game. So while this game is mainly a side-project now for all involved, it is far from dead. The problems, as of the time of writing, include clunky tutorials and difficult-to-understand systems, guides are definitely recommended for new players (I can personally recommend some here on Steam from an individual named Lecic). While this may scare some from the game, I can still fully recommend it even though it is still in Alpha. Simply put, though some of the systems can be complex, guides and trial-and-error can ease this barrier, and this game has a very low bar of entry for new players compared to other games in the same genre. I was able to understand most of the systems back in the day fairly easily, and to my experience that's still true. If you don't want to get into the nitty-gritty of optimizations for your systems you can still just build a ship and fly around, being wary of pirates. It's an excellent game despite the flaws, and although updates tend to be slow in coming, they ARE still coming. Now is a great time to try StarMade for free, and if you enjoy it, consider buying to support the devs so they can return to the game and give it the love that it needs.

StarMade Review Overview: StarMade, a voxel-based sandbox game, has the potential to be the "Minecraft of Science Fiction." However, it seems the community has let the developer down by not providing constructive feedback and often disagreeing with the developer's direction. Gameplay and Mechanics: StarMade has faced issues with balance. While not game-breaking, the contradictions in its mechanics have held the game back from its true potential. It appears that the creator might have been ready to move on to a second iteration but lost interest after the community's backlash to the rebalanced game mechanics. Survival Mode: Before the rebalance, Survival mode felt more like a semi-creative mode. It was easy to reach end-game status within a few hours, reducing the need for resource harvesting and crafting. The rebalance aimed to address this by limiting the ability to obtain infinite resources and currency without significant gameplay. Community Feedback: The remapping of controls after the rebalance posed a challenge for long-term players, who struggled with muscle memory. This sudden change made the game feel unplayable for some, contributing to the community's frustration. Current State: Despite these issues, StarMade remains a recommended game, especially since it's still available for free. The developer distributed it for free for over five years before marketing it on Steam, where it unfortunately lost momentum. Conclusion: StarMade is a fun and challenging game worth revisiting. Even after owning it for years for free, the enjoyment it offers is worth the purchase. If you have some free time, it's definitely worth giving StarMade another shot.
