If nothing else, this is the best board to digital game I have ever played. The soundtrack and sound design is impactful and charming. The animations are also tantalizing to look at. This is an awesome deck building/area control game which rewards you the more you play. The spirits( a total of 24 and I have only played 6) are all wonderfully diverse with their own play styles. It's hard to pick an absolute favorite but if I had to choose a tie then it would be between Shadows and Thunder Bearer. I've never played the board game before this digital adaptation and the last time I tried one (Small World), it was completely underwhelming. This is exactly what every board to digital conversion needs to be. Awesome work by the dev team!

Imagine if the very best, most engaging, creative, interesting decision-making in a 4x game like Civ was every single turn of every game. Imagine if we're in our 30's and don't necessarily have 3 hours to spend on a given day. In 30min-1 hr, you will experience here some of the greatest game design I have ever come across. Multiple systems interlock in original, meaningful ways that allow both thematic immersion (you're an elemental spirit fighting colonial invaders? Crack open a pedialyte, son. ) and different types of strategic thinking. You've got an engine building aspect within the power card system, a predictive and timing element in the different phases, resource management, and strategic positioning to engage with. Oh, did I mention that every spirit plays completely differently? I bought this game expecting few-evening-long dalliance, a trifle, an amuse bouche for my friend and I to play once or twice, but what I found was - much like a 19th-century Bourgeois society courtesan - instead an endless vacuum of time, fascination, money (you bet your ass I bought the physical board game), tears, and a constantly renewing hunger. Let me pay a call, I say to myself, at 8 AM. Let me pay a call...

A Yes/No recommendation system doesn't really fit for this game. First, Spirit Island is a great board game. You can read plenty of reviews on BGG to understand if it's a great board game for you. However, the app experience varies heavily depending on if you play solo to multiplayer. If you are playing solo, then this version has two big advantages over TTS: completely automating rules, and a compact and friendly UI (instead of having to constantly pan the TTS camera around). Games are a lot faster than solo with the TTS version (and much, much faster than physical) and it's easier to make informed strategic decisions and play by the rules correctly. The main downside is that not all content is released yet, namely even if you buy all DLC some spirits will be missing. Assuming you already own TTS, it's up to you if the advantages make up for the price point and limited spirit selection. Multiplayer is a completely different experience - the board game experience really doesn't translate well for a lot of reasons. E.g. the inability to easily undo a misclick, the fact that you have to vote on decisions like what order to resolve invader actions/fear cards in which are completely inconsequential most of the time, especially at lower difficulties, having to wait for other players actions which might interfere with yours but are unlikely to, etc. This isn't to mention some of the issues with undos causing desyncs (a recent update claims to have improved this, but some friends and I tried and had a desync issue on our very first undo...). I'm giving a positive review from the perspective of someone who wants the most streamlined solo experience, which will avoid a lot of the multiplayer issues. But for playing with friends, I will only play multiplayer on TTS unless they make some major changes.

Fantastic adaptation of an excellent board game. The developers have been very precise in their implementation of the rules, and the graphics, UI, and music are all great.

I love Spirit Island. I have the boardgame. For the longest time I was hesitating getting this - why duplicate when I have the boardgame, right? But, the ease of play - the sounds and music - and no setup time - have won me over. It will never replace the original boardgame experience, - but playing at nightime for example, as a solo on my pc - soooo much easier and I can get through more games this way. Also, it is a bit of a teaching aid at times - if an event or card left you feeling dubious - the digital edition seems to resolve most of those issues for you. VERY COOL APP!! Absolutely worth getting for Fans of the boardgame.
