I would seriously recommend playing this version of the game, using "The Force Engine" port, over the Remaster. Remaster is fine for what it is I suppose, but 40$ for an arguably worse looking experience to what has already been available for years first in the XL engine and now even better in The Force Engine is kinda lame. The game looks way better with the original pixelart textures and cutscenes, the Remaster just kinda has that uncanny meh look to it for me.

You'll occasionally see this game mentioned in the same breath as Doom, and while that's fair in the sense that Doom was the obvious inspiration at Lucasarts to make the game in the first place, it's really a lot more than that. Dark Forces made many advances in first person games that were novel for the time, like having rooms above rooms, being able to look up and down; generally levels with a lot more verticality. Additionally Dark Forces put a lot of time and effort into making those levels feel more like what they were meant to be depicting, and less abstract that a lot of other FPS games from the time. It's definitely a game to play if you like 2.5D FPS games or if you're a Star Wars fan.

Lots of people say this is just DOOM with a Star Wars skin, but I don't think that's really fair. For a start, this was built on a different engine from DOOM that allowed you to look up and down, which was not possible in DOOM. Believe me, this was a significant leap forward in 1995! If you play this, remember you're playing a game from the mid 1990's, where level design was often obtuse and confusing. There's lots of looking for keys and backtracking to progress, which can be frustrating for the modern player. Can't wait for the Nightdive remaster, which is coming soon!

It's not bad, I guess, especially for back in the day. I haven't played it back then though, but it's fun to play Doom with a Star Wars skin. The classic Star Wars music sounds cute. Puzzles were terrible, had to check on walkthroughs. Go for it if you're a fan of Star Wars, Doom, old games. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3075929042

Before you guys want to purchase and play this game PLEASE download the Force Engine Mod! It made the game so much better. I saw it on a Winter Sale and picked it up for $2 and decided to play it, because I haven't played it since PS1 and Win98 PC. It's literally Star Wars on a nice Boomer Shooter, plays like Doom, runs like Doom~ I would highly recommend playing it with the Mod I just mentioned. Runs very very nicely and Dox Box makes it run like a horrible pixelated mess. Btw this does work on Steam Deck, you just have to fiddle around with the controls. And yes I am aware about the remaster coming up, but I just wanna play this game so bad.
