Dark Forces is a time capsule for a very specific period in gaming history. It existed in first wave of "DOOM clones", the games that made small iterative updates to DOOM's formula before major engine developments (eg. Build, id Tech 2) pushed the capabilities forward. Whereas DOOM feels somewhat timeless, these games feel extremely 1995. Of all the mid-'90s first person shooters, Dark Forces was near the top of the list of games who desperately needed a remaster. Unlike many of its contemporaries, Dark Forces lacked a high quality modern source port until very recently (The Force Engine). The development of both TFE and this remaster have helped put the game back on the "boomer shooter" map. Dark Forces shines with its Star Wars styling, which was especially impressive in 1995 compared to DOOM's abstract theming. Wall textures and sound effects recall the films vividly. Blasters have just enough weapon spread inaccuracy to get that authentic shots-bouncing-off-walls action from the movies, without making them so inaccurate as to be frustrating to use. Puzzles are where Dark Forces separates itself the most from DOOM, requiring the manipulation of everything from elevator positioning to multi-state door switches to open pathways that are not at all obvious at first glance. Not every design decision holds up in retrospect, with the heavy use of obnoxious proximity mines in a couple levels being the obvious worst offender (made all the more frustrating by the poor mechanics of throwables, which are the best tool for clearing mines). At no point does the game benefit from these time-wasting damage tax mechanics. Dark Forces is at its best when either blasting Empire fodder with reckless abandon, or noodling through a puzzle that's tricky but not frustratingly arcane. This remaster, in usual Nightdive fashion, does an excellent job of touching up the game *just* enough for modern play, without fundamentally altering the core experience. Being able to press F2 to toggle between the modern 4K hardware-accelerated renderer and the original 320x200 software rendering is a welcome touch and belongs in every remaster of this sort. The remaster also contains redone art assets, which help the 4K presentation and offer something you can't get in The Force Engine source port (though TFE now offers the ability to use assets from the remaster if you own it). Dark Forces received a ton of praise and acclaim in 1995, at a time when both first-person shooters and Star Wars games were fresh and novel. In retrospect, it does not quite hold up as well as the early FPS genre classics that bracketed it in time. Still, it is an essential experience for connoisseurs of early FPS games, and this remaster is an obvious purchase, whether you play it directly or use its assets in The Force Engine.

When I was a kid I was too scared of the monsters in the sewer to progress beyond the third level, but now, thanks to Nightdive and the passage of time, I am a big boy who can finally finish the game.

This remastered version is pretty much identical to the original, only it looks much better because of graphics/video improvements. Since I thought the original was a pretty darned good game, I enjoyed this as well. The list price on Steam, $29.99 when last I looked, seemed kind of steep for only visual upgrades, so I would say wait for a sale like I did.

Star Wars: Dark Forces Remaster is a nicely crafted upgrade for a classic Star Wars FPS, which makes it playable on modern systems right out of the box, without needing DOSBOX and the like. The story follows Kyle Katarn, a mercenary working for the Rebel Alliance in their fight against the Empire. As Kyle, you're tasked with uncovering the secrets behind the Empire's newest secret project, the Dark Troopers. This mission will take you across several different planets, and you might even end up seeing a few familiar faces along the way. Of course, being an FPS from the 90s, the story is told only through a handful of cutscenes between levels, and mission briefings. Even then, it's pretty good (although no longer canon to the main Star Wars continuity, since Rogue One overwrites some events from this game). Gameplay wise, it hasn't changed from the original. As I said earlier, it's a FPS, so you'll spend most of your time shooting. There's a nice variety of weapons, some packing quite a nasty punch: from a regular blaster pistol, to a mortar launcher and even a missile launcher. Enemy variety is good for a game from this era, as you'll be facing Stormtroopers, Imperial Officers, a handful of alien species, and the Dark Troopers. And there's also some puzzle solving and key collecting, as it was common for games from the 90s. Graphically, the improvement is noticeable. It still looks like a game from the 90s, mind you, but in higher definition, so it's not all pixelated. And the remastered cutscenes look very nice. The audio seems to have been upgraded as well, and there's the addition of subtitles; at least I don't remember the original having them, so that's a plus. Overall, I enjoyed this game. I did realize how little I remembered from the original, despite having played it only 6 years ago. I basically didn't remember anything from the second half of hte game, besides the final boss. Anyway, I recommend it.

Probably too expensive for a game from 1995 that can be beaten in about 5 hours, but the remastering is really well done, the game plays great. Absolutely recommend to all fans of the original, and I think most Star Wars fans with a steam account would enjoy it.
