Another legendary game in a legendary series. This entry bridges the gap between the old and the new. The gunplay is still most akin to the original Dark Forces with intuitive auto aim. The combat is fast and furious with a real sense of speed to it. The levels are now built in true 3D and improve upon that abstract design where navigating through them is an immersive puzzle. DFII introduces lightsabers and force powers to the FPS formula and these spice up the moment to moment gameplay. Running and gunning while simultaneously shooting lightning at your enemies is a great feeling This game has problems, however. If you play this game in it's original form, it's nauseating and downright unpleasant. There's a long drawn out explanation of what's happening in the engine, but I'm just going to give you the gist. Whenever you turn your camera, the game is only displaying 40FPS To counter this problem, use the program OpenJKDF2. This reimplementation of the game allows for full framerates. There is still judder due to the physics running at a different refresh rate than your monitor, but you can fix this by going into Options/Display/Advanced and checking "Restore Inconsistent Physics" This is the definitive way to play the game OpenJKDF2 https://github.com/shinyquagsire23/OpenJKDF2

How To Play Firstly, reviews are mixed because Lucas Arts released these games in an unacceptable state, they don't work on a lot of PCs. SO... Use the OpenJKDF2 source port to run these games, easy drag and drop install, they run flawlessly using OpenGL with updated graphical additions like SSAO and Widescreen and many other fixes. find it here https://github.com/shinyquagsire23/OpenJKDF2 Review Classic Post Trilogy Story As I said with Jedi Knight, this pair of games is my favorite in the Dark Forces series, but also possibly my favorite Star Wars games in general. With the disappointing Disney Trilogy, I think a lot of classic SW fans will find a lot to love about this series. As someone who has no real interest in reading the extended universe books, the Dark Forces series is an awesome window into the original story line, post original trilogy. We get to see the state of the galaxy, Dark Jedi, Imperial Remnant, the new Republic and Jedi Orders, etc. Expansion Done Right Mysteries of the Sith is a fantastic addition to the original game, being roughly the same length, and featuring an interesting story starring Kyle Katarn and Mara Jade. It is not just some throw away expansion, it has a ton of new weapons, all new assets and levels, new force powers, and a story that bridges the gap between JK 1 and JK 2 Jedi Outcast. Don't skip it, if you enjoyed Jedi Knight, MOTS is 100% a must play. Mysteries of the Sith is basically a whole new game built in the same engine, similar to what Lucas Arts later did with Jedi Academy being built on Jedi Outcast's engine. I would go so far as to say that MOTS is superior, it has more intricate level designs, more interesting locations to visit, and more story and characters to interact with. JK is more about facing down the Dark Jedi and fighting Imperial Remnant, classic Star Wars fare. MOTS, while it does start out that way, quickly evolves into a really fun smuggler style story line. There is certainly more variety here and I really can't overstate how much of a step up the locations you visit are from those in the base game. MOTS, at the time, had some of the best level design in the entire FPS genre, and by today's standards it's still impressive. it's kinda the peak of that intricate exploratory FPS level design that began with DOOM but fell out of popularity once an entire FPS campaign could be one seamless experience, like Half-Life. Cons The one thing MOTS does lack is the FMV cutscenes that are so much fun in Jedi Knight. In it's place we just have traditional 3D model cutscenes, but they are still very well done. When you see how the story progresses, it would have been much more ambitious and expensive to film this expansions cutscenes in live action than it was for Jedi Knight. ' Mysteries of the Sith ' is to ' Jedi Knight ' as ' DOOM 2 ' is to ' DOOM '. Mods There is also a remaster project available for both games, personally I think the game looks better with the original models and unfiltered pixel textures, but to some people it would be considered an improvement. These games do also benefit greatly from a few reshade filters: bloom, raytracing, ambient light, godrays, etc, just to spice up the lighting really.

This expansion pack is okay; the story is good. The gameplay is the same as the main game, only that you dont have a dark side or light side option. Overall if you are a Star Wars fan, then you'll find enjoyment in this. Just do yourself a favor and download mods! https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3249676137

I have a ton of mixed feelings about Mysteries of the Sith. On the positive side, this "expansion pack" (which is really a standalone game) brings a lot of well loved Legends characters, particularly Kyle Katarn and Mara Jade, both of who are playable. The game has a lot of references to other Legends and Dark Forces / JK lore if you are paying attention. This game also feels in many ways more ambitious than JK2, with more friendly NPCs, improved multiplayer, a variety of level sets, new weapons, and more. People have mixed feelings on the voice acting, but I like it. Maybe that's nostalgia talking though. On the negative, MotS fall prey to the worst parts of DF2 Jedi Knight, which are amplified greatly. Particularly, the level design is often very convoluted. It can be tricky figuring out where to go and you may spend 10 minutes to find that the way forward is to break through a vent hidden in some corner behind something. It almost feels like the need to search often is intentional to artificially draw out the length of the game. Some of the levels are interesting and others are kind of dull, in my opinion. The narrative also is kind of mixed, with some things not ending up being explained and the pacing is sometimes uneven. While not surprising but still a bit disappointing, MotS doesn't have the live action cut-scenes that Jedi Knight does. Granted JK is unique in the series when it comes to that. The reviews of this game is mixed, and I feel like that's really understandable. Some things are excellent and unique to MotS. The events of MotS move Mara forward in the Legends universe and is hugely consequential for Kyle's story. However the level design may irritate a lot of people, and the game does feel dated. Depending on how much you feel positively or negatively MotS is worth checking out if you are a fan of the Dark Forces / Jedi Knight series or a fan of Star Wars Legends. Many people may be put off by the dated graphics, gameplay, and level design. I would play Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight first. If you like that, then give MotS a try. At only a few dollars this game is pretty cheap though, so you aren't out much if you don't end up caring for it. Regarding playtime - I've had this game as well as Dark Forces and Jedi Knight since they were originally released and put many hours into these games. I may even still have the original CDs around somewhere.
